CATHOLIC YOUTH
FOUNDATION USA
2011 Annual Report

Page 2
Dear Friends—Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
It is our joy to share with you this 2011 Catholic Youth Foundation USA Annual Report.
Called to Glory was the theme for the 2011 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in
Indianapolis (November 17-19, 2011).
In many ways, the Foundation heard that call to glory in 2011. For the first time ever, the
Foundation provided $101,050.00 in scholarships to 520 young people and those who serve
them. These funds helped young people attend the NCYC. Specifically, the Foundation:
• Sent $10,000.00 to Bishop James V. Johnston (Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau) for
the young people who suffered the early spring floods and the May tornado that ripped
through Joplin, Missouri. In all, 15 percent of the scholarships went to help victims of
natural disasters.
• Provided forty percent of the scholarships to youth from Hispanic parishes.
• Supported youth suffering economic hardships (20 percent).
• Assisted individuals with medical conditions or physical disabilities (4 percent).
These three days are life changing experiences—for youth and adult alike. So many young
people feel alone and “odd” as they learn their faith. It is hard to feel alone and odd when
you are one of 23,000. And our adult youth leaders begin to see what is possible for their
own youth ministry.
Twenty diocesan directors for youth ministry attended the New Diocesan Directors
Institute in May 2011. The Foundation has a long history of helping underwrite the cost of
this vital program. All costs associated with the institute are covered. The only cost to the
new diocesan director—and his or her diocese—is time and travel expenses.
Our grant making promotes youth ministry and youth leadership development. We notice
a growing interest in the new evangelization. Not only are our young people learning about
their faith—they are learning how to share it with others. We awarded $22,662.50 in grants
to eight innovative programs.
It is our benefactors that make all of this possible—bishops and grandparents, diocesan
directors and youth ministers, godparents and the youth themselves, priests and parents.
We continue to hear the call to glory. There is so much to do in the areas of adolescent
catechesis, evangelization, sports, and the emerging adults. Through a growing national
network of supporters, we can build a faithful future for the young and emerging church.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Mission Statement
Catholic Youth Foundation
USA serves the National
Federation for Catholic
Youth Ministry by
providing financial
resources at the local,
diocesan, regional, and
national levels to promote
effective and innovative
youth ministry to assure a
faithful future.
Our goals include:
• Supporting the National
Federation for Catholic
Youth Ministry in their
ministry to young people.
• Providing scholarships for
young people to attend
the National Catholic
Youth Conference and for
adult leaders to attend the
National Conference on
Catholic Youth Ministry.
• Awarding grants for youth
ministry projects.
• Aiding in the development
of youth ministry programs
for culturally diverse
communities.
• Providing outreach to youth
in crisis.
• Training youth ministers.
This was a historic year for CYFUSA. Through the generosity of our
benefactors—many of them from the young church gathered at the 2009 NCYC
in Kansas City—we were able to provide $101,050 in scholarships for our young
people to come to 2011 NCYC in Indianapolis.
CYFUSA received $385,800 in scholarship requests.
2011 NCYC Scholarships—By the Numbers 520 Total
Youth from Hispanic Parishes 208 (40%)
Youth from Parishes New to NCYC 109 (21%)
Youth Suffering Natural Disasters 78 (15%)
Youth with Special Health or Physical Needs 21 (4%)
Dioceses Served through Scholarships 50
One request we were able to respond to came from Our Lady of Consolation
Parish in Wayne, New Jersey. A number of families suffered considerable
damage to their homes from Hurricane Irene. The youth group responded
and helped with the clean-up. Fundraising for the NCYC fell to the bottom of
the list. CYFUSA was able to help three youth most in need—Donald, James,
and Christian.
Our Lady of Consolation Parish Youth Group cleans up after Hurricane Irene.

2011 Scholarships
We were also blessed with
another challenge grant for 2011.
The young church responded
to the CYFUSA’s Put5Aside
Campaign by giving $106,000 at
the closing liturgy. The challenge
grant—$100,000—will be used
to “develop and promote young
adult ministries.” CYFUSA provided $7,500 in
scholarships for members to attend the January
2011 Membership Meeting in Albuquerque,
New Mexico.
CYFUSA provides scholarships to youth and to
those who serve them. These scholarships are
distributed on a biennial basis. During the
“odd” years, scholarships are given to the youth.
During the “even” years scholarships are given
to adults to attend the National Conference on
Catholic Youth Ministry. Some of our scholarship
recipients for the National Catholic Youth
Conference are the adult chaperones who must
accompany the youth. Scholarships are available to
diocesan youth ministry leaders every year to assist
them in attending the NFCYM’s annual meeting of
the membership.
