I remember all of the good times that you and I had togethergrowing up together-- and the many times that your mother gave us cookies, along with cold milk in those colorful metaltumblers that used to contain cottage cheese during the '40s. (Are we really that old?)I remember the times we went boating on the Ohio River with you and your family and the times we went swimming at theLouisville Boat Club. (I almost drowned one time when I was diving for the drain, but I never told anyone-- until now.)I still have that framed picture of us, sitting on the backyard picket fence, with plaid shirts and jeans, and typical smiles onour faces.Almost every day, before we were old enough to go to first grade, you would come up and ride with me on the runningboard of our car. We never told your mother, but I'll bet she knew. And then there was the time my Dad grabbed us both by the seat of our pants to rescue us both from the Louden's horse, which charged us after we threw rocks at him. (We never told your mother or father, but I'll bet someone else did.)I remember the Play Tree across from your house, where we and the rest of the neighborhood kids used to play. Your houseand mine are still there, but the Play Tree is not. (I checked, when I was last in Louisville. But then, it was older than we,and hardly expected to outlive us.)Many nice memories from the past, of you and me-- and our mothers and growing upWith you in spirit and through these words at this time of passages.Ron Hammerle

Johnson's husband,Byron. 2002For those of you who may have met Byron Johnson at last year‘s Reunion, I wanted to let you know of hissudden death on Thursday, Oct. 19th at home. He was 55. He had jogged that morning, sat down to watch thenews and died quite suddenly. We‘re having a memorial service next week, followed by a military funeral at Arlington National Cemetery inthe near future. Byron was retired Air Force, Lt. Col.We certainly enjoyed the Reunion and he felt right at home with all my old high school friends.Abby (Gail) JohnsonAbby, I am so sorry to learn of Byron‘s death. I enjoyed meeting him last year. What a tragedy for you and your family.Obviously, there is nothing any of us in Louisville or other far-flung places can do to help you, but please know that we allwould if we could. My memories of you as a child (and weren‘t we all just children then?) have always been fond and fun.He will always be included in those now. As we learn about more such untimely events, we all face our mortality with adifferent perspective than we might have a few years ago. Thank God for the time we do have to be with our families, spouses and friends. Cherish them while we can; cherish the memories later.Steve PorterAbby,I have started this reply to your message several times since this morning when I first read it. I am saddened and shockedby the news of Byron‘s sudden and untimely death, and my heart goes out to you and to your family. As your classmate, I want you to know I appreciate that you were able to share this sad news with so many of us who rememberyou so well and fondly, and who met and liked Byron. I hope that you were comforted by doing this and by thewellspring of responses you have received and will receive. As Steve Porter says, there aren‘t many tangible things most ofus can do for you from so far away, but we can tell you we are sorry, and we promise you that we will keep you in ourthoughts and prayers this week and in the weeks and months that follow.I particularly regret that I did not talk to Byron longer at the Reunion about the places we had each been in the Air Force. You and I will have to have that conversation sometime at a future reunion. Please take care of yourself.Love, Gordon Finley10-31-2002 Gail -I have just returned from ten days in Kentucky and picked up my e-mails!! Steve Porter hit a nerve as well when he said we were all facing the face to face encounterwith our mortality. I have had to deal with both sudden death and lingering illness and death by decline.
