District. 

Rep. Schiff honored Nanette Fish for her commitment 

and service to Temple City at a reception at Café 

Santorini in Pasadena on March 28. 

Nanette and husband Kevin of 26 years, are Temple 

City residents and have two children, Cameron and 

Lainie, both of whom grew up here and attended Temple 

City schools. March is Women’s History Month and 

every March, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) honors one outstanding 

woman from each of the communities that 

make up the 29th Congressional District. 

Cities in the 29th Congressional District are 

Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, Glendale, Monterey 

Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and 

Temple City. 

“These women come from all walks of life and represent 

the thousands of women who make a positive 

impact in our region,” said Rep. Schiff’s spokeswoman 

Maureen Shanahan. “Rep. Schiff looks for women who 

– through their work or volunteerism – have improved 

the quality of life in our communities.”

Kiwanis member and Historical Society President Dan Snell celebrated 

his 90th birthday on March 22. He plans to re-celebrate it by skydiving 

in July. His wife of 67 years, June Snell will also be 90 this year, on 

June 17. The couple was greeted at the door (photo, right) when they

Dan, retired from two careers, celebrated his 90th birthday on 

March 22.

June will celebrate their 68th anniversary on June 22. Dan was named 

in 2010 as Temple City’s Older American of the Year for 2009.

The couple have two children, eight grandchildren and 14 

great-grandchildren. 

Based on Dan’s tireless contributions to his community, the 

City Council selected Dan Snell in 2010 as Temple City’s Outstanding 

Older American for 2009.

The Temple City Parks & Recreation Dept. and the STARS Club members gathered at Live Oak Park with 

a variety of fun activities and tree planting at Live Oak Park on Arbor Day, at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 11. 

The program demonstrated the planting of trees for children.

Voters keep City Council incumbents 

All three incumbents were re-elected in the city 

council elections that took place March 8. 

Councilman Carl Blum led all candidates with 

2,098 votes, followed by Councilwoman Cynthia 

Sternquist with 2,082 votes and Councilman- 

Mayor Fernando Vizcarra with 1,760 votes. 

First-time candidates challenging the incumbents 

were Manuel A. Valenzuela III with 1,200 

votes, Starene Cruse with 626 and Nicholas Lisk 

Have breakfast with Easter 

Bunny, Saturday, April 23 

The Temple City Superstars Drill Team will be 

hosting its annual breakfast with the Easter Bunny 

on Saturday, April 23. Festivities are from 8 to 

11:30 a.m. 

This event will take place at Live Oak Park 

Community Center, 10144 Bogue St. Tickets are 

$5 and available at Live Oak Park Annex (Teen 

Zone). 

Come and enjoy a filling breakfast and visit 

with the Easter Bunny. Breakfast will include: 

three pancakes, sausage, a muffin and a choice of 

coffee, apple juice or orange juice. 

The Easter egg hunt is for children ages 9 and 

under. Easter egg hunt activities include free 

spring crafts, face painting and a petting zoo. The 

egg hunt begins at 10 a.m. sharp. There will be 

four egg hunts divided by age.

safety program 

The AARP Driver Safety Program, 

a two-day hands-on 

course, will be offered at the Live

avid gardener and boasts of his 

ability to grow giant size zucchini. 

Reflecting the discipline evident 

in every aspect of his life, 

he enjoys a brisk 2-mile walk 

each morning to keep in shape. 

Dan is an honored World 

War II veteran and a member of 

the China-Burma-India Veterans 

Association. 

In 1957, Dan was Cubmaster 

of Pack 157 at Cloverly School, 

where he earned a reputation as 

a kind, motivational leader and 

was instrumental in organizing 

the first father-and-son Pinewood 

Derby. 

After retiring from Continental 

Can Corporation, Dan 

became a realtor and broker in 

town, which kept him involved 

in Temple City, a place he loves 

friendly people. 

For more than 30 years, his 

one-man office provided exceptional 

service with honesty 

and integrity. 

After retirement from real 

estate, Dan began devoting 

considerable time to helping 

others, providing rides to Sunday 

worship services or church 

activities and visiting neighbors 

and friends in rehabilitation 

centers, often with cribbage 

board in hand. 

Dan has been an active 

member of the Temple City 

Kiwanis Club since 1980, and 

was a two-time honoree as 

Kiwanian of the Year. 

