Welcome
Our academic, educational, research, and
outreach activities described in this 2006-2007
report are abundant and exceptional. These
accomplishments are reflections of the high quality
faculty, students, researchers, staff and alumni of the
College. Our PharmD programs in the College are
vibrant and strong. We have 460 PharmD students
enrolled in the entry-level program, and 86 students
are enrolled in our nontraditional PharmD (NTPD)
program. The College’s programming for
undergraduate students has never been stronger in
the BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences program, with
479 students enrolled as majors in Autumn Quarter
2006. Our graduate programs in the College of
Pharmacy continue the tradition of excellence, with
97 students enrolled in the areas of medicinal
Dean Robert W. Brueggemeier
chemistry and pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics,
pharmacology, and pharmaceutical administration. The total number of students
enrolled in the College during the 2006-2007 academic year was 1,122, and the
faculty and staff have responded in an exemplary fashion to this largest
enrollment in the College’s history.
Excellent disciplinary research and exciting interdisciplinary research in drug
discovery, drug action, drug delivery, drug development, medication safety, and
therapeutic outcomes are being led by our faculty. Faculty, PharmD students, and
residents engage in training and delivery of therapeutic services in various area
hospitals, clinics, ambulatory/community practice settings, and exciting
innovative practice models of medication therapy management. Stimulating
outreach and engagement activities by faculty, students, and staff occur at the
regional, national, and international levels. Our Alumni Society continues its
outstanding work to support the College’s
students and faculty, and the advisory groups
provide important feedback on the College’s
initiatives and directions. Our collective
efforts maintain The Ohio State University
College of Pharmacy among the top
pharmacy schools in the nation. This issue of
our College annual report highlights this past
year’s accomplishments, and I hope you find
the report to be interesting and insightful.
Sincerely,
Robert W. Brueggemeier, Ph.D.
Education and Academics
The outstanding academic programs in the College of Pharmacy experienced
continued growth and enhancement during the 2006-2007 academic year. These
degree programs include the graduate professional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
programs, the undergraduate BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and graduate MS and
PhD programs.
Doctor of Pharmacy Programs
Pharmacists place an emphasis on medication therapy
management, a patient-focused orientation to pharmacy practice,
which entails a shared responsibility between the patient,
pharmacist, and other health care professionals toward achieving
positive therapeutic outcomes. The
Entry-Level PharmD (ELPD)
program prepares students
for licensure as a
pharmacist and
prepares them to
embrace this
mission of a
patient-focused
orientation. The
program consists
of four years of study. Three years of
didactic course work cover principles
of pharmaceutical, administrative, and
clinical sciences, with some pharmacy
2007 PharmD Graduates
practice experiences included in the first
and third years. The fourth year is devoted
to full-time professional experience.
The Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy Program (NTPD), a distance
learning program, provides licensed pharmacists at the baccalaureate level the
opportunity to enhance their skills and earn the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The
first NTPD class entered in January, 2001, and the final class was admitted January,
2007. At the end of 2006/2007 academic year seventy-two Doctor of Pharmacy
degrees had been earned by students in the NTPD program. As of July 2007 there
were ninety-five active students in the program.
The inter-professional combined degree programs in the College, the
PharmD/Master in Business Administration (PharmD/MBA) and the
PharmD/Master in Public Health (PharmD/MPH), complete our graduate
professional programs.
In Autumn 2006 we admitted 117 PharmD students from an impressive pool of
955 applicants. We continue to draw the highest quality students. This group boasts
a mean GPA of 3.6, a mean composite PCAT score of 85th percentile and 75%
held academic degrees (48% of the group completed pre-pharmacy studies at OSU).
This P-1 class is comprised of 69% female, 66% from the State of Ohio, and 19%
from minority-presence groups.
Student financial aid awarded to our students increased this year by 14% in 2006
to $13,614,947. Our 3rd Annual Endowed Scholarship Donors and Student
Recipient Reception acknowledged our generous
scholarship donors and brought them together with
the student scholarship recipients and their families.
Thirty-four students were admitted to the sixth
class of the Early Admissions Pathway, geared
towards Honors students. They joined 46 returning
EAP students and together compose the 160
Honors students in the college, many of whom
participate in undergraduate research projects and
research competitions.
