Reimagining the 

The primary goal of the Museum’s ambitious expansion 

project is to allow more works of art from our worldclass 

collection to be brought on view in the galleries. 

The additional gallery space provided by the new 

David Chipperfield–designed East Building will afford 

our curators a unique opportunity—the chance to 

reimagine the presentation of the Museum’s collection. 

A visible sign of the Campaign’s success and our 

donor’s generosity is the progress already being 

made on reinstallations taking place throughout 

the Main Building. 

Already, visitors to the Museum will find European art 

from 1700 to 1945 newly featured in the galleries east of 

Sculpture Hall. Over the next several months, a series of 

Timeline For Expansion 

reinstallations is scheduled, which will bring back on 

view many favorites from the collection as well as works 

of art which have never before been displayed. 

The new installation of the 18th-century art includes 

works by such well-known artists as Canaletto, Chardin, 

Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Tiepolo. The installation 

features works relating to “The Grand Tour,” visits to 

Italy taken by northern Europeans who sought to learn 

about the Italian Renaissance and its roots in the ancient 

world, as well as the art of the court in the 18th-century, 

including portraits of the nobility and canvases that 

appealed to their refined tastes. Objects that speak to 

common domestic practices claim a gallery of their own, 

while a final gallery is devoted to religious art.

of the Saint Louis Art Museum’s galleries, already underway.

Embracing the importance of emotion and subjective feeling, the Romantics 

flourished in the early part of the 19th-century as a daring reaction against 

the belief in rational thought that had dominated Western culture since the 

Renaissance. Gallery 205 captures this major artistic movement’s fascination 

with the Orient, particularly the exotic cultures of North Africa and the Near 

East, and highlights Romanticism’s international range with richly colorful 

works from England, France, and Germany. 

The Realist movement emerged in mid-19th-century France as artists 

moved away from works focused on ancient history and biblical and 

mythological scenes. The reinstallation in Gallery 206 provides an 

opportunity to explore these artists’ efforts to affirm the importance of 

observation of contemporary reality. 

German artist Max Beckmann’s work is complex and multifaceted, straddling 

a wide range of genres and spanning a tumultuous historical period that 

included two World Wars. Given a new place of prominence in Grigg Gallery 

(G216), the reinstallation of Beckmann’s works showcases the breadth of the 

Museum’s unparalleled collection of his paintings. The largest of its kind, 

the Museum’s holdings cover all periods of Beckmann’s career and is based 


largely on the 1983 bequest of Morton May, chairman of May Department 

Stores, who built the largest collection of Beckmann’s paintings in the world. 

The Museum’s collection of Impressionist art has been installed thematically. 

Impressionist Portraiture (G217) presents a range of works from Renoir, 

Degas, Manet, and Fantin-Latour. Many portraits created by these artists 

were noncommissioned, private works, and thus are distinguished by an 

informality and intimacy. The Impressionists are especially well-known for 

their works of rich light and color, and the Impressionist Landscape gallery 

(G218) includes paintings by Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, van Gogh, and Gauguin 

that demonstrate the artists’ innovative depiction of the modern era, which 

transformed society with industrialization and the arrival of the railroad in 

the mid-19th-century. 

In the Museum’s more than 100-year history, generous donors have given 

stunning art collections as well as endowment funds established specifically 

for art acquisition. As a result, the Museum’s collection places it among the 

very best institutions of its kind. We look to the continued leadership and 

generosity of the next generation of collectors and donors as we envision 

the Museum’s exciting future together. 

The Level 2 galleries to the east of Sculpture Hall now 

feature European Art from 1700 to 1945. Galleries 202, 

203, and 204 feature 18th-century European art, and 

Grigg Gallery now showcases artwork by Max Beckmann.

Both Gil and Marty Bickel grew up in 

St. Louis and have been coming to 

the Museum since their childhood. 

“My first visit to the Saint Louis 

Art Museum was with my fourth 

grade class,” remembers Gil fondly. 

Marty’s first significant memory of 

the Museum was her visit to the 

exhibition of Claude Monet’s Water 

Lilies triptych in 1980. “I remember 

waiting in a very long line and when 

I finally got to see the Water Lilies, I 

was in awe,” she says. “As a docent, 

I spend a lot of time visiting our 

central panel, and I am still thrilled 

each time I present it to visitors.” 

Marty is delighted that the three 

panels of Monet’s Water Lilies 

triptych are being reunited again this 

fall. Marty is one of the lucky few 

Museum patrons who will have the 

opportunity to see the three panels 

reunited as Monet intended, not 

once, but twice in her lifetime. 

Dr. and Mrs. Larry Shapiro are respected 

scientists who met while conducting 

genetic research at the University of 

Hawaii. Dr. Larry Shapiro is the Dean 

of Washington University’s School of 

Medicine, and Carol Uetake-Shapiro has 

recently joined the board of The Nature 

Conservancy, a leading international 

conservation organization. When they’re 

not bettering the planet through science, 

the Shapiros enjoy collecting Japanese 

artwork. They are also Members of the 

Museum’s Beaux Arts Council, and 

Carol has served a number of years 

on the Friends Board. 

“My introduction to the Museum began 

with a call from former Friends Board 

President Peggy Ritter shortly upon my 

arrival in St. Louis,” remembers Carol. 

“She said that there was no better way 

to meet the St. Louis community and 

become acquainted with the Museum’s 

extensive collection than to join the 

Friends Board. And it really has been a 

rewarding and fun experience.” 