He was the Club’s President 

in 1991 and has held various 

positions on the Kiwanis Board 

of Directors over the years, currently 

serving as Chairman of 

the Membership Committee.

Daniel D. Cheng, DDS is a 

new Chamber member with his 

dental office located at 211 Las 

Tunas, San Gabriel. Dr. Cheng 

recently took over the practice 

from Dr. Donald Crawford after 

Dr. Crawford retired. 

Dr. Cheng is a 1999 graduate 

of USC and is very excited 

to meet new patients in the 

community. Two areas in which 

Dr. Cheng specializes are Temporomandibular 

joint disorder, 

or TMJ syndrome, which is an 

acute or chronic inflammation 

of the temporomandibular 

joint, which connects the mandible 

to the skull. The disorder 

and resultant dysfunction can 

result in significant pain and 

impairment. He also specializes 

in full-mouth construction related 

to joint problems. 

In addition to these specialties, 

Dr. Cheng also does cleaning, 

crowns, extractions, fillings, 

inlays and overlays as well as 

pediatric dental care. 

When not in the office, Dr. 

Cheng does find time for his 

love of scuba diving and cooking.

SoCalGas offers no-cost home improvements 

Customers may now qualify to receive a highefficiency 

clothes washer as part of the Energy 

Savings Assistance Program 

Southern California Gas Co. is helping lowincome 

customers reduce their energy use by offering 

no-cost energy-saving home improvements, 

including the installation of a high-efficiency 

clothes washer, to customers who qualify. 

It is estimated that 1.8 million customers may be 

eligible to enroll in the program, but have not yet 

done so. 

SoCalGas’s Energy Saving Assistance Program, 

formally known as the Direct Assistance Program, 

includes weatherization services, such as caulking, 

weather-stripping doors, and the installation 

of low-flow shower heads and attic insulation. In 

addition, the utility will repair or replace — without 

charge — natural gas furnaces for 

homeowners who qualify. Since the program began 

in 1983, SoCalGas has weatherized more than 

600,000 limited-income homes. 

The program is open to eligible customers who 

live in the property they either own or rent. Renters 

need the approval of the property owner to 

participate in the program. Bonded and licensed 

contractors screened by SoCalGas perform the 

necessary weatherization work. 

“The Energy Savings Assistance Program helps 

customers reduce their energy usage and, most 

importantly, save money on their utility bills,” said 

Hal D. Snyder, vice president of customer solu- 

tions at SoCalGas. “We are always looking for ways 

to help our customers be more energy efficient 

and use natural resources more wisely.” 

Customers may be eligible to participate if they 

currently receive benefits from the Women, Infants 

and Children, Healthy Families, Medi-Cal, 

Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income, 

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or Low 

Income Home Energy Assistance programs. In 

addition, customers could also qualify for a 20percent 

discount on their natural gas bill through 

the California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) 

program.

major chunk of my time.

Temple City to honor city volunteers, 

with meal, program on April 30 

A special lunch is planned to honor and recognize the efforts of 

Temple City’s many volunteers, whose dedication makes the community 

one of the best places to live in Southern California. The 

meal and awards program, entitled “Temple City Volunteers — A 

League of Their Own,” will be presented on April 30 at the Embassy 

Suites Hotel in Arcadia. All volunteers, local service organizations 

and clubs with 15 or more hours of service during 2010 

will be honored. The City of Temple City extends heartfelt appreciation 

and thanks to all volunteers that have served the community

Free income tax preparations for 

low- and moderate-income seniors 

A free program for Income tax preparations for low- and moderate-income seniors, sponsored 

by Temple City, the AARP and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Franchise 

Tax Board, provides income tax preparation for low- and moderate-income taxpayers. 

Special attention is given to those 60 years and older. Counseling is provided by IRScertified 

AARP volunteer tax aides, who are ready to provide you with free federal and state 

tax return preparation, e-filing and help with tax questions. Assistance is provided in English 

and Chinese. 

Income tax preparation is offered on Wednesdays through April 13 at the Live Oak Park 

Community Center, 10144 Bogue Street.

Day Dinner and award presentation on February 10. 

