NZ CANOE POLO UPDATE
MAY
2009

Secondary School Champs Hotly Contested
Awesome polo was seen at the 2009 New Zealand Canoe
Polo Secondary School Championships held at the Rotorua
Aquatic Centre 3-5 April. Chanting and loud support
could be heard all weekend from spectators watching
games on both the indoor and outdoor pools, with spectacularly
warm fine weather accompanying every day’s
competition.
Many games were tight and close. A high level of canoe
polo was displayed by the school age players with very
vocal support from parents and spectators. The supporters
from Karamu High School and Horowhenua college had
their own noise competition during the junior finals. The
score was one all with Karamu winning the Junior Girls
final and Horowhenua winning the Junior Boys final.
The senior division one finals were highlight games
drawing the spectators to the main stand turning it into a
packed out wash of yelling and cheering. The senior girls
in the division one final served up a fantastic spectators
game with patient attack and valiant defence. An early first
goal by Taradale put pressure on Karamu to score, but
with Taradale focussing on retaining possession Karamu
only managed to equalise just before half time. Taradale
continued to dominate possession in the second half but
had several attempts at goal blocked. Both teams scored
another goal each. When Taradale scored the winning goal
they continued to dominate possession, and blocked the
few attempts at goal by Karamu. One minute to go Karamu
were working hard around the goal, but it was too little too
late and at the sound of the full time whistle Taradale were
the new NZ Canoe Polo Secondary School division one
girls champions.
The senior open division one
final came down to the wire
The senior open division one final came down to the wire.
With Havelock North up 2-1 at half time, both teams looked
controlled and only willing to take the best shot options. At
full time the score was three all, so the game moved into
golden goal time. While Otaki could have been considered
the underdogs with four girls accompanying four boys to
make up the team, it was some definite girl power which
helped Otaki win the game. In the dieing minutes of extra
time Paris Pidduck, with great composure, managed
to shrug off a rough tussle under the water with one of
the Havelock North players to help Otaki win the game.
Havelock North was fouled and Otaki were awarded a goal
penalty shot. As the shot was taken it bounced off the
goal frame! All the players were there but an Otaki player
got there first and popped the ball in the goal to retain the
Senior Open Division 1 title for Otaki College.
Palmy Becomes Australia’s Second Best State
The Palmerston North Vikings Black team set out upon its
mission to dominate world canoe polo, starting with Australia.
Our goal, nothing less than first, and to gain some valuable
training and experiences for our 2009 National League
campaign. The competition, Australia’s version of New
Zealand’s inter-regionals in Sydney. The road to success
had some bumps and bruises, especially losing to Jimmy’s
team 4-3 in our very first game, gave us some real painful
bruises. But from then on, our team solidified as a tight
unit, winning the majority of our games to make the final.
The final was played against South Australia 1, in which the
majority of the Australian National team plays. Both teams
took it seriously, and it was a exciting and challenging
final. But there had to be a winner, and due to some strong
Australian defence and a few dodgy calls, we lost the final
2-1. Our supporters were horrified but we were happy that
Palmerston North, a “city” of around 70,000 people, is the
second best state in Australia.
AUSTRALIAN INTER-STATES

Art Deco
The weekend of the 21st and 22nd of February saw teams
from Auckland, Tauranga, Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North
and Wellington converge on the beautiful Hawkes Bay to
compete in the annual Art Deco tournament.
The weather put on a show in true Hawkes Bay style being
fine with lots of sun.
Palmerston North had a strong weekend with the Valkyries
claiming the Women’s A grade title from hometown favourites
the Hurrikets while the Vikings put on a show yet again,
winning the Mens A grade for the last ten years.
The weekend was extremely successful with some great
games being played and watched.
Atahua Cup
Palmerston North put on a stunning weekend for the annual
Atahua Cup. The tournament was again held on the Palmerston
North Centennial Lagoon but for the first time, with the
aid of a bore, there was a nice high level of water.
Palmerston North presented a strong united force winning
three of the four categories. The Vikings carried on its
winning form from the South Island champs winning the
Open A grade, while the Valkyries started the season in
style taking out the Women’s A grade. Otaki took top honours
in the Open B grade, with the Valkyries B team winning
the Women’s B grade.
