<strong>IRCICA</strong> AWARDS<strong>IRCICA</strong>’s awards aim to acknowledge outstanding efforts andcontributions by individuals and institutions from aroundthe world to advancements in fields of studies correspondingto those of <strong>IRCICA</strong>. In its capacity as the centre for scholarlyresearch and cultural cooperation of the 57-memberOrganisation of the Islamic Conference, the Centre underscoresthe primary importance of patronage on one hand, and thesearch for excellence on the other, as the two interactive guidingforces necessary for development in all fields, including culture,learning, international cooperation and the preservation ofcultural heritage. In its first stage initiated in 1990 under thename of <strong>IRCICA</strong> Award for Excellence in Research, continuouslyin application, the program consists of presenting plaquesof appreciation to select scholars and researchers havingcontributed to Islamic studies in significant ways. The programwas enlarged on the occasion of <strong>IRCICA</strong>’s twentieth anniversarycommemorated in 2000, with the institution of another awardcategory, under the name of <strong>IRCICA</strong> Award for Patronage in thePreservation of Cultural Heritage and Promotion of Scholarship.Since then the latter it is being presented simultaneously withthe <strong>IRCICA</strong> Award for Excellence in Research.1990The first award, the <strong>IRCICA</strong> Award for Excellence in Research,was presented during the tenth anniversary commemorationceremony on 10 October 1990, to the following scholars:* Prof. Annemarie Schimmel (Germany): history of Islamicculture, mysticism and literature;* Prof. Stanford Shaw (USA and Turkey): history of the MiddleEast, based on the Ottoman archives;* Prof. Oktay Aslanapa (Turkey): Islamic arts and architecture;* Prof. Roshdi Rashed (Egypt, France): history of science;* Prof. Izzet Hasan (Morocco): Arabic literature;* Prof. Muhammed Hamidullah (India, Paris): Islamic studies;* Hakeem Mohammed Said (Pakistan), President of HamdardFoundation and “Madinat Al-Hikmat”, Karachi, Pakistan.1997The second group of the awardees for the <strong>IRCICA</strong> Awards forExcellence in Research received their awards at a ceremony heldin Istanbul on 3 November 1997:* Prof. Leila Sabbagh (Syria): social and cultural history of theArab world;* Prof. Géza Fehérvari (Hungary): Islamic art and archeology;* Prof. Kemal H. Karpat (Turkey): social and cultural history ofthe Turkic world in the age of modernisation;* Prof. M. Taib Osman (Malaysia): Malay Studies;* Prof. Abdurrahman Badawi (Egypt): Islamic philosophy.2000<strong>IRCICA</strong> Awards for Excellence in ResearchThe third group of awards, which were distributed on the occasionof the Twentieth Anniversary of the Centre commemorated in2000, were presented to the following scholars:* Prof. Dr. Syed Naquib Al-Attas (Malaysia), Chairman of theInternational Institute of Islamic Thought, Malaysia;* Prof. Iraj Afshar (Iran): library science and manuscripts;* Prof. William Graham (USA): history of religions ;* Prof. Yusuf Ibish (Lebanon): history and political studies.<strong>IRCICA</strong> Award for Patronage in the Preservation of CulturalHeritage and Promotion of ScholarshipOn the occasion of <strong>IRCICA</strong>’s twentieth anniversary, the <strong>IRCICA</strong>Award for Patronage in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage andPromotion of Scholarship was presented to the following fourpersonalities:* H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohamed Al Qassimi, Ruler ofSharjah and member of the Supreme Council of the United ArabEmirates: for patronage of research on history and exchangesbetween civilisations and preservation of cultural heritage;* H.E. Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani (Saud Arabia), Founder andChairman of Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation, London,for patronage of restoration and conservation programs;* H.H. Sheikha Hussa Al-Sabah Al-Salim Al-Sabah, Directorof Dar al-Athar al-Islamiya (National Museum), Kuwait, forpatronage of the conservation heritage;* Hakeem Abdul Hameed, Founder and Chairman of HamdardUniversity and Hamdard Foundation, India, as a posthumoustribute to his exemplary contributions to research and teachingon Islamic culture and civilisation.The ceremony for the presentation of the third group of the<strong>IRCICA</strong> Award for Excellence in Research and the first group ofthe <strong>IRCICA</strong> Award for Patronage in the Preservation of CulturalHeritage and Promotion of Scholarship was held on 25 October2000.2003The <strong>IRCICA</strong> Awards for Excellence in Research was presentedfor the fourth time at a ceremony held on 22 October 2003. Theawardees were:The <strong>IRCICA</strong> Awards for Excellence in Research* Prof. Emeritus Dr. Ahmad Hasan Dani (Pakistan), HonoraryDirector of Taxila Institute of Asian Civilizations, Quaid-i-AzamUniversity, Islamabad: archeology of Asian cultures;* Prof. Andreas Tietze (Austria): for his major works oncomparative grammar and lexical studies on the Turkiclanguages;* Ambassador Dr. Mahmoud Zouber (Mali), Advisor forReligious Affairs at the Presidency of the Republic of Mali since2000: study and classification of the manuscript riches of Maliand its region, mainly at Ahmed Baba Centre for Documentationand Research in Timbuktu;* Prof. Emeritus Dr. André Raymond (France): social historyand urban history;* Prof. Anas Baqi Khalidov (Tatarstan), posthumously, for hisstudies on Islamic manuscripts and medieval Arab culture inRussia and Eastern Europe.The second group of awardees of the <strong>IRCICA</strong> Award forPatronage in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage andPromotion of Research* Qadi Ismail bin Ali Al-Aqwa (Yemen), a promoter of cultureand learning in Yemen and the Muslim world;* Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur);* El Legado Andalusi Museum (Granada, Spain);* Sadberk Hanım Museum (Istanbul);* Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Sabancı University (Istanbul).4 <strong>Newsletter</strong> JANUARY-APRIL 2007, NO: <strong>72</strong>
