You mayhave spent a year’s pay on awardrobe full of brand newclothes, but if your shoes, shades, handbag and jewellery scream lastseason, you’ll look pathetically passe.Caroline Baxter, fashion editor ofCosmopolitan magazine, says think big whenit comes to accessories this season. ‘‘Bags arebigger, jewellery is bigger, sunglasses are stillbig – and shoes are big on colour,’’ she says.‘‘The main thing to remember is to have funwith your accessories. This season they’remore colourful and playful than ever.’’The spring/summer catwalks sparkled withsilver shoes which could have sprung fromyour childhood dressing-up box. And thefootwear fashion editors rushed to squeezetheir perfectly pedicured tootsies into shoesby Gucci, peep-toed and tantalisingly high. The real thing costs £245 – but keep a closeeye on Nine West and Bertie for moreaffordable lookalikes.‘‘Metallic is the in colour for shoes,’’ saysBaxter. ‘‘But there are also a lot of brightcolours like fuchsia, cobalt blue and canaryyellow around.’’ Wear them if you dare. But ifrainbow shoes are too bright for the office gofor another fashionable option – round-toedshoes in black, red, white or highly-polishedantique brown which will make yourchiropodist dance with joy.The newest bags are big, which is music toa make-up lover’s ears as there’s no need todecant your perfume or leave your hairsprayat home. ‘‘Minimalist bags are over,’’ saysBaxter. ‘‘The new size is bigger than ahandbag but slightly smaller than a sportsbag, and perfect for carrying all your oddsand ends.’’Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors and Dolce andGabbana sent models down the catwalkstruggling under the weight of giant bohobags. But to keep them beautiful rather thanbulky, big bags come in little girl shades ofbubblegum pink, sugared almond lemon andthe purest white. But if you’re only going tobuy one handbag this season, make it MarcJacobs’ Eva bag. If you can make it to the topof the waiting list, you’ll be asked to fork out£640. But again, fevered demand hasencouraged high street stores to producesimilar versions. For the latest style in jewellery, look tothose Sex in the City girls for inspiration. When Carrie last wore fine Christian Diorjewellery, stocks flew out of the stores – eventhough prices started at £3,000. In the newseries, Carrie donned clip-on dangly earrings,a battered gold heart-shaped pendant andjingle-jangly charm bracelets. Rummagethrough the backstock of H Samuel anddepartment stores’ second-hand jewellerysection and you’re bound to come up trumps.Easier to find – or harder to miss – is theNative American-style jewellery, whichincludes oversized necklaces and large, colourful beads. But there’s no need to scourthe stores, just pop down to your latest craftshop. ‘‘As long as your necklace looks as ifyou made it yourself from big beads andsmall pieces of wood, you won’t look out ofplace,’’ explains Baxter. ‘‘It’s a veryhandmade, individual look.’’Shades are bigger than ever – literally. Thepair It Girls won’t be see without are giant,ski-goggle style wrap-arounds from Prada for£160. And just to prove that you’re as up-tothe-minuteas the next fashionista, wearthem tight around your head as GiseleBundchen did at the Prada show. ‘‘As long asthey’re sporty and big, they’re in,’’ concludesBaxter.Men’s accessories are big news too. DavidBeckham still clings to his bling-bling andRobbie Williams recently commissioned ahuge jewel-encrusted ring, so gangster chiclooks set to reign into summer. Fat ties arethe only thing that will have your colleaguesnodding in approval. Find them at Prada andPaul Smith, then practise your knottingskills. Many men have an aversion to brownshoes, but this season they’ll proveirresistible. Brown ankle boots and shoescarry an antique finish and reek of Britishgentleman style, much favoured by GuyRitchie. If your wallet is as fat as your new tie, andyou happen to be in London, treat yourself tosome hand-stitched shoes from CarolineGoodman’s new shop in Mayfair. Choose thecolour and style you’d like – then simplyhand over £800 and the bespoke shoes areyours.MAIN PICTURE: Denisevan Outen with bright, beaded necklace andbeltRIGHT: striped pumpfrom Pied a Terre,£110; white roundtoeand red buckledNine West shoes,£60, from Binns.
