Scottish Charity Number SCO30332.’The <strong>Eco</strong>-Schools Programme has beenrevised to make it more appropriatefor secondary aged pupils and morerelevant to the secondary curriculum.The programme offers both a structureand an incentive for secondary <strong>schools</strong>developing ‘Sustainable Development<strong>Education</strong>’ programmes. This <strong>leaflet</strong>outlines three steps towards becominga successful ‘Green Flag’ secondary.


STEPESTABLISH THE SEVEN 1ELEMENTS OF THEECO-SCHOOLS PROGRAMMESee the <strong>Eco</strong>-Schools website www.eco<strong>schools</strong>scotland.org1 Establish an <strong>Eco</strong> CommitteeAs wide a representation fromS1 to S6 and supporting adults as possible.2 Conduct an Environmental ReviewThere are review sheets available for school,home and community - the ‘school’ review iscompulsory.3 Draw up an Action PlanYou only need to cover three topics for your 1stflag - but one MUST be litter prevention.4 Draw up an <strong>Eco</strong> Code (mission statement)A song, poem, rap, acrostic, list.5 Establish/develop links to the CurriculumA quick curricular audit can be quite revealingand is now compulsory.6 Undertake Monitoring and Evaluation ofprogressAre you succeeding, how do you know?7 Involve the Whole School and WiderCommunityRun or coordinatewhole-school eventsand communityevents.STEP2TAKE ACTION FOR SUSTAINABILITYUndertake a range of activities to support the UK’s FourPriorities for Sustainable Development and the ScottishGovernment’s ‘Greener Scotland’ strategic objective.1 Sustainable Consumption and ProductionTackling over consumption and the throwawaysociety.e.g. moving towards Zero Waste, recycling, wastemanagement/reduction, management of resources- fishing, forestry, farming, mineral extraction, waterresources, reducing food packaging and food waste.2 Climate Change and EnergyReducing emissions.e.g. transport, alternative energy, alternative fuels, effectsof climate change, energy conservation, reduction ofgreenhouse gas emissions.3 Natural <strong>Resource</strong> Protection and EnvironmentalEnhancementOur relationship with the natural world.e.g. biodiversity, species loss, school groundsenhancement, local beauty spots, internationalcampaigns, environmental volunteering.4 Sustainable CommunitiesLiving, vibrant and healthy communities needhealthy places.e.g. litter prevention, community volunteering,anti-sectarianism, anti-racism, health promotion,environmental justice, regeneration, ‘green jobs’, zerocarbon buildings, national identity within cultural diversity.PROVIDE EVIDENCETO SUPPORTACCREDITATIONAS AN ECO-SCHOOLSTEP3Working within the framework of theSeven Elements of <strong>Eco</strong>-Schools Scotland,secondary <strong>schools</strong> can offer evidence of theircommitment to Sustainable Development<strong>Education</strong> (and progress towards Green Flagstatus) through:1 A willingness to allow pupils toexplore a wide range of SustainableDevelopment topics relating to theScottish Government’s Greener Scotlandobjectives for sustainable development.2 Providing opportunities for young peopleto gain accreditation for their work in SDEand other voluntary activities.3 Offering pupils an insight into careers andfurther education opportunities withinthe ‘green jobs’ sectors of the Scottisheconomy.4 A detailed audit of the current curriculumhighlighting elements of SDE alreadydelivered in classrooms - especiallycross-departmental initiatives.www.eco<strong>schools</strong>scotland.org