In addition to their coursework PharmD
students are active in student professional
Quality experiential rotation sites
are critical to teaching our
students in real-life settings. The
OSU Student Health Center was
named the ‘Site of the Year’ in
2007. Our students credit Joe
Makarich, Pharmacy Services
Manager, for the rewarding
teaching experience they receive
at this site. Joe holds a basic
belief that it is his responsibility to
‘pay back’ to the profession that
has been so good to him. And the
best way to accomplish this,
according to Joe is to provide a
venue for students to learn in a
supportive, participatory
environment. In so doing he is
actually developing his own
replacement.
Joe‘s students are appreciative
of the team spirit he fosters in the
pharmacy and they participate
fully in all pharmacist activities.
They interact with physicians,
nurses, specialists and therapists
at the Student Health Center. They
give flu shots and make
continuing education
presentations to the staff. But
most valuable are the opportunities
presented to them to
counsel the OSU students who
compose the patient population.
They present a variety of health
issues and are inquisitive and
open to counseling.
During the 2006-2007 academic year 377 pharmacy students engaged in
clerkship rotations here in the Columbus area, statewide and nationally. Currently,
890 experiential preceptors are approved and registered with our College, teaching
our students in the field. The distribution of these students is shown in Figure 2.
The ‘Site of the Year’ was awarded to the OSU Student Health Center, Joe
Makarich, Pharmacy Services Manager.
Mike Berger, one of our first Mike refers to his PharmD
Non-Traditional Doctor of program as a ‘renaissance’ in his
Pharmacy graduates (2003), professional life. His interactions
credits the distance program for with faculty and fellow students
his career change and
‘revived’ him intellectually and
advancement. He is currently the instilled a new vigor for his
outpatient oncology Specialty profession. While completing the
Practice Pharmacist at
program, Mike sought out a
JamesCare in Dublin, an OSU position where he could engage
Medical Center ambulatory facility patients in an outpatient setting.
dedicated to treating women At the JamesCare facility, Mike
diagnosed with breast cancer. counsels patients, dispenses
chemotherapy, serves as a drug
information resource, sits on the
IRB committee for the James and
precepts pharmacy students and
residents. Mike is especially
excited about his teaching
activities at the college, where he
teaches breast cancer
therapeutics to PharmD students.
Mike and his wife, Megan, and
children, Caroline and Andrew,
live in Columbus.
Of the 111 students who received their Doctor of Pharmacy degrees in
June 2007, 14 graduated cum laude, 11 magna cum laude and 2 graduated
summa cum laude. Our students graduate from OSU prepared to accept
positions in hospitals, community/ambulatory pharmacies, managed care
and other interesting pharmacy professions. We continue to see our students
excel in their performance on the NAPLEX and MPJE licensure
exams…99% pass rates for both exams (first-time candidates).
James Boakye-Dankwah Jr.'s
parents came to the US in 1981,
from a small village of the Ashanti
Kingdom in Ghana, West Africa.
James, Jr, born in Athens,
Georgia, while his father was a
graduate student at the University
of Georgia, will succeed his
father as the second in his family
to earn a doctoral degree. His
mother, Roslyn, a registered
nurse, and father, James, an OSU
Alum, ingrained in their children
the principles of faith, discipline
and dedication. James, Jr. will
earn a Doctor of Pharmacy
degree with honors in 2008.
James credits his career
direction to Dr. Ken Hale,
Assistant Dean for Professional
and External Affairs. A High
School counselor connected
James with Dr. Hale, resulting in
an internship at OSU. That was all
James needed to ignite his
interest and passion for the
profession of Pharmacy. Says Dr.
Hale, “Given his character, work
ethic, leadership abilities and
commitment to his studies, I have
no doubt James will make a real
difference in our profession".
James is making his university
experience count in numerous
ways. He presently serves on the
Dean’s Diversity Committee and is
the National Secretary of Finance
for the Student National
Pharmaceutical Association.
Undergraduate Program:
Bachelor of Science in the Pharmaceutical Sciences:
Students in the Bachelor of Science in the Pharmaceutical Sciences (BSPS)
program study the exciting areas of drug discovery, drug delivery, drug action, drug
distribution and pharmacoeconomics. The 4-year undergraduate program builds a strong
science foundation, develops essential laboratory skills, and provides the experience and
training necessary for graduate education, graduate professional education, or a healthrelated
career.
Figure 4: Enrollment Growth in the BSPS Program
This program remains very strong, with an 80% retention rate. 145 new freshmen
brought our total BSPS student enrollment to 479 this academic year. Slightly more
than half the class are female, 25% from minority-presence groups and 31% in the
University Honors Program. By the end of Spring Quarter 2007 the mean GPA for this
group was 3.18.
