Earth Day Celebration
Fun and Educational
The College’s annual Earth Day
celebration was held on April 22 and
included a number of informational booths
and fun activities that focused on the
environment and “green” alternatives.
Cornell Cooperative Extension was on
hand to offer information about climate
change and tips on how to save energy and
reduce carbon emissions, and other local
groups brought animals including snakes
to campus, giving students the opportunity
to view them up close and learn about
their habitats. In addition, DCC staff and
faculty members presented updates on
global warming, the Student Activities office
sponsored a rock wall for students to climb
and representatives from the College’s radio
station sold used CDs in an effort to recycle
some of its music collection.
Family Festivals Offer Exciting,
Sessions Enhance EMS Skills
Dutchess Community College hosted more
than 200 Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) professionals for a Nov. 14 conference.
The College’s EMS Program and Saint Francis
Hospital partnered to host EMS Connections
for pre-hospital emergency providers, nurses
and physicians from across the Hudson Valley
to provide a forum for the sharing of best
practices and experiences.
In April, approximately 50 students in DCC’s
Emergency Medical Services program teamed
up with the New Hackensack Fire Department
to practice many of the skills needed to be
successful in the field of emergency medicine.
Students interacted with a LifeNet helicopter on
the scene, as well as ambulances from several
emergency services agencies.
The Emergency Medical Technician-Basic
course, offered at DCC South in Wappingers
Falls, is an integral part of the first semester
of the two-year Paramedic degree program
at Dutchess Community College. Students
completing the one-semester EMT-Basic course
learn the essentials of providing pre-hospital
emergency care and have the opportunity
to continue their education in the Paramedic
degree program.
Safety Day Engages Students to
Deliver Important Messages
Useful information offered in an interactive
way was the premise of the College’s
second annual Safety Day in September.
Different stations offered information about
personal safety and health, self defense, fire
safety and alcohol awareness. To illustrate the
dangers of intoxication, students were given
special goggles that gave them the chance to
experience the disorientation that can come
as a result of alcohol abuse. Meanwhile,
members of the New York State Office of Fire
Prevention were on hand with a trailer to
demonstrate the safest way to respond to a
smoke-filled environment.
DCC Safety Day is sponsored by the Student
Government Association, Counseling Office
and Safety Committee. v
