We connect people who care 

with causes they care about! 

The mighty downtown oak on the front cover is made up of many branches that 

have a part in making the tree full and complete. We did not plant the tree (that 

was done by those who came before us) but today we can enjoy the shade of its 

massive branches. At the Davie Community Foundation, we are building an 

organization whose “shade” will have a greater impact on those who come after 

us as we mature and grow. We have a long-term perspective. The Foundation is 

blessed to have branched out with funds from people and organizations that want 

to support Davie County and its people long after we are gone. Although the board 

and staff help provide the “roots” for a strong organization, it is the people who 

have “branched” out to support a variety of organizations and projects in an effort 

to make our community a better place to live, both today and tomorrow. 

2010 was filled with the generosity from many branches! It was a year in 

which larger numbers of people acted together to have a greater impact. From 

the Children’s Reading Fund Challenge to Pearls of Empowerment, community 

members gave collectively to meet the needs of others. It was impressive to watch. 

Giving and grants increased, but more importantly individual lives were changed. 

All of us see the Foundation from a different perspective but we all know that the 

support it provides for the community is important for a stronger Davie County. 

Regardless of your perspective – donor, grantee, fund holder, scholar, Legacy 

Circle member, or friend – we thank you for your involvement with the Davie 

Community Foundation. It is our honor to have a small part in connecting 

individual generosity with the entire community! We invite you to review this

Competitive Grants for Youth and Literacy Projects 

Reading 

From the children’s perspective, the summer reading camps funded in each 

of the six elementary schools were fun and games on summer mornings. 

From the donor’s perspective, summer reading camps helped children make 

important strides in becoming successful readers, giving them a powerful tool 

to use for the rest of their lives. It was the generosity of new and existing donors 

who met the Children’s Reading Fund Challenge from Reynolds American 

Foundation, joined with existing funds, that assisted children all over the county.

to the Foundation Grants Committee through the competitive grants process.

Students Understanding Real Futures 

F or 

the SURF Board, 2010 was a year of diverse perspectives 

of giving as board members experienced philanthropy 

through the eyes of both a grantee and a grantor. The Board 

received monies granted from donors and funds within 

the Foundation, and they awarded monies as they made 

decisions about grant awards for youth-led projects within 

Davie County. SURF also raised money to grant through their 

annual Ping Pong Tournament and served the community by 

packing book bags with school supplies for A Storehouse for 

Jesus and baking cookies to deliver to volunteers. 

In October, SURF members ran a booth at the Davie County 

Schools Showcase as a way to get their name out to the 

public and spread the word about their Request for Proposals 

for youth-led projects. The next month the board traveled to 

Raleigh for the annual summit with other youth grantmaking 

boards from across the state. It was an exciting chance to 

gain new perspectives as they shared their stories and heard 

from the other groups. 

By giving of their time, talent, and treasure in 2010, the 

SURF Board experienced philanthropy in many ways.

S cholarship recipients viewed their awards from a thankful 

perspective of dollars available to assist with college tuitions and 

expenses. Donors viewed the awards as a way not only to support 

students in pursuing post-secondary education, but also to recognize 

achievement, academic excellence, and outstanding service to others. 

When scholarship funds are established, the criteria and focus of the 

scholarship are specified by the donor(s) establishing the fund.

Touchdowns for Education 

Twenty sponsors were part of the 

Touchdowns for Education Team when 

the War Eagles took the field against 

Salisbury High School in 2010. We 

were excited when Davie scored three 

touchdowns. Three touchdowns equated 

to $6,000! The Board of Directors voted 

to award half to students and put the 

other half in the Community Scholarship 

endowment. Current and future students 

were helped by the project! 

A special thank you to our generous sponsors who 

combined to add $6,000 to the Community Scholarship 

Fund and to the Davie War Eagles who scored 3 

touchdowns against Salisbury High School! 

Scholarship Celebration 

Get your motor running and ride into the new decade! That was 

the message of the Davie Community Foundation Scholarship 

Dinner in 2010. The dinner was hosted for students who 

received scholarships administered by the Foundation, the 

scholars’ families, and the donors and selection committees. 

Speaker Mark Cox, a managing partner of Crossroads Harley 

Davidson in Wilkesboro, told guests his ride had been “mostly 

in the fast lane” thus far. “Life can take you down many paths! 

But, by staying focused on your Passion, you will grow and 

learn along the way and continue to work toward your own 

Road to Success!” Mark concluded his remarks by challenging 

the students to “develop your own Personal Mission Statement. 

Mine is…To Pursue Excellence! That always drives me to do 

my best to achieve the next level!”

Frances Beck, James Essic, and James Wall spent their lives as philanthropic people; giving their time, 

talent, and treasure to the Davie County community. Sadly, we lost all three of them in December 2010. 

Frances “Pan” Beck was known for her 

infectious smile and her servant heart. 

Pan was a dedicated member of Bear 

Creek Baptist Church, involved with 

many community organizations, and 

was a special volunteer at William R. 

Davie Elementary School. 

James Essic was a pillar of the 

Farmington community and was 

instrumental in the success of many 

local projects. James and wife Lelia 

started the James E. & Lelia N. Essic 

Scholarship to help Davie County 

children pursue a college education. 

James Wall was a teacher, author, 

and public servant. He received many 

honors for his humanitarian service and his 

contributions to public education and local 

history. James and wife Esther started the 

James & Esther Wall Scholarship to assist 

Davie County students who pursue a career 

in teaching.

Legacy Circle 

egacy Circle members have a long-term perspective! The Legacy Circle is comprised of community members who 

have named the Davie Community Foundation as the beneficiary of any type of planned or deferred gift…and who 

choose to be listed as a future supporter of the Davie County community. 

The Foundation is better able to understand the goal of the donor if we know of a planned gift. We can set funds up as 

the donor desires and their example can inspire others to make an estate gift of their own. 

Bequests are the most common method used to leave a planned gift to the Davie Community Foundation. However, 

individuals may make the Foundation the beneficiary of a 401K/IRA plan, insurance policy, or establish a charitable trust 

in favor of the Foundation. 

We do not ask how much is being left to the Foundation. We encourage donors to discuss their gifts with us simply to be 

sure we can comply with their wishes. The information provided helps us understand and record their wishes to assure 

the future gift is used as intended.
