Forecast is Always“Sunny” for TV-2’sPatrick Evans By Kathy StrongAsfor the past decade. The Rancho Mirageresident is also the popular host of thetelevision station’s “Eye on the Desert”which is known for going live to red carpetceremonies and gala charity events.Evans, who spends his down time emceeingevents valley wide and hobnobbingwith celebrities, sees it all as just athe chief meteorologist for television’s CBS Local2, Patrick Evans has been a familiar face appearingnightly in desert homes“… I wasalso a geeky kid.I’m still a geekyadult. But youhave to have asense of humor.—Patrick Evansnormal day in his life that is anything but normal to most ofus.We caught up with Evans having lunch lake-side at TheRiver in Rancho Mirage in one of his rare moments of off-cameratime to talk about a little more than the weather. How did you decide to become a meteorologist?Evans: I was always fascinated by science. My dad was an engineer, and I grew up with curiosity about how things worked.Back east (in Virginia), we had such a diversity of weather thatit was a natural. But science (alone) did not feed my creativeside. I actually started working on television while I was stillin high school.Your legal last name is Iachetta, how did you becomePatrick Evans?Evans: I love my Italian heritage, but Iachetta is a hard nameto say. Evans is my mom’s maiden name and my middle name.Do you have an on-air personality and an off-air side?Evans: The best advice I ever got was to be as much yourself oncamera as you are off camera. I was told that people gravitatetoward authenticity. What is something that would surprise people to knowabout you?Evans: In truth, I’m a little shy… I was the class clown in school, but I was also a geeky kid. I’m still a geeky adult. But you haveto have a sense of humor.People are sometimes surprised when they see their favoriteweatherman singing around the desert. Tell usabout it.Evans: If I had any real talent, I would have done it (singing) fora living. I sing for my own fun and sing songs few people sing, like Sinatra hits. My great dream is to travel around the countryvisiting piano bars and then write a book about it. Whenyou visit piano bars, the room is full of interesting people andstories. What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you oncamera?Evans: I was in Virginia doing an interview with (animal expert)Jack Hanna. For five minutes it was just like an animalepisode on “Letterman”… Jack has great knowledge about animals, but not much practical knowledge about their behavior. At one point, there was a python on my head and a Siberiantiger in my lap… Each animal got more ferocious and angry. Itis just good television when anything sits on your head! Why do you live in Rancho Mirage?Evans: I love living in the middle of the valley. I’m just minutesaway from the television station, but close to Palm Springsor Palm Desert where I like to spend free time at places likeMelvyn’s. Plus, I live near Sinatra Drive and across the streetfrom the cemetery that is Sinatra’s resting place—I pass byhim every day.Describe your average day?Evans: I have two dogs: Guinness, a five-year-old black and tandachshund and Sophie, a rescue dachshund who is about nine. The dogs wake me up between 7:30 and 8 a.m. to walk and eat, then I try to go back to sleep. My mornings are my time to dosome freelance work and have coffeewith the dogs outside. I love to ease into“It is justgood televisionwhen anything sitson your head!—Patrick EvansPhoto credit: Brian Maurerthe day—it is my alone time. I averagea luncheon a week as emcee in seasonand get to the station by 2:30 p.m. toget ready for the 6 p.m. broadcast and“Eye on the Desert.” I also do the 10 p.m.broadcast so there isn’t any down timebetween shows. After 11 p.m., I can relax, usually walking thedogs and watching re-runs of “Seinfeld.”How do you beat the August heat, Mr. Weatherman?Evans: I try to get away to the beach or mountains for someweekends. But I’m known to golf in the heat. Why not?Watch Patrick Evans Monday through Friday on CBS Local2 at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. and on “Eye on the Desert”(www.kesq.com/cbs.com).8 August 2012 • Rancho Mirage Magazine

Take a 40-minute “cruise” to AlaskaWhen Crab Pot owner Hal Griffith took over the formerDominick’s restaurant in Rancho Mirage for a second valleyCrab Pot location, he pondered ways to utilize a small roomadjacent to the dining area. The space, fueled by Griffith’simagination and love of fishing, became the interior of a fishingboat that takes diners on a “cruise” to Alaska. The Seaventureexperience comes complete with the animatronic-built“Captain Jack” who imparts educational information on theAlaskan area, with a dash of seafaring humor. Air compressor-powered undulating swells also add drama and authenticityto the voyage. Griffith chose to use the Alaskan fishingtown of Petersburg because of its fishing history dating backto 1830 when a Norwegian pioneer arrived and saw the visionfor a fishing village. Griffith hired a local crab boat captain totake him from Petersburg Harbor to Frederick Sound as hegathered video footage of the trip on seven cameras—one foreach of the portholes on the sides of the “boat” and three forthe helm windows in front. The realistic experience for 20 passengers takes about40 minutes. It never costs to ‘ride’ Seaventure; reservedspaces are available daily to diners reserving a table for eitherlunch or dinner.