Eighteen BSPS students are currently participating in undergraduate research projects.
Many of our top students in this program entered our PharmD program in the fall,
while others have gone on to medical school, graduate school, or one of many career
options. We graduated 101 BSPS students in the 2006-2007 academic year, our largest
class to date. Of this number 36 students graduated with Latin Honors.
Linsey McFadden, from Dayton,
Ohio, will earn her Bachelor of
Science in Pharmaceutical
Sciences degree in June 2008.
She is interested in earning her
PharmD degree and wants to
pursue her professional interest in
clinical pharmacy, specifically
hospital pharmacy.
Linsey credits her interest in
research to Dr. Jim McAuley,
Professor of Pharmacy Practice.
It was during her work in his
Epilepsy Clinic that she learned
how to bridge the gap between
research and patient care. During
this time, Linsey was also given
the opportunity to present her
research at a national conference,
an important experience for a
young student.
Because her cultural heritage is
very important to her, Linsey
keeps her Greek ties alive and
thriving through her connections
with the Greek Church and OSU
student cultural organizations.
Linsey is active in the Pre-
Pharmacy Club and serves on
the BSPS (Bachelor of Science
in Pharmaceutical Sciences)
Program Committee.
‘Buckeyes all the way’,
brothers Ian (21), Devin (20) and
Trevor Miller (18) are here
together at OSU from their
hometown, Wheelersburg, Ohio.
Devin and Ian, both in the BSPS
Program in Pharmacy, and
Trevor in a pre-med program, all
live near the OSU Medical
Center, close to their friends,
their classes and close enough
to each other to retain their
family ties.
The brothers are from a family
of 7 children. Their father, a
Chemical Engineer, and their
mother, currently a student at
OU, clearly value education and
encouraged the brothers
towards higher education and
the health-care professions. The
choice of OSU was an easy one,
as it offered them an exceptional
education, a fun, supportive
environment and a chance to
remain together.
Trevor is on track to become a
cardiologist, Ian a pharmacist
and Devin choosing between a
pharmacy career and owning his
own business. Perhaps he’ll find
a way to do both.
William Hayton
Associate Dean
Seth Gibbs, a graduate student
under the direction of Dr. Duxin
Sun, received the Targeted
Investment in Excellence
Fellowship from the College for
his work on microRNA. His work
focuses on how microRNA
regulates oncogenes in drug
resistance. In the world of drug
development, Seth is working on
Our faculty, researchers, and students all
work toward a common goal — improving
health through the use of medicinal agents,
developing new and better drugs and drug
delivery systems, using existing drugs more
efficiently and lowering the cost of therapy
by improving production, distribution, and
marketing.
We congratulate our MS and PhD
graduates and their advisors:
new drugs to regulate this novel
mechanism to combat
drug resistance in cancer
therapy.
Seth is from Massilon, Ohio,
earned his BS degree in
Microbiology from OSU and will
graduate soon, March 2008, with
a PhD in Pharmaceutics. He and
his wife, Christina, have two
children, Raven and Hunter. They
await their third child, due in
November.
After graduation, Seth is slated
for a position in industry in the
area of drug development. His
experience at Ohio State and his
interactions with our pharmacy
faculty will prepare him well for
this exciting field.
Yu-Chieh (Jack) Wang has been
selected by NIH as one of the 250
students nationwide to attend the
NIH National Graduate Student
Research Festival, all expenses
paid by NIH. Jack, a student of
Dr. Ching-Shih Chen, is studying
chemistry synthesis in an attempt
to validate targets for novel
compounds to see if they might
have potential to become
therapeutic drugs in the fight
against lung cancer.
Jack earned his BS degree
from National Taiwan University
and came to Ohio State in 2004 to
work towards a PhD. When he
graduates in 2008 Jack will seek a
position in academia, in a
university setting where he can
focus on both research and
teaching.
Jack finds that he misses his
family in Taiwan (parents and
brother) but has found OSU a
welcoming community. Although
Columbus is a much smaller city
than his hometown, Taipei, Jack
finds it exciting to meet and
interact with people from many
different parts of the world.
