High Holiday Schedule
Babysitting for children ages 1-3 is
available on Rosh Hashanah (both days)
and Yom Kippur.
Please register and send your payment to the
Temple office by September 23.
The procedure for babysitting on the High Holidays
is as follows:
• Families need to pre-register each child through
the Temple office.
• A parent/grandparent will escort each child to the
babysitting room. The child will be checked-in
according to our pre-registration list.
• Each pre-registered child will be given a
color-coded bracelet; parents/grandparents will
receive an identical bracelet. Colors identify
service choice so that in the event of an emergency,
we can locate family members quickly.
• Each pre-registered child will receive a preprinted
nametag with his/her name/nickname and other
pertinent safety information.
• Children may only be picked up from babysitting
by a parent/grandparent with a matching bracelet.
Older siblings should not drop off or pick up
children from babysitting.
First Day of Rosh Hashanah, 9am-12:30pm ($15)
Second Day of Rosh Hashanah, 9am-noon ($15)
Yom Kippur, 9am-12:30pm ($15)
Payment and registration must be received in
advance so that we are able to adequately staff
our child care program. Only children that are
pre-registered and pre-paid will be admitted
into the babysitting program. Sorry, no
exceptions. Prices are per child.
Please complete a separate form for each child.
Copies of the registration form are located
in the Temple office or on our website
Rabbi’s Report by Rabbi James Rosen
What is the essence of the blowing of the Shofar? We naturally tend to focus on
the magnificence of the Baal Tekiah (the shofar blower) as he or she sounds the
notes. We wait breathlessly for the Tekiah Gedola, the long extended note. Will the
blower have enough breath to make it to the end?
But, the Shofar is really not an endurance test. It is a prayer embodied in
wordless, changing notes. “Tekiah,” the first blast, is in essence a single whole note.
It begins and closes every set of blasts. In the middle is the shattering “Shevarim,” three notes of
brokenness. Teruah, nine notes of an almost hesitant stuttering, come third. And again at the end,
Tekiah, wholeness.
If only life could always traverse the same course. With apologies to Shakespeare, this was the
summer of our discontent. At press time we are still coping with the aftermath of terror in Norway, a
bruising, fractious congressional battle over the economy, deep uncertainty about the future, and a
yo-yoing stock market: the feeling that uncertainty is the only certainty.
We are so interconnected for good and ill. Remember some years ago when a small blackout in
Ohio cascaded into darkness throughout New York City? Today a market hiccup in Greece or Italy
is felt around the world. What a rabbi first observed about the moral meaning of the telephone,
“what happens here can be heard over there,” has been magnified a thousand fold.
Along with the grandeur and power of the prayers invoking God’s magnificence and our
smallness, we also find a great sense of hope in the Days of Awe. We learn that we cannot change
many of the rhythms of the world. But we can become masters of ourselves, more in control, more
whole.
Repentance, change, and forgiveness are the themes and challenges of the season. When we take
stock; when we begin to repair the brokenness around us and within us; when we begin the long
arduous, but deeply fulfilling task of committing ourselves to growth as Jews and as human beings;
we can be invigorated with a remarkable feeling of putting destiny in our hands, of putting a
mission of repair of the world as a whole within our daily grasp.
That is what we are here for. We dare not despair at the gyrations, the brokenness that abounds
all around us. There is so much we can do and be with Jewish tradition infusing our daily lives with
meaning, sensitivity and direction. We can be the Shofar’s journey from the whole to the broken, but
always back to the Shaleim, the whole again.
May we be privileged to know that kind of year: here in our sacred and enveloping community,
in study, at prayer, in sweet moments of celebration, here in your Beth El, and wherever you find
yourselves in the year ahead. From my home to yours, a Good and Sweet New Year!
2
President's Report by Carolyn Mostel Weiser
The summer is winding to a close. It is hard to believe that the High Holidays
are almost here. As you know, we traditionally appeal to you, our members, for
financial support during this time. And why should this year be any different from
other years? In my summer letter to you, I announced the introduction of the
Jacob’s Ladder Campaign. Thank you to all who have already given, and I sincerely
hope that everyone will think seriously about supporting Beth El in this
way.