Nearly 200 individuals attended this year’s recognition 

event and dined on a delicious Hawaiian bar-bque 

dinner. Everyone enjoyed this year’s “A Mahalo 

Event” theme. 

Council PTA President, Mariana Casal, emceed the 

evening’s festivities.

TCUSD’s budget action 

alert: schools need help 

Due to the State of California’s fiscal crisis, the 

Temple City Unified School District is facing nearly $6 

million in budget cuts over the next three years. These 

reductions will potentially have a drastic impact on the 

educational programs and staffing levels that our District 

is able to sustain. 

TCUSD has cut over $3 million from its budget over 

the past three years as a result of ongoing State-wide 

cuts to education funding. More than ever, the District 

needs everyone’s support to continue TCUSD’s outstanding 

educational programs and extra-curricular 

activities. 

Voice your support for adequately funding public 

education! Please take a few minutes to visit the

Action Alert) and send personalized electronic letters 

to State Senator Carol Liu and State Assembly Member 

Anthony Portantino. We need our legislators’ support

will conduct their Maundy Thursday 

Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. Thursday, 

April 21 in the sanctuary. A tenebrae service 

is a “service of darkness” where five 

dramatic perspectives of those closest to 

Jesus on His last night share their insight 

into what was taking place from their 

perspective. 

Good Friday 

Good Friday will be remembered at 7 

p.m. Friday April 22. The evening is a 

time of personal reflection as they walk 

through the gospel accounts of the trial 

and crucifixion of Jesus Christ with 

hymns of remembrance. 

Easter Sunday 

On Easter Sunday, April 24, Sunrise 

Community Church will celebrate the 

resurrection of Jesus at its 8:45 a.m. service. 

Following, the community is in- 

vited to stay for brunch on the church

National Little League wins Sweepstakes 

Award in Camellia Competition 

Despite the threat of rain, five youth groups presented 

their home-built floats down Las Tunas Drive during 

the Camellia Festival Parade. With float judging moved 

to Longden School due to predicted early morning showers, 

the float builders again staged a mini parade down 

Oak Avenue to join the Camellia Parade when the skies 

cleared. 

Float Chairmen Mary and Gene Sneed assisted by 

David Maxwell thank all groups that built such wonderful 

floats. To the committee’s way of thinking, every float 

is a winner. They also wish to thank the builders for 

working with their young people to create such wonderful 

floats. 

The Sweepstakes trophy was awarded to “Baseball 

Dreams,” built by first-time float builders, Temple City 

National Little League. “Playing Soccer in the Clouds,” 

built by Cub Scout Pack 156, was awarded Best Use of 

Camellias, while St. Luke’s 8th Grade Class won the Best 

Animation Award for their creation, “Sweet Dreams.” 

Returning for their second year, Longden Elementary 

School’s Student Council won the Theme Award for their 

float, “Dream Boats.” For their creation, “Rocket,” Temple 

City Parks and Recreation Teen Zone/STARS Clubs won 

the Grand Marshals Award.

Oak Avenue students learn 

about War Between the States 

All eighth-grade students at Oak Aveneue Intermediate 

School participated in annual event March 18 remembering 

America’s War 

Between the States, also 

known as the Civil War. 

The community was invited 

as well. Everyone attending 

heard actors portraying 

First Lady Mary 

Todd Lincoln and Harriet 

Tubman speak about the 

war and their trials. 

They saw a real musket 

fired by an infantry and a 

cannon fired by artillery re-enactors. They were able to 

talk to a cavalry sergeant and see what life was like for 

a Zouave soldier and even made fresh butter. 

Students got to hear what life was like for women 

during those times and they learned to square dance. 

Finally, they heard the celebrated Americus Brass Band 

playing music of the 1860s. 

This proved to be a wonderful experience for all involved 

and an incredible learning opportunity to kids 

and adults alike.

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored Joann Wang, 

Sarah Sun and Rudy Mercado, from Longden Elementary 

School on Feb. 22. Attending with the students was 

their sixth grade teacher, Mr. Greg Shahoian. 

Temple City Kiwanis Club honors outstanding TCUSD students

Each week, the Temple City Kiwanis Club recognizes outstanding 

students and their teachers from Cloverly, Emperor, Longden 

and the Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center. 