Faculty
The College of Pharmacy faculty are truly outstanding, providing excellent teaching and learning
opportunities to students in both large lectures and small group settings. They are engaged in exciting
scholarship and state-of-the-art research in pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences. Our faculty and
staff serve the University and profession at regional and national levels and are involved in stimulating
outreach and engagement activities. The high quality of our faculty is reflected in this impressive
statistic: two-thirds of our Pharmacy senior faculty have been honored by their peers and elected as
Fellows of scientific organizations or professional pharmacy organizations.
The number of tenure-track faculty, regular clinical faculty, and instructional staff in Autumn 2006
totaled 61.
Colleen Clark joined our college in 2006, after her residency training at
OSU. In addition to teaching cased-based learning to Entry-Level PharmD
students, Colleen concentrated much of her first year on coordination of the
pathophysiology and therapeutics sequence of courses in the Non-Traditional
Doctor of Pharmacy Program. Colleen enjoyed interacting with these
distance- learning students who all had their own practice site from which to
draw experience. “They are highly-motivated students and learn a great deal
from one another,” says Colleen.
Colleen also found the Entry-Level PharmD students inquisitive and
eager to learn. She sought to bring pharmacy to life for these students,
developing patient charts with them and engaging them in discussions on
important pharmacy topics.
Colleen practices at the University Health Connection, an
interdisciplinary clinic where she participates in disease state management,
drug information, dispensing, and patient counseling.
Colleen and her fiance, Joe, are planning a wedding for the fall of 2008.
Professor Dasta retired from OSU in June 2007 after 31 years of
service, teaching and research to OSU and the College of Pharmacy
community.
Joe began his academic career in 1976 at OSU and developed one of
the first practice sites and post-doctoral training programs in critical care
pharmacy. One of the first pharmacist members of Society of Critical
Care Medicine (SCCM), he helped establish the role of the pharmacist
in this multidisciplinary society. He is a fellow of the American College
of Clinical Pharmacy and the American College of Critical Care
Medicine, serves on the editorial board of Critical Care Medicine and
Annals of Pharmacotherapy. Joe has given over 250 invited lectures on
various topics related to critical care and health outcomes.
Joe received his B.Sc. in Pharmacy in 1974 from West Virginia University School of Pharmacy and
M.Sc. and residency in Hospital Pharmacy from The Ohio State University (OSU) in 1976. Joe and his
wife, Desma, now live in Austin Texas where Joe remains active in his profession as an independent
consultant and Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas-Austin.

The Division of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy is composed of faculty members
with diversified research interests representing synthetic organic,
natural products, and biological chemistry. Research in medicinal
chemistry emphasizes drug design and includes:
❖ the synthesis of organic medicinal products,
❖ elucidation of the biochemistry of medicinal agents,
❖ examination of the relationship of chemical structure to
biological activity, qualitative and quantitative analysis of
drugs and related products, application of computational
chemistry to drug design.
Research in pharmacognosy emphasizes drug discovery and
encompasses:
❖ the isolation and structure determination of
pharmacologically active natural products from plants and
microbes,
❖ studies on the structure and biochemistry of biological products,
❖ examination of the biosynthesis of natural products,
❖ evaluation of the biochemical effects of these active constituents.
Karl Werbovetz’s experience at the
Walter Reed Army Institute of
Research gave him the opportunity to
see drug development in action and
formed his ideas for current
programs and collaborations here at
OSU. His research now is in the area
of anti-parasitic drug discovery and
development. A major problem in
developing countries, lethal
parasites, carried by insects, are a
major cause of death. As there is no
Pui-Kai (Tom) Li
Chair
financial incentive to develop drugs
in this area, Karl works with NIH,
WHO and the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation to fund his research.
Karl joined our College in 2000 and
found a new commitment to
infectious disease research here at
OSU. His collaborations with
colleagues across campus are
building a bridge between Pharmacy
and other health units to continue
this important work in the area of
Werner Tjarks was born and
raised in Bremen Germany, a
northern seaport town. Werner’s
studies in chemistry, drug design
and environmental aspects in
Germany led him to the US in the
early nineties to work with
Dr. Albert Soloway in a postdoctoral
position. In 1997 he took
a position as a Research Scientist
and now as a faculty member,
focuses in the area of cancer
research, specifically nucleoside
chemistry. Wener is attempting to
apply this science to the
development of anti-cancer drugs.
His research team is using
neutron-capture therapy to treat
cancer. Werner recalls that Dr.
Soloway was never too busy to
talk with any of his colleagues.
His office door was always open
giving his research group the
accessibility to him so critical to
their success in the lab.
