THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF SAULT STE. MARIEBY-LAW NO. 76-185BUILDING: Filling up, draining, cleaning and clearing of grounds,yards and vacant lots, and debris on private property13. DEBRIS ON PRIVATE PROPERTY.13.1 DEFINITIONS13.1.1 "City Engineer" means the City Engineer forthe City of Sault Ste. Marie.13.1.2 "City Clerk" means the City Clerk for the Cityof Sault Ste. Marie.13.1.3 "Corporation" means the Corporation of theCity of Salt Ste. Marie.13.2 EXCAVATIONS OR TRENCHESNo person shall permit or allow on property owned or occupied by himany holes, pits, excavations or trenches constituting a health, fire orsafety hazard.13.3 TRASH, GARBAGE ON PROPERTYAny person , being an owner or occupier of property shall keep suchproperty, including grounds, yards and vacant lots, clean, trimmed,brushed, mowed, and free from all trash, garbage, used lumber, timber,motor vehicle bodies or frames or anything that may constitute a health,fire or safety hazard.13.3a WOOD PILES(1) No person, being an owner or occupier of property, shallallow wood piles to remain in the front or exterior side yards ofsuch property for a period exceeding fourteen days. (Amendedby 98-137)(2) Any person who piles or allows wood to be piled on his or herproperty shall ensure that such wood piles are safe.

13.4 CORPORATION MAY PERFORM WORK (Sec. 325, TheMunicipal Act, R.S.O. 1980)In the event that property is not maintained in compliance with therequirements of section 13.3 hereof, the City Engineer or City Clerkmay order or perform the work necessary to correct the situation orcondition and such work shall be done at the expense of the owner ofthe property and the cost of such work shall be then due and payable tothe Corporation and the said Corporation shall recover the said expenseby action or in like manner as municipal taxes.13.5 REFUSE ON PROPERTY PROHIBITEDIn the City of Sault Ste. Marie, no person shall throw, place or depositrefuse or debris on any private property or on property of themunicipality or any local board thereof.13.6 EXCEPTIONSection 13.5 hereof does not apply when such person so acts with theauthority of the owner or occupant of such property.13.7 PENALTYAny person who contravenes this by-law is liable upon convictionthereof to a penalty not exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000.00)exclusive of costs.The by-laws on this Web Site have been changed from the original format so that they may be viewed onscreen.