Kiwanis treats students and their teacher to lunch. Students receive 

a certificate, a letter for their parents, a bumper sticker, a gift 

certificate from The Hat restaurant and a photograph of them receiving 

their award. Their photo is also published in Temple City 

Life, Mid Valley News and displayed in the Temple City Unified 

School District lobby. 

Temple City Kiwanis has been serving the community since 

1939. Members are dedicated men and women who desire to make 

a difference in the quality of life for the youth of Temple City. Kiwanis 

meets at 12 noon each Tuesday at the Bahooka Family Restaurant.

Longden Elementary 

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored Joann Wang, Sarah 

Sun and Rudy Mercado, three outstanding students from 

Longden Elementary School on Feb. 22. Attending with the 

students was their sixth grade teacher, Mr. Greg Shahoian. 

Joann is 11 years old and has one older brother. She enjoys 

singing, reading, writing, blogging, and listening to music. 

Joann said, “The best things about Longden are it being so close 

to my house, the teachers and students are very friendly, and 

Longden makes learning easier.” The best thing that ever happened 

is having her dad here permanently from Taiwan. Personal 

goals are to build a time traveler so she would not have 

to live through so many mistakes, write a book series, complete 

a huge painting on campus, and to keep her dream of 

being a teacher alive. 

Sarah is 12 years old and has a younger brother. She enjoys 

reading and taking care of animals. Sarah said, “The best 

things about Longden are the great teachers, the nice students, 

and safe playground.” The best thing that ever happened was

having a younger brother to keep her company. Personal goals 

are to stop polluting the earth, build a car that would fly, get a

Rudy is 12 years old and has a younger sister. He enjoys 

playing his saxophone, soccer, and dodge ball. Rudy said, “The 

best things about Longden are the Math classes are interesting, 

the Art classes keep me busy, and P.E. is a big challenge.” 

The best thing that ever happened was getting his saxophone. 

Personal goals are to have more world peace, build a car of the 

future, continue to get a good education and grades, become a 

professional musician, and to become an architect. 

Cloverly Elementary 

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored Victor Lin and 

Jessie Mok, two outstanding students from Cloverly Elementary 

School on March 1. Attending with the students was 

Cloverly teacher Ms. Lynn Tenney. 

Victor is 11 years old and in Mrs. Pat Wenzel’s class. He has 

one older brother and enjoys drawing, painting, sketching, reading, 

experimenting, and playing the violin. Victor said, “The 

best things about Cloverly are the nice teachers, the cool library, 

science, math, and social studies.” Personal goals are to have 

school days be a little shorter so he can do his homework, build 

a time machine, get straight A’s, strive to get a Super Star Certificate, 

and pass the sixth grade. 

Jessie is 11 years old and in Ms. Sally Stokes class. She has a 

younger brother and enjoys ice-skating, watching 

television, computers, reading, and going to theme 

parks. Jessie said, “The best things about Cloverly 

are the huge library, IRC computer lab, the gigantic 

playground, and awesome teachers.” The best 

thing that ever happened was watching a whole day 

of television. Personal goals are to build a mechanical 

tree that makes money, become a pharmacist, 

get straight A’s, and to become a wonderful student 

and daughter. 

Oak Avenue Intermediate 

The Kiwanis Club of Temple City honored 

Ming-Jen Grace Pu and Dylan Stratis, two outstanding 

students from Oak Avenue Intermediate 

School on March 1. Attending with the students 

was their seventh grade teacher, Mr. Ron Bridges. 

Ming-Jen is 12 years old and has one older sister. 

She enjoys helping with the Oak Builders Club, 

reading, drawing, listening to Asian music, and visiting 

National Parks. Ming-Jen said, “The best 

things about Oak are my friends, school lunches, 

having different classes with different teachers, and 

the clubs on campus.” The best thing that ever happened 

was moving to America and meeting new 

friends. Personal goals are to build a monument 

to symbolize how an Asian girl came to America 

and achieved many great things, graduate from a 

top college, learn to speak Korean and Japanese, 

and visit all the National Parks in the U.S. 

Dylan is 13 years old and has an older brother

The best thing that ever happened was hitting his first home 

run in a Little League baseball game. Personal goals are to stop 

sending troops to the Middle East, build a state-of-the-art baseball 

park, get a scholarship to Cal State Fullerton, make it into 

Major League Baseball, and get a college degree.