Werner finds the academic
climate at OSU conducive to
collaboration and has forged
important relationships with
colleagues from the College of
Medicine and the Veterinary
Biological Science Department.
This year, Dr. Tjarks was
promoted to Associate Professor
of Pharmacy.
infectious disease.
From a small town in upstate
New York (Holland Patent), Karl is
happy to have found a home at Ohio
State, both professionally and
personally. He and his wife, Julie,
are raising their family of 3 (Luke,
Ben and Graham) in Worthington.
This year, Dr. Werbovetz was
promoted to Associate Professor of
Pharmacy.
Mamuka Kvaratskhelia earned
his PhD in the Republic of
Georgia and completed post
doctoral work in Britain. He
came to the US in 2000 to join
the scientists at the National
Cancer Institute. In 2003
Mamuka joined our college
faculty in the division of
Pharmaceutics.
In developing a strong
externally sponsored research
program, Mamuka has become a
very active member of OSU’s
Center for Retrovirus Research.
His research is aimed at a better
understanding of the structural
and mechanistic foundations of
HIV replication complexes. He
aims to exploit the knowledge
obtained for the rational design
of new antiviral therapies. In this
work he has pioneered novel
and powerful mass
spectrometric protein foot
printing approaches. The
importance of Kvaratskhelia’s
innovative research has been
recognized by NIH support of
two projects: “Structural Studies
of HIV-1 Integration” and “HIV-1
Pharmaceutics is the science of drug delivery and has a multidisciplinary emphasis.
Areas of pharmaceutics include:
❖ the preparation and stability of suitable dosage forms,
❖ design and evaluation of dosing regimens and dosage forms (delivery systems)
that overcome barriers and optimize drug action (and minimize adverse effects),
❖ understanding of barriers that influence drug absorption and prevent a drug
from reaching its site of action,
❖ quantitative characterization of both the drug
concentration-effect relationship and the
concentration-time profile of the drug after it enters
the body.
Faculty research in the Division of Pharmaceutics focuses
on cancer chemotherapy, drug delivery systems,
pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and physical
pharmacy.
Pharmacology includes:
❖ the study of drug effects in biological systems,
❖ the determination of the mechanisms by which drugs produce their effects,
optimization of therapeutic regimens.
An understanding of the nature of drug action and the vulnerability of living
systems to alterations by chemicals serves as the basis on which new therapeutic
agents are developed and toxic consequences of chemical exposure are alleviated.
Since drugs are chemical substances that modify biological or physiological
processes, pharmacology involves many diverse and
inter-related scientific disciplines. These include
chemistry, biochemistry, pathophysiology, cellular
and molecular biology, and others.
Pharmacology is a diverse and interdisciplinary
field that ranges from the design and evaluation of
drug effects at the cellular and subcellular levels
(biochemical and molecular pharmacology) to the
study of drug effects in intact animal models and in
humans (experimental and clinical pharmacology).
Lane Wallace
Chair
Kari Hoyt’s work in pathology
while at a hospital lab in
Pittsburgh sparked an interest in
the development of drugs and
the treatment of disease. While
at the University of Pittsburgh,
Kari studied why cells die in
stroke victims and how to use
that information to find drugs to
arrest that process.
Kari joined OSU in 2000 and is
currently studying chronic
neuro-degenerative diseases
(Parkinson’s and Huntington’s
diseases). She is developing
therapies that will protect
people from acquiring these
diseases in the future.
Kari finds OSU a supportive
environment for her scientific
research. She and her students
(graduate and undergraduate)
carry on their research in a wellequipped
laboratory and have
easy access to other
researchers on campus working
in similar areas.
Dr. Hoyt was promoted this
year to Associate Professor of
Kristin Casper earned her B.S.
and Pharm.D. degrees from the
University of Toledo. She came
to OSU to do an ambulatory
care residency with Marialice
Bennett and never left, having
taken a faculty position here in
the College in 1999.
Kristin found OSU very
supportive of communitybased
initiatives, which led to
a partnership with Kroger
Pharmacy. Kroger Patient Care
Center, which offers expanded
patient care services such as
wellness screenings,
immunizations, medication
therapy management, and
disease management, has
evolved from this partnership.
The Patient Care Center serves
as Kristin’s primary practice
site, and offers a great
opportunity to care for patients
and precept students.
