Today’s ReadingsActs 7:55-60Stephen has been brought before the Sanhedrin on acharge of blasphemy. He stands falsely accused of sayingthings against the Temple and Mosaic law. He hasanswered the high priest by showing that throughouthistory Israelites have opposed God and failed to keepthe Law.Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed intoheaven and saw the glory of God and Jesusstanding at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said,“I see the heavens opened and the Son of Manstanding at the right hand of God!” But they coveredtheir ears, and with a loud shout all rushed togetheragainst him. Then they dragged him out ofthe city and began to stone him; and the witnesseslaid their coats at the feet of a young man namedSaul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed,“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he kneltdown and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do nothold this sin against them.” When he had said this,he died.I Peter 2:-2-10The author writes to readers who are newly baptised.Just as God chose Jesus to be the cornerstone of thenew temple, that is, the Church, so Christians are livingstones of the spiritual house of God.Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritualmilk, so that by it you may grow into salvation– if indeed you have tasted that the Lord isgood. Come to him, a living stone, though rejectedby mortals yet chosen and precious in God's sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into aspiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offerspiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through JesusChrist. For it stands in scripture: “See, I am layingin Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious;and whoever believes in him will not be put toshame.” To you then who believe, he is precious;but for those who do not believe, “The stone thatthe builders rejected has become the very head ofthe corner,” and “A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumblebecause they disobey the word, as they were destinedto do. But you are a chosen race, a royalpriesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, inorder that you may proclaim the mighty acts of himwho called you out of darkness into his marvelouslight. Once you were not a people, but now you areGod's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.John 14:1-14Jesus prepares his disciples for his departure. He hasgiven them a new commandment: to love one another ashe has loved them. Mutual love will be a sign to everyonethat they are his followers.esus said, Let not your heart be troubled: ye believein God, believe also in me. In my Father’sJhouse are many mansions: if it were not so, I wouldhave told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Andif I go and prepare a place for you, I will comeagain, and receive you unto myself; that where Iam, there ye may be also. And whither I go yeknow, and the way ye know. Thomas saith untohim, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; andhow can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, Iam the way, the truth, and the life: no man comethunto the Father, but by me. If ye had known me, yeshould have known my Father also: and fromhenceforth ye know him, and have seen him. Philipsaith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and itsufficeth us. Jesus saith unto him, Have I been solong time with you, and yet hast thou not knownme, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father;and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak untoyou I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwellethin me, he doeth the works. Believe me that Iam in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believeme for the very works sake. Verily, verily, I sayunto you, He that believeth on me, the works that Ido shall he do also; and greater works than theseshall he do; because I go unto my Father. Andwhatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do,that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If yeshall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.About the Gospel reading: In honor of the 400th anniversaryof the King James or Authorized Bible (1611), GraceChurch is using this translation as we proclaim the Gospeltoday.Cover image: Christ with lilies from lancet window in the east wall of Grace Episcopal Church, Charleston, South Carolina.

Celebrating the BibleNew summer Adult Education offerings begin next SundayIn honor of the 400 th anniversary of that great Anglican translation of the Bible – the AuthorizedVersion or the “King James Version,” Grace Church will focus on the place of the Scriptures in theAnglican faith and tradition in our Christian education classes for the summer and fall of 2011.The Bible has always been an integral part of the worship and education of Grace Church. Formany years Doug Donehue taught a popular Sunday morning class on the Bible that has continuedunder the leadership of his son-in-law, Andy Shook. The first two years of the Education for Ministry(EFM) curriculum explore the Old and New Testaments in depth. The clergy lead weekday Biblestudies every year. But this year seemed to be an appropriate time to call attention to the essentialplace of the Bible in our Christian life. Many Episcopalians wish that they knew the Bible better and would like to make Bible reading aregular practice in their lives. But the Bible seems so daunting and difficult to understand. Where dowe begin? Others have been put off by a literal interpretation of the Bible that seems to demand anall or nothing acceptance of “Biblical truths” that seem out of touch with our experience as Christianstoday. Beginning next Sunday, May 29, the Rector will give the first in a series of four presentationson “How to Read the Bible.” In the following weeks (June 5, 12, and 19) other GraceChurch parishioners will share various approaches to the Bible from the Anglican tradition. In July,Dr. Lester Pittman will teach a series of classes on the story of the King James Bible in the “FaithMatters” class that meets in the Chapel from 10:10-10:50 each Sunday. These classes will cover thehistory of the King James Version and its influence on Protestant Christianity and the English language. In addition to the Sunday morning offerings this summer, more events are planned next fall to increaseour awareness of the Bible as an indispensable witness to the Word of God, Jesus Christ. Sodust off your Bibles and get ready for an exciting journey together, in which we rediscover the storyof the people of God contained in the Scriptures and become part of that ongoing story ourselves. From the VicarThis morning the Reverend Calhoun Perkins is representing Grace Church in the far reaches of ourdiocese, geographically speaking, as she is preaching at St Paul's Episcopal Church in Bennettsville,South Carolina.Page 13