2011 NCYC
Your generosity will make a difference in the lives of the youth as
they embrace a deeper relationship with Christ.
New Diocesan Directors Institute
CYFUSA has a long history of support for the New
Diocesan Directors Institute held each May in Washington,
D.C. NFCYM designed the four-day institute to provide
formation, leadership development, best practices and
important connections to national Catholic organizations
for the diocesan youth ministry leaders. This comprehensive
formation is designed to support and enhance the
professional development of diocesan leaders and at very
little cost to local dioceses; the registration, program,
meal and housing costs that total approximately $400 per
person is covered by grants including a major one from the
Catholic Youth Foundation USA. Participants simply have
to cover their transportation to and from the D.C. area.
The Institute helps the new diocesan leaders explore the vital
role they possess in implementing a comprehensive vision
for youth ministry. They learn the leadership skills that are
required to collaboratively work with other diocesan and
national offices, as well as local pastors, religious education
and youth ministry leaders. Sessions range in topic from
certification standards, use of technology and social media,
to networking and planning and coordinating large events,
all within an atmosphere of prayer and community that
serves to focus and inspire the new diocesan leaders.
The challenge I face is starting a program from the
ground up. I want a collaborative office with the pastors,
parishes, coordinators of youth ministry, and laity.
NDDI gave me great places and resources to springboard
to meet that challenge. It was a very useful, practical, and
helpful.
Rarely does a day go by that I don’t reference something
we discussed at NDDI. The resources and contacts I
made at the conference have proven to be invaluable to
me in my work in the diocese.

Grant Recipients
In January 2011, the CYFUSA Board of Directors
awarded $22,662.50 in grants to the following
recipients:
Our Lady of Loreto Ridgeview Ministry
Archdiocese of Denver
The Our Lady of Loreto Ridgeview Ministry
provides Catholic youth ministry to young men,
age 14-18, currently incarcerated at the Ridgeview
facility in Watkins, Colorado. Both Catholic
and non-Catholics attend services on a weekly
basis including eucharistic services, fellowship,
question and answer sessions, catechesis, penance
services, and prayer groups. The purpose of the
ministry is threefold: to draw these young men
into participation in the Catholic faith community,
to foster their personal and spiritual growth, and
ultimately, to empower them to live as disciples of
Jesus Christ.
As a direct result of the grant from Catholic Youth
Foundation USA and the additional donation of
Bibles from Saint Mary’s
Press, the Our Lady of
Loreto Youth Ministry was
able to provide outreach,
education, support, and
catechesis to hundreds of
young men. Our ministry
was able to offer a Bible and
a copy of the Catechism of
the Catholic Church to each
young man who attended
services. For most of these
young men, it was the first
Bible they ever personally
owned. The young men
were surprised and touched to be able to take their
Bibles with them, and often returned with questions
after doing some reading on their own. The
Catechisms were also very useful to help answer
questions regarding the faith both during our visits
and after we have left the facility.
House of Peace—Hope Is Something You Do
Archdiocese of Milwaukee
“Hope Is Something You Do” is a workshop for
middle school students presented twice a year
by trained high school students on the skills
and concepts of nonviolent conflict resolution.
The training of the high school students is a
collaborative ministry between the House of Peace
and the Leadership Center of Cardinal Stritch
University. The issue of violence is not new to the
city of Milwaukee—often called one of the most
segregated cities in the country. The House of Peace
is an outreach center that has addressed the needs
of the poor in Milwaukee’s inner city since 1968.
Sean Lansing, the program director, shared one
of their success stories—Fernando. Fernando is a
young man who just recently graduated (May 2010.)
He was in the House of Peace Teen Leader Program
for all four years
of high school and
was one of our lead
workshop presenters
for our Hope Is
Something You Do
Workshop. He is the
first in his family to go
to college, and we are
excited to say that he
just finished his first
semester at Harvard
University! He credits
his involvement
as a House of Peace teen leader as critical to his
success, both because of how the program helped
his application stand out, but also the skills and
confidence it gave him to reach his full potential.
The Partnership in Adolescent Catechesis—
Transforming Adolescent Catechesis
Archdiocese of Washington
Last year the Partnership for Adolescent Catechesis
received a grant to purchase software to enable
interactive, online learning for those participating
in Transforming Adolescent Catechesis (TAC). TAC
is an eight-month process that works with parishes
and schools to evaluate and transform how they
think about and engage in adolescent catechesis.