Yet that is not the only pledge card you will see this High Holiday season. On Rosh Hashanah, I
will ask every one of you to make a pledge of time as well. Why do we study? To live more fully as
Jews. Why do we care about being warm and welcoming? Because we want to connect to others as
humans. And that means that we must demonstrate that we care about others. In Pirkei Avot we
read, “The world stands upon three things - Torah, Tefilah, and Gemilut Chasadim.” Torah, prayer,
and loving deeds. And so I ask you to work towards a fourth congregational goal - to help us truly
form a community of caring. This new card will ask you to pledge to make a meal for the sick, to
drive someone to shul who is no longer able to do so, to pick up groceries for someone in need of
physical assistance, to attend a shiva minyan, and other mitzvot. We are not asking you to devote
hours a week to this project. We have roughly 950 members, imagine if even half of our members
volunteered to help just once during the year: over 450 people cooking meals for others, attending
minyan, running errands - all to help each other. Some of us will be in need, and some of us will be
able to help. There will be times when some of us fall into both categories during a single year. But
the beautiful thing about a true community is that we are there for each other. I cannot think of a
more positive way to begin the new year than with a commitment to help those in our community
who need us. L’shana tova. May you have a sweet new year.

Taste of Shabbat
On August 6, a luncheon sponsored by Taste of Shabbat, prepared by our own
Howard Meyerowitz, using vegetables grown in Jessie’s Community Garden, was enjoyed
by the congregation after Shabbat services. We are grateful to the Kostin family for creating
this garden in memory of their daughter Jessica, and to all the volunteers who tilled and
nurtured the garden. Much of the bounty of the garden is donated to the Jewish Family
Service Kosher Food Pantry. Donations to the Taste of Shabbat Fund, which fosters Beth
El’s growing Shabbat community, are very much appreciated.
KNITzvah Group
The Book of Numbers… well, sort of
The KNITzvah Group had another banner year. We often use the expression "a labor of
love." When it comes to this group of dedicated women, this expression is so very true.
We love what we are doing; we love the camaraderie of getting together monthly; (we
break for the summer); we love to kvell over what someone has created; we love to see
how the skills of the ladies have grown. The biggest love is that wonderful feeling we get
when we learn where the work of our hands has actually been delivered. This year we have
added the Charter Oak Cultural Center to the group of recipients of lap afghans, hats and
scarves. Please consider joining us in the fall. We will next meet on September 11, at
10:00 a.m., in the Library. Bring # 10 knitting needles and prepare to enjoy.
And now for our annual accounting, our version of the book of numbers. We have
delivered 374 lap afghans, 182 hats (from infant to adult), 29 pairs of mittens, 10 scarves,
2 infant sweaters, 3 shrugs, 2 pairs of booties and 1 shawl. Good work, KNITzvah ladies!
Education Director’s Report
by Rabbi Howard Rosenbaum
As we prepare for the opening of school, I hope that all
of our school families have had a safe and enjoyable
summer vacation. Our school orientation packet, including
the 2011-2012 calendar and important program information,
has been sent out to all registered school families. If you
have not yet received your packet, please check to see that
you have registered your children for the new school year.
Classes begin on September 6 and 7, for students in grades Aleph through Hai
(grades 3-7) and on September 11, for students in grades Nursery through
Mechina 2 (grade 2). September 11, will feature our annual “Back-to-School
Day” program for parents, an opportunity to attend classes with your children,
meet their teachers, and learn about their curriculum for the year. If you have
friends that are not yet affiliated with a synagogue, we hope that you will
encourage them to join our Beth El family.
Giving and performing tzedakah continue to be an important component of
our Religious School program. On the first Sunday of school, all grades will
participate in a special project called “Houses for Change”, designed to help
the homeless and others in need. Each student will decorate a house-shaped
collection box and classes will have age-appropriate discussions reflecting
their own gifts and the fact that not all children are as fortunate as they are.
