Both of the Crusaders’losses last week were in Indianapolis, as Valpo fell to IUPUI and Butler.Top Performers: IUPUI - Dent/Dooms 15 kills each; Dooms 22 digs; Root 29digs; Vanden Berg 10 kills; Pokorny 46 assists, 11 digs, 3 aces; Hauch 13 digs, 3acesButler - Britton 14 kills; Beil 10 kills; Pokorny 37 assists, 17 digs; Hauch/Root 20digs each; Dooms 14 digsWright State - Beil 10 kills, .500; Hauch 7 kills, .583, 15 digs; Vanden Berg 7 kills,.412; Pokorny 29 assists, 16 digs; Root 17 digs; Cudney 12 digs, 5 acesFollowing the Crusaders: Both of this weekend’s league matches can be seenlive online for free on the Horizon League Network. Links to the live video, aswell as live stats for both matches, will be available at www.valpoathletics.com.Head Coach Carin Avery: In her tenth season at the helm of the Crusadervolleyball program, Carin Avery has experienced nothing but success at headcoach. Avery is 238-92 (.721) in her nine-plus years at Valpo and owns a 293-116(.716) record overall in 11-plus years as a head coach. She ranks among the top-20 winningest active coaches in Division I volleyball by winning percentageand is Valpo’s all-time leader in both wins and winning percentage.Series Notes: Youngstown State - 17-6 overall (7-2 under Avery); last meeting 3-0 Valpo @ Valpo 10/9/11 [Dent/Dooms 7 kills each; Pokorny 29 assists; Root 18digs; Vanden Berg 7 blocks]Cleveland State - 15-10 overall (4-8 under Avery); last meeting 3-2 CSU @ Valpo10/8/11 [Britton 16 kills; Pokorny 39 assists, 19 digs; Root 27 digs; Dooms 19digs; Beil 6 blocks]Nine Straight 20-Win Seasons: With at least five regular season matches remaining, plus any contests as part of the Horizon League Championship andany possible postseason match, the Crusaders have a great shot at continuingthe program’s tremendous streak of success. Valpo won 27 matches in 2010,extending to nine straight seasons its streak of posting at least 20 wins. Valparaisohas won 20 or more matches every year since 2002, Avery’s first at the helm ofthe Crusader program. Valpo is one of just 12 programs nationwide to have wonat least 20 matches in each of the last nine years.

The Crusaders, who received one first-place vote, were deadlocked with Butler, both just one point behind Cleveland State. Milwaukeewas tabbed as the league’s preseason favorite.A Rare Losing Streak: With their pair of losses in Indianapolis to open lastweek’s action, Valparaiso found itself in the rare position of having lost threestraight matches going back to the home defeat against Green Bay. The last timethe Crusaders dropped three straight contests was back in 2008, when they lostfour straight matches from Sept. 13-27, including three Horizon League showdowns.Snapping It in a Big Way: But the Crusaders then came out like a house afireagainst Wright State on Saturday to snap the losing streak. Valpo didn’t evenhave to make one full rotation against the Raiders in the opening set, downingWSU by a 25-4 count in the first frame. In fact, after being tied at 2-all, theCrusaders ended the set on a 23-2 run and actually started the second set withfour straight points as well. The four points allowed is the fewest allowed by aValpo team since the move to rally scoring.Sweeps Still Going Their Way: While the Crusaders suffered through threestraight losses, none of the defeats came in three sets, as Valpo has continuedits run of success in sweeps. Since Sept. 14, when the Crusaders swept UIC atthe ARC to open Horizon League play, 10 of Valpo’s 17 matches have ended injust three sets, with the Crusaders going 9-1 in such contests. In fact, seven ofValpo’s eight Horizon League wins have come in sweeps, with only a four-setwin over Butler on Oct. 1 serving as the outlier.Spreading the Kills: The Crusaders have featured a balanced offense all seasonlong, with a number of players sharing the attacking load. Sarah Dooms ispacing Valpo this season with 226 total kills, the fewest kills by any of the nineteam leaders in the Horizon League. Despite this, Valpo still boasts the highestcumulative kill total (1,309) among the nine league schools. Morgan Beil hastallied 221 total kills, while two other Crusaders have at least 175 kills apiece. 13matches into the Horizon League slate, only Beil (117) has picked up more than100 kills in league action.Players of the Week: Junior Taylor Root tied a Horizon League record last weekwith her seventh career weekly Defensive Player of the Week honor. Root, whoset a new career high with 38 digs against Green Bay, now has earned a pair ofweekly awards this year, also earning the honor in the season’s first week.Root’s seven career league weekly accolades tie her with Beth Greulich (CSU)and Kerri Schuh (UWM) for the most in league history. Freshman Morgan Beilhas also been honored by the Horizon League this season, picking up OffensivePlayer of the Week honors on Sept. 19.Horizon League Standings(through matches of Nov. 3)Team Horizon OverallMilwaukee 14-0 21-4Cleveland State 9-3 16-7Butler 9-5 13-13Valparaiso 8-5 17-11UIC 7-6 14-11Green Bay 6-7 10-15Wright State 3-10 4-22Loyola 1-11 4-18Youngstown State 1-11 3-22Around the Horizon LeagueFriday, Nov. 4*Valparaiso at Youngstown State, 6 p.m.*UIC at Cleveland State, 6 p.m.*Wright State at Loyola, 7 p.m.Saturday, Nov. 5*Wright State at Green Bay, 2 p.m.*Valparaiso at Cleveland State, 3 p.m.*UIC at Youngstown State, 3 p.m.*Butler at Loyola, 4 p.m.Tuesday, Nov. 8Valparaiso at Chicago State, 7 p.m.Friday, Nov. 11*Green Bay at Youngstown State, 6 p.m.*Loyola at Cleveland State, 6 p.m.*Butler at Wright State, 6 p.m.*Milwaukee at Valparaiso, 7 p.m.Saturday, Nov. 12*Loyola at Youngstown State, 1 p.m.*Green Bay at Cleveland State, 3 p.m.*Milwaukee at UIC, 6 p.m.(all times Central)* - Horizon League matchServing Up Aces: The Crusaders totaled 18 aces over 11 sets in their threematches last week, with a number of different players stepping up and having
