He will read Parshat Re'eh and deliver a Dvar Torah related to the Parsha. Jonathan is entering the 8th grade at the Ramaz Middle School. JEREMY SCHWARTZ Mazal Tov to Anne and Samuel Schwartz on the forthcoming Bar Mitzvah of their son, Jeremy, which will take place on August 26 at Merkaz Shimshon in Jerusalem. He will read Parshat Shoftim and the Haftarah, and will deliver a Dvar Torah on the Parsha and Nachmanides’ essay “A Letter for the Ages.” Jeremy is entering the 8th grade at the Ramaz Middle School. ISAAC SHEINKOPF Mazal Tov to Dr. Debra and Henry Sheinkopf on the forthcoming Bar Mitzvah of their son, Isaac, which will take place on September 9 at the Fifth Avenue Synagogue. He will read Parshat Ki Tavo. Isaac is entering the 8th grade at the Ramaz Middle School. BNAI MITZVAH SPENCER PERL Mazal Tov to Gail and Berndt Perl on the forthcoming Bar Mitzvah of their son, Spencer, which will take place on August 19th at the Tel Aviv Hilton in Israel. He will read Parshat Re’eh. Spencer is entering the 8th grade in the Ramaz Middle School. MICHAEL STROMER Mazal Tov to Shoshana and Dr. Saul Stromer on the forthcoming Bar Mitzvah of their son, Michael, which will take place on August 26 at the Wyndham Meadowlands Hotel in New Jersey. He will read Parshat Shoftim. Michael is entering the 8th grade at the Ramaz Middle School. GABRIELA ATTIAS Mazal Tov to Eve and Sammy Attias on the forthcoming Bat Mitzvah of their daughter, Gabriela, which will take place on August 20th with the Bat Mitzvah girls of EMUNAH's Bet- Elazraki, a children's home in Netanya. Gabriela is entering the 8th grade at SAR. YAEL CHANA MAGID Mazal Tov to Sandy and Dr. Norman Magid on the forthcoming Bat Mitzvah of their daughter, Yael, which will take place on Sunday, September 3 in Potomac, Maryland. She will deliver a Dvar Torah on Parshat Ki Tetze. Yael is entering the 7th grade at the Ramaz Middle School. REBECCA SHAMS Mazal Tov to Alissa and Howard Shams on the forthcoming Bat Mitzvah of their daughter, Rebecca, which will take place on Sunday, September 17. In the morning, a Sefer Torah for use by the Ramaz Middle School’s Sephardic minyan will be dedicated in her honor at the Edmund J. Safra Synagogue. A party for her friends will be held later in the day at the Ramaz Upper School. She will deliver a Dvar Torah relating to the Mitzvah of writing a Sefer Torah. Becky is entering the 6th grade at the Ramaz Middle School. If you are making a Bar or Bat Mitzvah at KJ between September 2006 and June 2007, please contact Alice Smokler in the synagogue office at 212-774-5670 to reserve specific rooms for your services, celebratory meals/kiddushes, and other functions. We are booking synagogue programming, and do not want you to be closed-out from your preferred venues. If your child attends Ramaz and you are a member of KJ planning a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, Alice Smokler must be notified directly of your plans. Reserving a date with Ramaz does not imply that it is reserved at KJ.
KEHILATH JESHURUN BULLETIN Page 21 The Executive Director of the Congregation, Robert J. Leifert, died on Sunday, April 23. He had served our Congregation for 26 years as, in effect, Chief Executive Officer. Bob Leifert was born into KJ, raised in our community by his late parents, Lillian and Benjamin Leifert, and doted upon by his maternal grandparents who themselves first joined KJ in 1914. He was honored at our 132nd Annual Synagogue Meeting for a quarter century of service to the KJ community, during which time the membership grew from a little over 500 to significantly over 1,000 member households. Bob lived and breathed KJ. He always thought about us. He was always planning creative ideas and programs - Yom Hashoah, Tisha b’Av, Bikur Cholim, Chevra Kadisha, Lunch and Learn, special guest speakers, and new kinds of activities. KJ was absolutely his life, right up to the Yom Hashoah Commemoration on Monday night following his passing. He had been looking forward to attending in his wheelchair. REMEMBERING ROBERT J. LEIFERT A photograph of Robert J. Leifert, of blessed memory, that appeared in the October 12, 1979 issue of the KJ Bulletin, when Bob became KJ’s Executive Director. His greatest pride was his family. He and Jackie did everything together, raised two wonderful children - Aryeh, who just received his rabbinic ordination at Yeshiva Chovevei Torah a few weeks after his father’s passing, and Dina who was so incredibly devoted to her father and who, like her father, always thinks of others before herself. Jackie was his lifeline in addition to being his life’s companion. She made sure he kept going, kept smiling, and kept on hoping despite his debilitating illness. For both of them, their greatest joy was the birth of their first grandchild, Yonah. One of the last moments in Bob’s life was when he received a hug and kiss from Yonah. As his last act in a life of selflessness and concern for others, he and the family donated his liver which was transplanted into somebody else who is now living a normal life because of that donation. It was a somewhat similar donation of a kidney by Bob’s brother, Harvey, that gave Bob himself an additional 19 years of quality life. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jackie, Aryeh, Michal, Yonah, Dina and Harvey. May the memory of Bob Leifert’s extraordinary life give all of them comfort and inspiration. The Leifert family is very appreciative of our community's love and support, and they would like to compile a collection of stories, memories, and photos of Bob Leifert for the family, particularly for his grandchildren and other future generations. HANNAH AND JACQUES SCHWALBE MIKVAH OPENS AT 419 EAST 77TH STREET A beautiful new mikvah now exists on the Upper East Side for the first time in our community’s history. It was dedicated in June as part of the Upper East Side Chabad Center at 419 East 77th Street (between 1st and York Avenues, 212-359- 2020). The mikvah is tastefully designed and aesthetically appointed. It will make the mitzvah of mikvah attractive to the women of our community. Our congratulations and gratitude are extended to Rabbi Ben Tzion Krasnianski and his wife, Chani, for conceiving the idea and bringing it to fruition. We are deeply moved by the fact that the mikvah has been named in memory of Jacques and Hannah Schwalbe who were devoted to the mitzvah of mikvah and who spearheaded the building of a mikvah in Kew Gardens Hills. Their children, Peter and Robert & Janie Schwalbe, are responsible for the lead gift that made possible this extraordinary addition to our community. Arthur C. Silverman was a major force in bringing the project to fruition. George Rohr also played a leading role in galvanizing community support and providing the funds for this new facility which will greatly enhance the religious life of our community. Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun and its Sisterhood, as well as many of our members, have also played a generous role in realizing this dream. Our thanks and congratulations go to all who have been involved. The home of the new Mikvah on 77th Street.