Three children (Alex, 5, and
IT support is critical in every
organization. Casey Hoerig,
Systems Specialist, exemplifies
the competency and
responsiveness of our college
computer support group. Casey
earned his BS degree in
Computer Science from OSU in
2005. In his first real ‘full-time’
job, Casey has already
demonstrated his understanding
of the connection between a
smooth technical backdrop and
fulfilling the mission of an
organization. Casey provides
support for computing in the
college and is particularly
excited to be working with
students on their research
activities. He is challenged by
the many troubleshooting
computer problems he
encounters every day and the
new, emerging, technologies
flooding the market place.
It is no wonder Casey was
selected for the Outstanding
Staff Award for 2006/2007.
Nomination letters included such
comments from our staff: ‘… he
actually listens to me’ and ‘…he
goes the extra mile’ and
’…brings a speed to bear to
solving computer problems that
can justly be compared with
Tedd Ginn’s speed on the football
field’.
Research and Scholarship
College faculty, students and research staff maintained
an extensive research program in the four disciplinary
areas of the pharmaceutical sciences; medicinal chemistry
and pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, and
pharmaceutical administration. Research efforts reflected
all aspects of the discovery, development and use of
medicines. Research in the college underpins the
education of approximately 100 graduate students and is
the foundation of the college’s scholarly productivity.
The scholarship of the faculty included 230 peerreviewed
journal articles and book chapters, an
extraordinary increase of 40% over 2005-2006. In 2006-
2007 sponsored research funds awarded to College
faculty totaled $7.67M, an increase of 22% over the
previous year. Research sponsorship was primarily from
the National Institutes of Health and also included
awards from the Department of Defense, the National Science
Foundation, and private foundations and companies.
Linda Bendinelli served as
President of the College of
Pharmacy Alumni Society 2005-
2007. Her enthusiasm for OSU and
our college is contagious. Linda's
leadership kept our alumni active
and engaged in activities at the
college. She is most proud of the
society's support of the College
White Coat Ceremony and their
continued support of students and
academic programs. For Linda
herself, this leadership role
reconnected her with the college
and the faculty and students she
so respects.
A Non-Traditional PharmD
student herself, Linda is excited
to be learning along side
pharmacists from many different
fields (hospital, retail, research,
managed care, long-term care).
She is gaining professional
confidence and experiences with
every new rotation. Although
difficult at times to fit this
program into her life (Linda and
her husband have 2 children in
college), she is very happy that
she made this decision and is
looking forward to a December
2007 graduation.
Linda is currently an Oncology
Pharmacist at Riverside Hospital
in Columbus.
Pharmacy students learn early
in their program that outreach is
an important part of their
professional activities. Our
students involved in APhA-ASP,
Academy of Student
Pharmacists, the world’s largest
pharmacy student organization,
explore many career paths
in pharmacy today. They
attend regional meetings and
participate in patient counseling
competitions.
Throughout the academic
year they contribute their time
and energy to the many patient
care projects the organization
supports; Katy’s Kids, Heartburn
Awareness, Operation
Diabetes, Operation
Immunization, and Poison
Education.
Students find that joining ASP
provides leadership
opportunities, networking and
career development. They meet
other pharmacy students and
practitioners from all over the
world. Perhaps most
important…they extend their
learning beyond our campus
walls and discover ways to use
their expertise and energy to
benefit the public.
Outreach and Engagement
The College of Pharmacy continues meaningful and mutually beneficial
collaborations with university colleagues and partners outside the academic
community. Director of Outreach and Engagement, Professor Jerry Cable,
encourages faculty to not only teach students who attend the College but also
engage in:
❖ Teaching that enables learning beyond the campus walls;
❖ Research that makes discovery useful beyond the
academic community;
❖ Service that benefits the public.
Current partnerships include:
❖ OSU Extension;
❖ Columbus Neighborhood Health Center (CNHC);
❖ Kroger;
❖ Cardinal Health-Life Care Alliance;
❖ Capital Park, Columbus Public Health Department
and ColumbusFree Clinic;
❖ Life-Care Alliance; Columbus Public Schools;
Central Ohio Poison Center; and Catholic Social
Services/BRC Properties, Inc.
Pharmacy students engage in immunization administration
and education, diabetes screening and education, medication
safety, brown-bag mediation reviews, assistance to senior citizens considering
Medicare Part-D plan options, health fairs/screenings and service at Central Ohio
free medical clinics. Pharmacy students contributed thousands of hours of
community service through health related events, community-based programs for
senior citizens and underserved people, tutoring, and the like.
