Approximately 70,000 of these TFSAholders recently received a letter from the Canada RevenueAgency (CRA) asking them to provide more information abouttheir excess contributions by August 3, 2010*.This applies to individuals who, in 2009, used their TFSA asa regular savings account by making frequent deposits andwithdrawals or who transferred funds between TFSAs openedwith different institutions. The good news: They won’t have topay taxes on the excess contribution as long as their net TFSAcontribution for 2009 doesn’t exceed $5,000.However, don’t count on the CRA being so generous in thefuture. Talk to your financial planner about opening andmanaging a TFSA.A TFSA is a registered plan that allows you to invest tax-freethroughout your life and earn income to help make your planshappen. It’s for anyone aged 18 or over who wants to buildtheir savings tax-free.You can contribute up to $5,000 a year to your TFSA. If youdon’t use your contribution room, or you make withdrawalsaccording to the conditions set by the CRA, any unusedamounts will just be added to your limit for the following year. The same thing applies to withdrawals – whatever you takeout you can put back in later on. Your TFSA contribution limitwill appear on your Notice of Assessment after your tax returnhas been processed.Tammy Buss Financial Advisor, CFP, CLU, CH CH F.C., FDSThe views expressed in this article are those of TammyBuss’ alone.
