SoCalGas offers no-cost home improvements
Customers may now qualify to receive a highefficiency
clothes washer as part of the Energy
Savings Assistance Program
Southern California Gas Co. is helping lowincome
customers reduce their energy use by offering
no-cost energy-saving home improvements,
including the installation of a high-efficiency
clothes washer, to customers who qualify.
It is estimated that 1.8 million customers may be
eligible to enroll in the program, but have not yet
done so.
SoCalGas’s Energy Saving Assistance Program,
formally known as the Direct Assistance Program,
includes weatherization services, such as caulking,
weather-stripping doors, and the installation
of low-flow shower heads and attic insulation. In
addition, the utility will repair or replace — without
charge — natural gas furnaces for
homeowners who qualify. Since the program began
in 1983, SoCalGas has weatherized more than
600,000 limited-income homes.
The program is open to eligible customers who
live in the property they either own or rent. Renters
need the approval of the property owner to
participate in the program. Bonded and licensed
contractors screened by SoCalGas perform the
necessary weatherization work.
“The Energy Savings Assistance Program helps
customers reduce their energy usage and, most
importantly, save money on their utility bills,” said
Hal D. Snyder, vice president of customer solu-
tions at SoCalGas. “We are always looking for ways
to help our customers be more energy efficient
and use natural resources more wisely.”
Customers may be eligible to participate if they
currently receive benefits from the Women, Infants
and Children, Healthy Families, Medi-Cal,
Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income,
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or Low
Income Home Energy Assistance programs. In
addition, customers could also qualify for a 20percent
discount on their natural gas bill through
the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE)
program.
Customers can learn more about the Energy
Savings Assistance Program by visiting SoCalGas’s
Web site, socalgas.com/assistance, or phone toll-free
(800) 427-2200 or (800) 342-4545 in Spanish. To
learn how to conserve energy at home, customers
can visit socalgas.com/energyefficiency.
Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) has
to its customers for more than 140 years. It is the
Jack Von Bulow
Waiting for Doc Godot
I guess I’m not as patient as
I used to be. And I hate it when
patients have to wait.
Don’t know about you guys,
but lately it seems I spend lots
of time just waiting. Do the
words “Express lane” mean
anything to you? Nope, me neither.
And even without counting
the hours I spend marooned
out on that road “under repair”
to nowhere, Rosemead Boulevard,
I’m still way too versed on
that purgatory we call talk-radio.
Lucky for me (and you) I
stay outta politics but I ask you,
how often can mere mortals listen
to millionaire athletes
mangle the English language?
Shucks, at heart I’m a traditionalist.
I’m not one of those
nervous Chihuahua types going,
“Whaddawe gonna do
now? Whaddawe gonna do
now?” Seriously, I don’t even
caffeinate.
I live in the now; just don’t
want to be there (in my car)
forever.
Since I’m not comfortable
spending my hover time level-
Jack Von Bulow, DDS
ing family Sicilian curses at the
helpless knucklehead crawling
along the 210 in front of me,
I’ve learned to take time to reflect.
But unlike the knucklehead
in front of me, I’ve also
learned to use my turn indicator.
And finally, I’ve taken steps
to climb out of the primordial
talk-radio ooze and — listen to
books. Not easy for a traditionalist
who’d rather dropkick a
Kindle than read one. On the
other hand: no Michael Bolton!
I listen to CDs my practice
advisor turns out more prolifically
than law schools breed
litigators. And it’s cool. Especially
when you consider it runs
five grand a day to be advised
in person.
So last Thursday, I embraced
the 90-minute trip to The Valley
for my 6-hour, 18-hole adventure
behind four guys who
coulda been The View being interviewed
by Oprah once they
finally completed their long circuitous
trip to the green.
And I listened to author Fred
Joyal, who is also the founder
of 1-800 DENTIST and a major
honcho in the world of dental
marketing.
Joyal shared he advises clients
to visualize the traditional
medical practice — and then
create the exact opposite. And
that’s when I realized I’m not
the traditionalist I thought I
was.
I realized Rosemead Boulevard,
the 405, city golf courses,
quicksand, and my Dad’s ophthalmologist
all had something
in common; they all took up a
major chunk of my time.
Americans spend an average
101 minutes per day in their car
— and that includes Nebraska.
So patients, I feel your pain
— really. Don’t wanna make
you mad; don’t wanna make
you wait. Waiting at Disneyland
is a drag; waiting for the dentist
is more like standing in line
for a sobriety test on New Year’s
Eve. To paraphrase the Rolling
Stones, “—ti-i-i-ime is on
(your) side.” Promise I’m gonna
keep it that way.
School News
TCUSD’s budget action
alert: schools need help
Due to the State of California’s fiscal crisis, the
Temple City Unified School District is facing nearly $6
million in budget cuts over the next three years. These
reductions will potentially have a drastic impact on the
educational programs and staffing levels that our District
is able to sustain.
TCUSD has cut over $3 million from its budget over
the past three years as a result of ongoing State-wide
cuts to education funding. More than ever, the District
needs everyone’s support to continue TCUSD’s outstanding
educational programs and extra-curricular
activities.
Voice your support for adequately funding public
education! Please take a few minutes to visit the
District’s website at www.tcusd.net (click on Budget
Action Alert) and send personalized electronic letters
to State Senator Carol Liu and State Assembly Member
Anthony Portantino. We need our legislators’ support
to place an extension of the current temporary taxes/
fees on the special election ballot in June. TCUSD needs
your support in voting “yes” to approve these extensions.
It will not be possible to make up the budget shortfall
without impacting our award-winning schools.
The Board of Education, administrators, teachers,
and support personnel are doing everything possible
to minimize the impact these reductions will have on
students!
The District is partnering with the Temple City
Schools Foundation to protect educational programs
for students through its “THRIVE” campaign! You can
help by making an online donation at
www.tcsf4students.org.
Blue Star Meaning
The Blue Star program was
started during World War I,
honoring those serving our
country. During Wold War II,
the Blue Star program was
brought back.
The program went by the
wayside during the Korean and
Vietnam Wars and was non-existent
during Desert Storm. After
the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks
in New York and Washington
D.C., the whole nation came
together again showing its patriotism.
What better time to
bring back the support of the
Blue Star program.
National Little League wins Sweepstakes
Award in Camellia Competition
Despite the threat of rain, five youth groups presented
their home-built floats down Las Tunas Drive during
the Camellia Festival Parade. With float judging moved
to Longden School due to predicted early morning showers,
the float builders again staged a mini parade down
Oak Avenue to join the Camellia Parade when the skies
cleared.
Float Chairmen Mary and Gene Sneed assisted by
David Maxwell thank all groups that built such wonderful
floats. To the committee’s way of thinking, every float
working with their young people to create such wonderful
floats.
Oak Avenue students learn
about War Between the States
All eighth-grade students at Oak Aveneue Intermediate
School participated in annual event March 18 remembering
America’s War
Between the States, also
known as the Civil War.
The community was invited
as well. Everyone attending
heard actors portraying
First Lady Mary
Todd Lincoln and Harriet
Tubman speak about the
war and their trials.
They saw a real musket
fired by an infantry and a
cannon fired by artillery re-enactors. They were able to
talk to a cavalry sergeant and see what life was like for
a Zouave soldier and even made fresh butter.
Students got to hear what life was like for women
during those times and they learned to square dance.
Finally, they heard the celebrated Americus Brass Band
playing music of the 1860s.
This proved to be a wonderful experience for all involved
and an incredible learning opportunity to kids
and adults alike.
