“I was a confused undergraduate starting my fourth major, and I stumbled
into a course in European history before the French Revolution taught
by Professor Dietrich Gerhard. It was a subject that I was not particularly
interested in, but Professor Gerhard was a wonderfully warm, grandfatherly
person whose class was outstanding. He made his subject exciting — his
lectures were an hour and a half, generally without notes, and he would talk
about people and events of 200 years earlier as though he knew the individuals
and had lived through the events. Plus, whenever he talked with you,
he made you feel as though you were the most important person around.
Dr. Gerhard was the first professor who gave me a love for history, and it was
due in large part to him that I pursued a major in history, a decision I have