It is critical that those facilitating the process—the
local teams and coaches—are formed in their
understanding of change management, adolescents,
catechesis, and other topics. To ensure that TAC
Page 7

is both cost and time effective, this formation will
now occur in an online environment, allowing
participants to access the learning sessions at their
own convenience. Without the financial assistance
of CYFUSA, this important component would not
be possible. Currently Transforming Adolescent
Catechesis is in the pilot phase. It will be available
nationally in the summer of 2012.
New Evangelization Week
Diocese of Portland Maine
The New Evangelization Week was held July
10-14, 2011 at St. Joseph College with 49 youth
participants and 11 team members. The fiveday
program for high school youth consists of
presentations on theology, Christian living, prayer,
apologetics, and leadership skills. The program
included daily Mass, eucharistic adoration, men’s
and women’s sessions, and time for personal prayer.
Participants left with an enthusiasm for their faith
and a reminder to live out their baptismal call in
their families, schools, parishes, and community.
Many have done so through a commitment to serve
on the Diocesan Catholic Youth Leadership Team.
Mike Lavigne commented on the life-changing
impact the week has had on some young people and
their families: “One of our gals had such a powerful
experience of prayer during adoration that she got
her parents to start going back to church.” The grant
from CYFUSA significantly reduced the registration
fee making it more affordable.
Page 8
Leadership Intensive Training Project
Diocese of Beaumont
Due to personnel changes, the Leadership Intensive
Training Project needed to be delayed several
months. It is now scheduled for February 2012.
Diocesan leadership expects up to 100 teens will
attend. The program will be presented by the
Center for Ministry Development. The focus of the
program will be on leadership skill development
through hands-on activities, simulated experiences,
small group work, and presentations.
St. Jude Catholic Church’s Youth Leadership
and Social Justice Project
Diocese of Las Cruces
This program is designed to revitalize youth
ministry in the parish through service-related
programs in the parish, neighborhood, and city.
Through the use of service opportunities, with adult
mentors, the youth will be engaged in doing service
for others while they grow in their faith and form a
community of peers.
This past Christmas, young people learned the true
spirit of Christmas from a little girl. As part of the
outreach dinner offered during Christmas, they had
“door prizes” as gifts for the participants. One little
girl was chosen first and she selected the largest gift
there—which happened to be a race car track. The
youth offered to exchange the gift for something she
wanted more. “No,” she said, “My brothers will like
this.” There were plenty of gifts so the youth group
offered to let her choose one more thing. She chose
something for her Mom.
2011 NCYC
I watched my
rather shy
daughter get
up in front
of the entire
congregation on
Saturday night
and teach them
the chant, “God
Diocesan Youth Leadership Camp
Diocese of Memphis
Thirty-Eight (38) youth from sixteen (16) parishes
attend the Leadership Camp 2011 in the Diocese
of Memphis. During the three-day event, the youth
focused on the call of baptism, communication
skills, group dynamics, decisionmaking, Mass
and the new liturgical norms, listening skills, and
defending the faith. These thirty-eight youth were
commissioned as TIMs (Teens in Ministry) at the
conclusion of the campus and became leaders in
their own parish. Thirty-One were able to serve at
the annual Fall Youth Gathering. They also helped
lead the first diocesan teen reconciliation service in
December 2011.
TEC Core Team and Spiritual Director Webinar
Training
Archdiocese of St. Louis
Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) is a powerful retreat
experience for young people. Teens witness their faith
to each other and come together
for days of prayer and reflection.
At the heart of the retreat, is
the witness talk both by teens
and adults. These talks call for
thoughtful preparation. Through
a series of eight (8) webinars,
Ron Reiter
the TEC Core Team can provide
training and support to teens and
adults as they prepare their witness
talks. These webinars improve the support available
to teens and adults as well as expand this type of
support to some of the rural parishes.
“This has really helped our ministry,” said
Ron Reiter, executive director for TEC.
“We can reach out to so many people
this way. We have learned how we can
upload the presentations to YouTube
making them even more accessible to the
TEC Community.”
2011 NCYC
I came hoping
to become a
better Catholic
and connect
better with my
faith. I got more
than I expected.
The best part
about NCYC
was the family
atmosphere,
knowing that
everyone shared
the same beliefs
as you. You didn’t
feel weird for
talking about
faith.
2011 NCYC
I have to tell
you, a teen in
our group felt so
strongly about
her faith she did
something that
really made me
proud of her.
She normally
doesn’t go
to church on
Sundays because
she lives with her
dad who does
not go to church.
She proceeded
to convince her
dad to take her
to church on
Sunday, and then
with her faith
and convincing,
she got him to
go with her.