Collection boxes will be brought home and we hope that families will put their
loose change into the boxes regularly. Three times during the school year,
November 20, February 12, and May 6, students will be asked to bring their
boxes into school and will have the opportunity to donate the change to three
area charities that serve the homeless and others in need. Classes will design
their own tikkun olam projects and we will continue to collect non-perishable
food for the JFS Kosher Food Pantry throughout the year. We hope that each
time you do your family’s food shopping you will purchase an additional item
for those in need. Families are also encouraged to volunteer their time through
the Charter Oak Project and the three Mini Mitzvah Days that will take place
throughout the year.
On Sunday mornings, September 18 and 25, there will be tailgate parties in
the parking lot outside the Religious School entrance. We hope that parents
will stick around and get to know other Beth El parents who are part of our
Religious School and day school communities. A new lounge area is being
created in the room at the bottom of the stairs, next to the school office. We
hope that parents will join us regularly for coffee and a chance to schmooze
with other parents while their children are in class.
Our monthly Sunday morning creative arts electives will continue this year
for students in grades Aleph through Daled. We are looking for parents and
congregants who have skills or talents in the creative arts and would be willing
to help out for one hour per month on a Sunday morning.
For those who attended camps during the summer of 2011, we hope that
you will bring your camp spirit to the Beth El Temple Religious School.
September 25, will be “Camp T-Shirt Day” and students are encouraged to
wear their favorite camp T-shirt and other camp regalia to Religious School.
Once again, Beth El was well represented at Camp Ramah in New England,
with 22 campers and more than 10 staff members. If your child has not yet
attended a Jewish overnight camp, we encourage you to learn about Camp
Ramah for your child. A representative of Ramah will visit Beth El during the
year and Rabbi Rosenbaum will be happy to refer you to a parent whose child
attends Ramah. It is never too early to begin thinking about next summer!
Shabbat programs, Junior Congregation for grades 3-6, and Shabbat
Experience for grades N-2, will meet on a monthly basis throughout the school
year, generally on the third Shabbat of the month. In Junior Congregation,
students have the opportunity to participate in the service by leading prayers
and reading from the Torah. To reserve a part, contact Rabbi Rosenbaum at
233-9891 or hrosenbaum@bethelwh.org.
Welcome back to Religious School! We can’t wait to see you!
Men’s Club News
I hope everyone had a good summer and is ready to
get back to the school year routine. In an effort to keep
the summer alive, the Men's Club and the Religious
School are sponsoring a Father-Child mini-golf event on
September 25 after Religious school .
The Men's Club had a very successful 2010-2011
year, culminating in receiving the Quality Men's Club
award from the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs for
the fourth consecutive year. No other men's club in this region has accomplished
that feat. So, now we begin the quest for a fifth consecutive award
with a Sunday morning breakfast program featuring author Jason Alster,
date to be announced. Watch for future events as the year will be packed
with outstanding programming and support for Temple activities.
Finally, for those of you who have already joined the Men's Club for the
coming year, thank you. We cannot do this without you. If you have not
joined yet, there is still time to become part of our group of dedicated
members. There will be many opportunities for volunteers and all we ask
for is a couple of hours a month.
more litter. Please consider using these cards for your holiday shopping needs. Purchasing the card gives you the benefit of an
easier time at checkout and gives Beth El the benefit of a small donation from each store.
T’Green Olam Committee
A first ever survey of trash in a waterway was conducted in California. 19% was
branded, and those brands included: McDonalds, Starbucks, Wendy's, Taco Bell and
Walgreens, all probably being blown there by the wind or traveling through storm drains
during rainfall.
Of the unbranded, a good percentage was due to paper napkins, 68% of the unbranded
was used for food or beverage packaging. Disposable cutlery was also an issue.
Tips:
• Dispose of your trash carefully and securely. Minimize the use of disposable cutlery.
Buy goods that use less packaging.
• A recent report of toxic cities by Forbes Magazine, tracking air quality, water quality
and superfund sites, reported Philadelphia the worst and Washington, D.C. the best.
Beth El member Steve Szafman's daughter, Julia, was among the students that
helped to clear out debris in the neglected Jewish cemetery. The students spent a
week to uncover graves left unattended since the end of the 1998-99 Kosovo war
and restored the writings on the tombstones, most of them dating from the late
19th century.
