THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF SAULT STE. MARIEBY-LAW NO. <strong>76</strong>-<strong>185</strong>BUILDING: Filling up, draining, cle<strong>an</strong>ing <strong>an</strong>d clearing <strong>of</strong> grounds,yards <strong>an</strong>d vac<strong>an</strong>t lots, <strong>an</strong>d debr<strong>is</strong> on private property<strong>13</strong>. DEBRIS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY.<strong>13</strong>.1 DEFINITIONS<strong>13</strong>.1.1 "City Engineer" me<strong>an</strong>s <strong>the</strong> City Engineer for<strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Sault Ste. Marie.<strong>13</strong>.1.2 "City Clerk" me<strong>an</strong>s <strong>the</strong> City Clerk for <strong>the</strong> City<strong>of</strong> Sault Ste. Marie.<strong>13</strong>.1.3 "Corporation" me<strong>an</strong>s <strong>the</strong> Corporation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>City <strong>of</strong> Salt Ste. Marie.<strong>13</strong>.2 EXCAVATIONS OR TRENCHESNo person shall permit or allow on property owned or occupied by him<strong>an</strong>y holes, pits, excavations or trenches constituting a health, fire orsafety hazard.<strong>13</strong>.3 TRASH, GARBAGE ON PROPERTYAny person , being <strong>an</strong> owner or occupier <strong>of</strong> property shall keep suchproperty, including grounds, yards <strong>an</strong>d vac<strong>an</strong>t lots, cle<strong>an</strong>, trimmed,brushed, mowed, <strong>an</strong>d free from all trash, garbage, used lumber, timber,motor vehicle bodies or frames or <strong>an</strong>ything that may constitute a health,fire or safety hazard.<strong>13</strong>.3a WOOD PILES(1) No person, being <strong>an</strong> owner or occupier <strong>of</strong> property, shallallow wood piles to remain in <strong>the</strong> front or exterior side yards <strong>of</strong>such property for a period exceeding fourteen days. (Amendedby 98-<strong>13</strong>7)(2) Any person who piles or allows wood to be piled on h<strong>is</strong> or herproperty shall ensure that such wood piles are safe.


<strong>13</strong>.4 CORPORATION MAY PERFORM WORK (Sec. 325, TheMunicipal Act, R.S.O. 1980)In <strong>the</strong> event that property <strong>is</strong> not maintained in compli<strong>an</strong>ce with <strong>the</strong>requirements <strong>of</strong> section <strong>13</strong>.3 here<strong>of</strong>, <strong>the</strong> City Engineer or City Clerkmay order or perform <strong>the</strong> work necessary to correct <strong>the</strong> situation orcondition <strong>an</strong>d such work shall be done at <strong>the</strong> expense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> owner <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> property <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> cost <strong>of</strong> such work shall be <strong>the</strong>n due <strong>an</strong>d payable to<strong>the</strong> Corporation <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> said Corporation shall recover <strong>the</strong> said expenseby action or in like m<strong>an</strong>ner as municipal taxes.<strong>13</strong>.5 REFUSE ON PROPERTY PROHIBITEDIn <strong>the</strong> City <strong>of</strong> Sault Ste. Marie, no person shall throw, place or depositrefuse or debr<strong>is</strong> on <strong>an</strong>y private property or on property <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>municipality or <strong>an</strong>y local board <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>.<strong>13</strong>.6 EXCEPTIONSection <strong>13</strong>.5 here<strong>of</strong> does not apply when such person so acts with <strong>the</strong>authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> owner or occup<strong>an</strong>t <strong>of</strong> such property.<strong>13</strong>.7 PENALTYAny person who contravenes th<strong>is</strong> by-<strong>law</strong> <strong>is</strong> liable upon conviction<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> to a penalty not exceeding one thous<strong>an</strong>d dollars ($1,000.00)exclusive <strong>of</strong> costs.The by-<strong>law</strong>s on th<strong>is</strong> Web Site have been ch<strong>an</strong>ged from <strong>the</strong> original format so that <strong>the</strong>y may be viewed onscreen.