Ken Hale, Assistant Dean for Professional and External Affairs, is involved in
developing initiatives focusing on educational outreach, such as an introduction to
pharmacy pedagogy at other Ohio universities, and is collaborating with other
Pharmacy faculty on a “K through college” medication safety programming
initiative. Dean Hale teaches undergraduate and professional students and assists
in the ongoing development of diversity initiatives in the College.
Professional continuing education (CE) is a critical component of outreach to
our professional colleagues. Jerry Cable serves as CE Administrator and is assisted
by Barbara Hegler, Program Manager. Together they administer and manage Ohio
and ACPE continuing education programs, including the 5th Annual Autumn
Symposium held September 7, 2007, as part of the College alumni tailgate
weekend. 53 CE programs were administered during this period.
Partner for Promotion is a
successful example of what can
happen when Pharmacy faculty
and students collaborate with
community pharmacists to create
patient care programs.
Jennifer Rodis, Julie Legg, and
Kristin Casper, with an Excellence
in Engagement grant from The
OSU Office of University Outreach
and Engagement, set out to
respond to the need for training
and resources to assist
community pharmacists in their
quest to implement much-needed
advanced patient care programs.
Partner for Promotion program
pairs fourth-year students with
community pharmacists
interested in advancing patient
care. OSU faculty guide these
pairs through the steps to develop
an advanced patient care
program.
Gerald Cable
Director, Outreach and
Engagement
Everyone benefits from this
collaboration. Students learn the
process of setting up advanced
patient care programs in a
community pharmacy setting;
community pharmacy preceptors
gain access to mentoring and
resources, and the college gains
valuable advanced practice
experiential sites.
International Outreach —
College of Pharmacy Visit to Taiwan
Outreach extends well beyond our national borders. Ken Hale, Assistant Dean for
Professional and External Affairs, is establishing and maintaining liaisons with
professional organizations and external constituencies. Included in his external affairs
work is an increasing institutional emphasis in international affairs.
A delegation from our College visited the National Taiwan University, National
Yang-Ming University and China Medical University in October 2006 to foster
collaborations in research, teaching and pharmacy practice development. The visit
was coordinated by Dr. Ching-Shih Chen, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at
OSU. Among the academic leaders from Taiwan involved in this visit was Dr. Shoei-
Sheng Lee, a PhD alumnus of our College, who is the Dean of Pharmacy at
National Taiwan University.
While in Taiwan our faculty participated in scientific and practice symposia, met
with faculty and students and toured research and practice facilities. Agreements
were signed to explore future research, teaching and practice-related collaborations.
In addition the delegation met with OSU Pharmacy alumni for a wonderful
Taiwanese dinner.
This visit to Taiwan will lead to outstanding educational and research
opportunities for our faculty and students interested in international relationships.
The Willard A. Staker
Scholarship Fund was
established in 2001 by Staker’s
Drugs Inc. Income from this fund
provides scholarships to
students from Scioto County with
an interest in community/retail
pharmacy.
Staker Drugs has three family
owned pharmacies in
Portsmouth, Ohio. The family
owned business was started by
Jim’s father (Willard Staker, 1923
OSU Pharmacy graduate) in the
1930’s. Jim serves on the College
of Pharmacy’s Dean’s Corporate
Council and Southern Ohio
Medical Center Board of
Directors. Staker spoke at the
3rd Annual Endowed Scholarship
Reception impressing upon
students the importance of
higher education, the
opportunities open to them with
a degree from the College of
Pharmacy, and his and Sally’s
desire to honor his father by
providing financial assistance for
students to attend Ohio State.
Jim credits his father’s example
for the three generations of
pharmacists in their family. Jim’s
daughter, Jennifer, and nephew,
Steve, are pharmacists.
Development
Three pending endowment funds reached
fully endowed status in 2007. The Alpha
Zeta Omega-Henry Agin Scholarship
supports a student each year. The College of
Pharmacy Faculty Research and
Development funds faculty programs. The
George and Betty Richards Endowed Fund
is currently a dean's discretionary fund.
Support for scholarships and faculty
continue to be high priorities as they are
important recruiting tools to ensure the
quality of the College and our programs.
Development events in 2006-2007
included two football brunches and a
presidential brunch corporate table with
pharmacy donors and the dean at the
Michigan game. A small reception was held
at the home of Alan and Sandy Katz during
Winter College in Bonita Springs. The 3rd
annual Scholarship Recipient Reception
with the Office of Student Affairs saw
an increase in student and donor
attendance. This event celebrates
our donors’ roles in supporting
students in pursuit of careers in
pharmaceutical sciences.
