Our Era - Movies, Music, Radio & TV, 1950‟s and 1960‟s. 1969Woodstock FestivalThe Woodstock Music and Art Fair was a historic event held at Max Yasgur‘s 600 acre dairyfarm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969. Bethel (SullivanCounty) is 43 miles southwest of the town of Woodstock, New York, which is in adjoining UlsterCounty.To many, the festival exemplified the counterculture of the 1960s and the ―hippie era.‖ Thirty-twoof the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend. Althoughattempts have been made over the years to recreate the festival, the original event has proven to beunique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in music history and waslisted on Rolling Stone‘s 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll .The event was captured in a successful 1970 movie, Woodstock, and Joni Mitchell‘s song―Woodstock‖, which memorialized the event and became a major hit for Crosby, Stills, Nash &Young.EDITORIAL: I am sorry to burst anyone‟s bubble on hard rock music,drugs, the free life style, etc. etc. etc. I think “Woodstock” is one of the largestembarrassments to this country and its people that there is. Why we as a countrycelebrate this “Festival” each year is beyond me. We should bury its memoriesand everything about it and what it stands for. That‟s all I‟m going to sayabout this subject.Al Ring