Taylor Paulino, and Man-Yi Tsay, three outstanding students 

from Emperor Elementary School on March 8. Attending 

with the students was Emperor teacher Mr. Greg 

Giangregorio.

Lexi is 11 years old and in Ms. Parrille’s class. She has two 

sisters and enjoys volleyball, going to movie theatres, and hanging 

out with her friends. Lexi said, “The best things about Emperor 

are the nice teachers, great Principal, and nice friends.” 

The best things that ever happened are their family reunions. 

Personal goals are to have world peace, build homes for poor 

and ill people, get good grades, and be closer to God and heaven. 

Taylor is 11 years old and in Mrs. Scanlan’s class. She has a 

younger sister and enjoys yoga, being with her friends, reading, 

playing the guitar, camping with her family and playing 

with her dog. Taylor said, “The best things about Emperor are 

our great Principal, Ms. Perini, the nice teachers that care about 

our education, and the fun activities such as Student Council, 

Kid Tech, and Pals’ Club.” The best thing that ever happened 

was going to Washington, D.C. in the fifth grade. Personal goals 

are to build a hospital for people without insurance, to do better 

at Math, to help others in need, and try her hardest at everything 

and never give up. 

Man-Yi is 12 years old and in Mr. Giangregorio’s class. She 

enjoys playing sports, reading, and hanging out with her 

friends. Man-Yi said, “The best things about Emperor are my 

great Math teacher, Mr. G, the helpful, nice students, and getting 

a good education.” The best thing that ever happened was 

moving to Temple City and attending Emperor. Personal goals 

are to end peoples’ suffering, build a soup kitchen, get straight 

A’s, get into a good college, and have a successful future.

The Annual St. Luke Parish Fiesta and Car Show will expand this year’s car show with the addition of an 

exhibitor area. The show will take place 12 to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30. 

St. Luke Parish Fiesta celebrates 24 years 

Saturday Car Show to feature auto-related exhibitors 

St. Luke Church in Temple City will host its 

Annual Fiesta for the 24th year on April 29-30 and 

May 1. The annual event offers fresh and delicious 

food, a car show, poker tournament, great carnival 

games, spectacular rides and live entertainment. 

Saturday’s Car Show will expand this year with 

the addition of an exhibitor area. Companies with 

auto-related products or services are invited to 

host a booth ($20 fee; deadline is April 27). Car 

Show registration is now open. Car enthusiasts 

are welcome to showcase their cars. A registration 

form is available on the Parish Web site or by 

phoning the Parish Office. Registration is $20 (includes 

T-shirt and Dash Plaque); deadline is April 

27. The show will feature an exciting collection 

of cars and motorcycles in an expanded show area 

in the south church parking lot from 12 to 4 p.m. 

A Poker Tournament will take place on Saturday 

in the Parish Hall. Advanced registration is 

required. Grand Prize Raffle tickets are also available 

now. The Grand Prize is $7,500 cash. St. Luke 

Parish is also sponsoring a Super 50/50 Cash 

Raffle. Winner could receive up to $5,000 in cash, 

guaranteed at least $2,500. Tickets are $20 each. 

Only 500 tickets will be sold. Tickets are available 

now until sold out. Tickets can be purchased at 

the St. Luke Parish Office, 5605 Cloverly Ave., 

Temple City. 

St. Luke Parish Fiesta and Car Show & Expo 

admission is free. Times: 6 – 11 p.m. Friday, April 

29; noon – 11 p.m. Saturday, April 30 and 12:30 –

Bad check restitution program implemented 

The Los Angeles County District Attorney Bad Check Restitution 

Program creates opportunities for both large and small businesses to 

recover lost revenue. 

Through the program, the bad check writers are required to: 

• Pay full restitution to you the merchant 

• Pay a program fee that covers all program costs 

• Attend a mandatory educational intervention class 

Merchants who receive a bad check should immediately send a notice 

to the check writer requesting payment. If, after 10 days, the check 

writer does not comply, the merchant can report the check to the Los 

Angeles District Attorney Bad Check Restitution Program. Sample 

request letters and reports for filing claims are available at http:// 

da.lacounty.gov/badcheck.htm. For further information please contact 

the merchant/victim hotline at 800-842-0733.