Alumni, James Staker and Joel
Altschule spoke on behalf of the
donors. The 2nd annual
Research Day highlighted the
accomplishments of Drs. Larry
Robertson and Raymond Doskotch.
Two former students of Dr. Doskotch,
Pamela Boner and Michael Pcolinski solicited
alumni in support of the Doskotch Fellowship and
raised an additional $34,250 in cash and pledges for graduate
support with more verbal pledges in discussion. The 2nd
annual Emeritus Faculty Appreciation lunch hosted an
increased number of emeritus faculty from the first year
Faculty Club to thank them for their service and keep them
connected to the College.
In 1971 Daniel Waitzman (BS ’47),
his sister Beatrice Grossman and
Milton Goldberg, their cousin,
established the Leo C. Waitzman
Memorial Scholarship in memory
of their older brother.
Danny speaks from the heart
when he recalls how their
parents sacrificed dearly to send
their three children to OSU. The
Education and Academics
The outstanding academic programs in the College of Pharmacy experienced
continued growth and enhancement during the 2006-2007 academic year. These
degree programs include the graduate professional Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD)
programs, the undergraduate BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences, and graduate MS and
PhD programs.
Doctor of Pharmacy Programs
Pharmacists place an emphasis on medication therapy
management, a patient-focused orientation to pharmacy practice,
which entails a shared responsibility between the patient,
pharmacist, and other health care professionals toward achieving
positive therapeutic outcomes. The
Entry-Level PharmD (ELPD)
program prepares students
for licensure as a
pharmacist and
prepares them to
embrace this
mission of a
patient-focused
orientation. The
program consists
of four years of study. Three years of
didactic course work cover principles
of pharmaceutical, administrative, and
clinical sciences, with some pharmacy
2007 PharmD Graduates
practice experiences included in the first
and third years. The fourth year is devoted
to full-time professional experience.
The Non-Traditional Doctor of Pharmacy Program (NTPD), a distance
learning program, provides licensed pharmacists at the baccalaureate level the
opportunity to enhance their skills and earn the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. The
first NTPD class entered in January, 2001, and the final class was admitted January,
2007. At the end of 2006/2007 academic year seventy-two Doctor of Pharmacy
degrees had been earned by students in the NTPD program. As of July 2007 there
were ninety-five active students in the program.
The inter-professional combined degree programs in the College, the
PharmD/Master in Business Administration (PharmD/MBA) and the
PharmD/Master in Public Health (PharmD/MPH), complete our graduate
professional programs.
Welcome
Our academic, educational, research, and
outreach activities described in this 2006-2007
report are abundant and exceptional. These
accomplishments are reflections of the high quality
faculty, students, researchers, staff and alumni of the
College. Our PharmD programs in the College are
vibrant and strong. We have 460 PharmD students
enrolled in the entry-level program, and 86 students
are enrolled in our nontraditional PharmD (NTPD)
program. The College’s programming for
undergraduate students has never been stronger in
the BS in Pharmaceutical Sciences program, with
479 students enrolled as majors in Autumn Quarter
2006. Our graduate programs in the College of
Pharmacy continue the tradition of excellence, with
97 students enrolled in the areas of medicinal
Dean Robert W. Brueggemeier
chemistry and pharmacognosy, pharmaceutics,
pharmacology, and pharmaceutical administration. The total number of students
enrolled in the College during the 2006-2007 academic year was 1,122, and the
faculty and staff have responded in an exemplary fashion to this largest
enrollment in the College’s history.
Excellent disciplinary research and exciting interdisciplinary research in drug
discovery, drug action, drug delivery, drug development, medication safety, and
therapeutic outcomes are being led by our faculty. Faculty, PharmD students, and
residents engage in training and delivery of therapeutic services in various area
hospitals, clinics, ambulatory/community practice settings, and exciting
innovative practice models of medication therapy management. Stimulating
outreach and engagement activities by faculty, students, and staff occur at the
regional, national, and international levels. Our Alumni Society continues its
outstanding work to support the College’s
students and faculty, and the advisory groups
provide important feedback on the College’s
initiatives and directions. Our collective
efforts maintain The Ohio State University
College of Pharmacy among the top
pharmacy schools in the nation. This issue of
our College annual report highlights this past
year’s accomplishments, and I hope you find
the report to be interesting and insightful.
Sincerely,
