PBS39’s Education Outreach Services provided Ready To Learn/Ready To Lead in Literacy
workshops for adult care providers and educators of young children. These free workshops provided
the resources and knowledge to create an atmosphere of learning that encourages and
sustains a child’s literacy development.
During the summer of 2006, PBS39 hosted its third summer day camp,
Camp Learn-A-Vision, for kindergarten-ready Head Start children.
Funded by a grant from the Foellinger Foundation, the bilingual camp
offered children an opportunity to sharpen basic skills for school such as
learning to take turns, forming a line, raising their hands to speak, working
as a team and others. The success of Camp Learn-A-Vision’s 2005
sessions paved the way for this experience to be offered to Noble
County Head Start children. A second site was established in Ligonier in
the summer of 2006, funded by the Noble County Community Foundation and Dekko
Foundation.
A partnership between PBS39 and Science Central led to a grant from
the National Center For Outreach (NCO) creating a new science and
technology day experience for girls in 2006. Get the G.I.S.T. (Girls investigating
Science & Technology) offered girls ages 12-15 a guided, handson
learning experience through field trips and science exploration. This
collaborative project so impressed the National Center For Outreach that
it is now featured as a success story on the NCO website at:
http://nationaloutreach.org/OutreachLibrary/Stories/WFWA_GirlScience.htm
The proximity of PBS39 to Indiana University Purdue University
Fort Wayne (IPFW) continues to create collaborative opportunities
for both institutions. In 2006, PBS39 was the recipient of
another outreach grant from the National Center for Outreach
to create a website for the Northeast Indiana Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education (NISTEM)
partnership. The combined efforts will ultimately develop a website
serving as a one-stop community connection on the
Internet between NISTEM’s stakeholders and area students, teachers and parents.
PBS39 sponsored the Leadership Summit: Empowering Your Community’s Response to Sexual
Assault in partnership with the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center. Attended by law
enforcement, legal, medical, education, mental health, and child protective service professionals
from eleven counties in northeast Indiana, the summit provided a forum to identify the needs
surrounding the awareness of and response to sexual assault in northeast Indiana.
Local Production & Programming:
PBS39 continues our tradition of providing a rich and diverse connection for all of our viewers
and the communities they call home. This tradition grew more robust in 2006 with the production
and release of several new programs.
The documentary, EXPECTATIONS: LIVING WITH
ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE takes a telling and poignant look at the
people affected by Alzheimer’s – family members, caregivers
and patients — as they experience the current continuum of
care for the Disease. The program offers viewers the chance
to learn about the warning signs and how they can best use
available resources to find the best care for a loved one who
has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. In February
2007, this program was released nationally to public television stations across the country.
SPORTS TIPS also gained national release in 2006. This special series of thirty different 60second
video features focused on teaching children, aged 4 to 10 years old, the basics of
swimming, golf and tennis. They are a spin-off of another nationally released PBS39 documentary,
THE LIFETIME SPORTS ACADEMY: WHERE EVERYBODY WINS (2005).
BURMA: A CULTURE WITHOUT A COUNTRY is a half-hour documentary produced in collaboration
with The News-Sentinel. This program tells the story
of Fort Wayne’s expatriate Burmese community, the largest
of its kind in the United States. Using images and photographs
shot here and in southeast Asia, it highlights their
continued activism and struggles in support of refugee
friends and family, whose future is as unstable as that of
their homeland. BURMA: A CULTURE WITHOUT A COUN-
TRY was offered nationally to PBS stations in 11 other communities
who also have large Burmese populations. Locally,
was a direct tie-in with a series of articles published by the
News-Sentinel, as well as a media-rich website about the current state of affairs in
Myanmar/Burma.
THE CALL OF LIFE: 20 PRESCRIPTIONS FOR LIVING THE GOOD
LIFE is a program that challenges viewers by asking, then
answering the basic question: What makes a good life? Focusing
on the real-life applications of Dr. Rudy Kachmann’s 20
Prescriptions For Living The Good Life, this program offers stories
told by the people who have lived them, beating the odds
and overcoming great obstacles by making tough, personal choices so that they could really
live, and not merely exist. This program was just recently released for air to PBS stations
nationwide.
PBS39’s award-winning Video Field Trip series continues to grow, deepening the connection
between area students and their world. SAVE YOURSELF! THE PRINCIPLES OF SAVING AND
INVESTING is the latest of these efforts to be completed. This unique program, hosted by
teens for teens, explains sometimes confusing economic concepts in a straightforward way.
This program premiered on PBS39 in February 2007 and was distributed to high schools in
northern Indiana shortly thereafter. Another video field trip about careers at NASA is currently
in production. It is focuses on helping Hoosier middle school students connect to a possible
future in America’s space program and its associated industries. This program illustrates that
a NASA career is attainable through an education that can be earned in Indiana. This video field
trip will accompany a traveling museum exhibit that will tour the United States and is slated for
release later in 2007.
HEALTHLINE evolved further, providing twice-a-week programming
on wide variety of medical, health and wellness issues. MAT-
TERS OF THE MIND continued to connect local viewers with it’s
nationally recognized host, Dr. Jay Fawver. DISCOVER IPFW continued
to offer a monthly connect between Indiana University-
Purdue University, Fort Wayne and
the region it serves. PRIMETIME39
returned to Friday evenings at
7:30pm in January for the 2007
Indiana state legislative session with a new look, but with the
same steady local focus as Fort Wayne’s longest running legislative
affairs program. SUNDAY SENIOR SPOTLIGHT, premiered
in the fall of 2006. This interactive program offers area
families discussion on issues affecting seniors most, and the
chance to query each shows’ guest experts.
During the fall 2006 election season, PBS39 strengthened its
tradition of connecting area viewers to their government by
creating and airing local debates and forums to help area
voters become as informed as possible. Most notable was
the debate during the hotly contested Third Congressional
District race between incumbent Mark Souder (R) and his
challenger, Dr. Tom Hayhurst (D).
For the fourth consecutive year, a GfK Roper Public Affairs & Media poll shows Americans consider
PBS the nation's most trusted institution among nationally known organizations. In this latest
study, PBS was elevated to the #1 value for tax dollars, tying with military defense. The nonpartisan,
international research company released the comprehensive results from its national
opinion survey, which was conducted to gauge the attitudes of Americans towards PBS and
other major national institutions, including courts of law and commercial broadcast television
networks.
• According to 1,000 randomly-selected participants from across the country, PBS’ news and
public affairs series are the most trustworthy among all networks, and the most fair and balanced
programs available to Americans today.
• PBS remains #1 in public trust, with 49% trusting PBS a great deal. Second in trust are “courts
of law,” which are trusted a great deal by 27%.
• For the first time, PBS ties with military defense as #1 in tax value among 20 federally funded
services and institutions, with 20% stating it as an excellent
