<strong>2012</strong> <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>Volleyball</strong><strong>Central</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> <strong>University</strong><strong>2012</strong> <strong>Volleyball</strong> <strong>Record</strong> <strong>Book</strong>Preseason NotesDefending MAC Tournament Champions<strong>Central</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> won its first Mid-AmericanConference Tournament championship inprogram history last season as the No. 6 seedto qualify for its first ever NCAA Tournament.The Chippewas defeated No. 1 NorthernIllinois in five sets to end a 31-year droughtfor the Maroon and Gold.Wild, Wild WestThe West Division of the MAC has becomeone of the most competitive in the country.All four NCAA Tournament qualifiers heraldedfrom the MAC West in 2011 and five of thesix teams finished ranked inside the final top100 in RPI. All but one team in the MAC Westfinished with a winning record in 2011, whileOhio was the only team from the East to finishabove .500.MAC Breaks Postseason <strong>Record</strong>Northern Illinois, Ball State and Western<strong>Michigan</strong> joined CMU in the 2011 NCAATournament, giving the MAC a new record formost teams to qualify for postseason play. TheBobcats of Ohio had been the conference’slone representative the previous two seasons.Strength in NumbersThe Chippewas return five of their six startersfrom its 2011 championship squad, as well asits primary libero junior Jenna Coates. Overall,CMU returns seven letter winners, 80 percentof its points scored and kills.All-“Mac”Sophomore outside hitter Kaitlyn McIntyrereturns for her second season in the Maroonand Gold after earning Freshman All-MAChonors as a rookie and leading the Chippewaswith 409 kills. Known by her teammates as“Mac,” her 409 kills set a CMU freshman singleseasonrecord and ranked sixth all-time sincethe NCAA implemented rally scoring in 2000.To the MaxAfter becoming one of the best floor captainsin the conference a year ago, junior setterKelly Maxwell will look to build upon earningMAC All-Tournament team honors. Maxwell’s1,314 assists ranked second in the MAC andwere the fourth most in CMU single-seasonhistory, while she also finished fourth in theconference with 10.95 assists per set. Shecurrently ranks fifth on CMU’s rally scoringrecord list with 1,381 assists, just 296 behindCatherine Ludwig’s (2008-11) 1,677 and 721behind Stephanie Budde’s (2006-09) 2,102.In the MiddleDespite losing four-time All-MAC selectionKaitlyn Shultz to graduation, the Chippewaslook to be just as strong in the middle. JuniorDanielle Gotham returns after leading theteam with 116 blocks and finishing fourthon the squad with 246 kills. Senior JocelynVervelde, sophomore Hallie Enderle and truefreshman Kalle Mulford will join Gothamin the middle as they look to improve onfinishing fourth in blocks in the MAC as ateam in 2011.Diggin’ DeepJunior Jenna Coates will look to continueher defensive prowess in <strong>2012</strong> after finishingfifth in the MAC with 543 digs and 4.24digs per set. The mark was the third mostin CMU single-season rally scoring historyand brought her career total to 788, rankingher seventh all time. Senior libero SamanthaBrawley also returns for the Chippewas’defense after she finished with 1.98 digs perset as a junior.Fresh FacesThe Maroon and Gold will welcome fourfreshmen to the program in <strong>2012</strong>, as liberoKristen Reenders, setter Jordan Timmer,middle blocker Angelique White and middleblockers Kalle Mulford will join the 11 returnChippewas.Lindsey’s LegacyOutside Hitter Lindsey Dulude has a chanceto cement her name in the record booksduring her final campaign. Dulude enters theseason ranked fifth in service aces per set(0.26), sixth in digs per set (2.16), seventh inkills (737) and attacks (2,283), ninth in serviceaces (82) and tenth in total digs (686).Second Generation ChippewasDulude and Danielle Gotham make up a pairof second-generation CMU volleyball playersas their mothers represented the Maroon andGold under head coach Marcy Weston threedecades ago. Terri Phillion-Dulude and DeniseBreslin-Gotham were both All-MAC first teamhonorees as seniors in 1982.Olson Receives New ContractHead Coach Erik Olson was rewarded witha new five-year contract in the offseason,replacing his old contract to keep him atthe helm of the Chippewas through the2016 season. During his tenure, Olson hasmentored a MAC Player of the Year, 14all-conference selections and three MACAll-Freshman Team selections. He was alsonamed the 2008 MAC Coach of the Year.CMU Earns Sixth-Straight AVCA AcademicAwardAfter finishing the 2011-12 academic yearwith a 3.481 grade point average, CMU wasamong the 102 NCAA Division I programsto receive the American <strong>Volleyball</strong> CoachesAssociation Academic Team Award.