Gil and Marty Bickel are longtime 

BAC Members at the Benefactor 

Level and have committed a 

generous gift to the Museum’s 

capital campaign. Marty is also the 

Friends Board President and has 

been a docent since 2004. 

“I was drawn to the Museum’s 

docent program because of my 

background in teaching and my 

love of art,” Marty explains. “Being 

a docent is wonderful. I am always 

learning new things, and I get to 

meet and interact with so many 

interesting people.” 

As a docent, Marty understands 

firsthand the need for the Museum’s 

expansion. “The Museum’s expansion 

is vital to our future because we 

have such a significant collection of 

postwar art that needs to be displayed 

in a building appropriate for the 21st 

century,” she says. 

Around the same time, Carol met Steven 

Owyoung, former curator of Asian art, 

and became a volunteer in the Asian 

art department at the Museum. “The 

Museum has a very impressive collection 

of Japanese screens,” Carol says of the 

Museum’s holdings. “I am also very fond 

of our growing collection of contemporary 

Japanese ceramics and tea utensils. I 

hope that—with the addition of the new 

building—there will also be added space 

for our notable Asian collection.” 

The Shapiros have proven their 

commitment to the future of the 

Museum with a generous gift to 

The Campaign for the Saint Louis Art 

Museum. “It is up to those that care 

about the Museum to ensure that it 

remains a valuable resource for all by 

helping to secure the needed capital,” 

says Carol. “The new building will be a 

wonderful addition. We have such an 

extensive collection that it is not possible 

for all of even our best works to be 

adequately displayed.”

necessity of giving back 

to the community. “After 

you have taken care of 

your family’s needs, it is 

vitally important to share 

what you have learned with 

others,” he says. “The Art Museum 

is a perfect place to do that in 

St. Louis. Giving time and money 

is a great opportunity to pass on 

the Museum’s gifts to other 

community members.”

the Museum’s collection. “In order 

for future generations to share the 

Museum’s benefits, we need to 

constantly improve the physical 

plant and build new facilities to 

display our fabulous collection,” says 

Gil. “The Museum’s expansion will 

allow the public to view more of this 

great collection of art in a worldclass

The Young Friends of the Saint Louis 

Art Museum is a group of young 

Members committed to supporting 

the Museum and learning about art 

in the community. All proceeds raised 

by the Young Friends benefit the 

Young Friends Art Purchase Fund, an 

endowment that assists in purchasing 

art for the Museum’s collection. Since 

the group’s founding in 1994, six works 

have been purchased through this 

fund—each selected with input from 

Young Friends Members themselves. 

Last year, the Young Friends Steering 

Committee began discussing the 

Museum’s capital campaign and how 

best to invite Young Friends to support 

it. The committee felt that the Young 

Friends should be asked to support the 

campaign in a personal and special 

way, just as the group’s art purchase

Last October, the Young Friends set 

an ambitious goal of $250,000 for 

the Young Friends Capital Campaign. 

As of September, the group has 

raised more than $210,000 through 

expansion tours, a volunteer phonea-thon, 

and one-on-one visits with 

potential donors. 

Key to their success has been the 

Young Friends’ immense support from 

the group’s seven past presidents— 

each of whom has made a generous 

campaign pledge, setting a tremendous 

example and serving as a testament 

to the lifelong relationship that many 

Young Friends have with the Museum.

Program since 2010 and recently 

committed a generous gift to The 

Campaign for the Saint Louis Art 

Museum. “With 22 hotels in St. Louis 

and it being our hometown, we are 

committed to helping St. Louis grow as 

an ideal destination for both business 

and leisure travel.” 

Providing further incentive for Drury 

Hotels’ support of the Museum’s 

expansion is the company’s 

commitment to environmentally 

friendly design. A Drury Inn & Suites 

that recently opened in Flagstaff, 

Arizona received silver certification 

from the US Green Building 

Council’s Leadership in Energy and 

Environmental Design program 

(LEED). Likewise, the David 

Chipperfield–designed East Building 

was designed in accordance with 

LEED certification standards, and the 

Young Friends 

Carol Ann Jones, a past 

president still very involved 

at the Museum, not only 

made an early pledge to the 

campaign, but also began 

fundraising for it. “I think about 

the original building being constructed 

for the World’s Fair and the legacy 

so many people left behind for us,” 

she says. “Taking part in the new 

wing is our chance to do the same 

for future generations.” 

Past President Michelle Cohen’s 

love for the City of St. Louis is what 

compelled her to give. “For St. Louis 

to be a world-class city that attracts 

and retains young people, we must 

have a world-class art museum,” she 

explains. “The expanded Museum 

will offer more for all of us to see 

and experience.”

strategic acquisitions 

made by the Museum 

and magnificent gifts from local 

benefactors have created a collection 

that places the Museum among the 

top 10 comprehensive art museums 

in the country. “The Saint Louis Art 

Museum is a world-class institution 

that has provided education and 

culture to the City of St. Louis for 

more than a century,” says Mr. Drury.

and further promote the arts provide

over 18 years, Family Sundays has been 

engaging families with the finest art in the 

Museum’s galleries, offering families of 

all backgrounds an opportunity to interact 

with the arts and with each other – at no 

cost. Family Sundays programs are offered 

every Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in 

Sculpture Hall.