Wow! Thanks
for making it
all possible.
I think it is
hard for adults
to imagine it
happening,
but the young
people rose and
gave a standing
ovation. Isn’t
that amazing?
Bishop Zarama
talking about
Mary and 23,000
kids give him a
standing ovation.
I know it was the
young people
in our section
who jumped to
their feet when
he finished; the
adults followed
them. He spoke
humbly and
powerfully
from his own
experience, and
they loved it.
Dear Friends of the Young Church,
In 2012 The National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry (NFCYM) is celebrating our thirtieth
year of “serving those who serve the young Catholic Church.” We are proud of this achievement in
ministry with, for, by and to young people and we are grateful for the thousands of adults whose
commitment to our young people and whose love for the church makes this possible.
NFCYM is supported in this mission by the Catholic Youth Foundation USA (CYFUSA), which
provides financial resources to enhance youth ministry throughout the church. Our ability to offer
professional development for youth ministry leaders and quality programs and services for the young
church is enriched by the support of CYFUSA. The Foundation works to mobilize the Catholic faith
community into a community of faith on behalf of the young church. We are grateful.
When 23,000 youth and adults gathered for the 2011 National Catholic youth Conference, over 500
participants were there due to the scholarship assistance provided by CYFUSA. Together with the
financial grants provided to creative youth ministry projects at the local, diocesan, and national level,
CYFUSA enables the important work of youth ministry to continue.
As NFCYM begins its next decade, I am keenly aware of the challenges before us. Through the
Partnership on Adolescent Catechesis, we are hoping to “turn the tide” of religious literacy and practice
among our young people. We need to strengthen our Catholic families. We believe the best way to
do that is by building a healthier and holier relationship between parents and children. Our Strong
Catholic Families initiative serves that end. The sports programs our young people are in are a missed
opportunity for character formation. We want to change that through National CYO Sports.
There are massive challenges facing us as we serve the young church in a society that, at times, is
hostile to the faith or, worse, simply dismisses faith as irrelevant. These challenges will require a heroic
response. The CYFUSA is a national network of heroes making it possible for us to respond.
The Board of Directors and their new president, Dr. Donald McCrabb, have been excellent stewards of
the CYFUSA’s generosity and its commitment to our pastoral ministry with young people. This support
is vital to the future of youth ministry in our country. Along with the NFCYM board members, I offer
my deep appreciation for the ongoing support provided by the Catholic Youth Foundation USA.
May the Lord continue to deeply bless CYFUSA, your wonderful donors, and all those committed to
the young Catholic Church.
Sincerely,
Robert J. McCarty, D.Min.
Executive Director
The CYFUSA Story
Page 16
Youth ministry emerged
through CYO beginning
in 1930. Eventually
it became a national
movement organized
and supported by the
Catholic Bishops of the
United States of America
through the Catholic
Welfare Conference.
A Vision for Youth Ministry was
published by the Education
Department of the United
States Catholic Conference
(USCC) in 1976.
In 1980, the USCC decided
it could no longer organize
and support specialized
ministries such as religious
education, chaplaincy, and
youth ministry.
In 1982, the diocesan directors of youth ministry
formed the National Federation for Catholic Youth
Ministry (NFCYM) on January 20th at 11:17 am.
It held its first national conference—the National
Conference on Catholic Youth Ministry—in New
Orleans (November).
NFCYM created the Catholic Youth Foundation USA
(CYFUSA) in 1989 to provide “financial resources
at the local, diocesan, regional, and national levels
to promote effective and innovative ministry with
adolescents in order to assure a faithful future.”
World Youth Day was held in Denver,
in August 1993. That year, 7,000
attended the National Catholic Youth
Conference in Philadelphia.
Renewing the Vision: A Framework for
Catholic Youth Ministry was published by the
National Conference of Catholic Bishops in
1997.
On August 29, 2005,
Hurricane Katrina ripped
through the Gulf Coast.
CYFUSA responded by raising
over $80,000 to aid the young
church in the Gulf Coast
dioceses.
CYFUSA was given its first challenge grant for NCYC.
An anonymous donor would give up to $100,000 if
the young people matched that through the NCYC
collection. The 23,000 young people and their adult
chaperones in Kansas City raised $127,000.
In 2011, CYFUSA gave $101,050 in scholarships so 520 young
people could attend the 2011 NCYC. The young church responded
again to a $100,000 challenge grant. The 30,000 young people and
their adult chaperones gathered for the Feast of Christ the King in
Indianapolis, raised over $106,000.
