YouthServicesTurning a Young Girl’s Life AroundKiana andher mother RhondaKiana outside herschool (right)Treatment and AttentionReconciles FamiliesKiana’s story is one of a very successfulreunification as a result of the servicesprovided by the CSI Multi DimensionalTreatment Foster Care Program in Maryland.CSI’s MTFC program is a cost-effectivebehavior treatment alternative to regular fostercare, group or residential treatment, andincarceration for youth who have problemswith chronic disruptive behavior, emotionaldisturbance and delinquency. When Kianawas first referred to the MTFC Program inDecember 2009 by the Maryland Departmentof Juvenile Services, her previous placementinformed CSI that reunification was absolutelyimpossible in her case. Kiana had a very poorrelationship with her mother and her motherwas disinterested in having her return home.Despite these issues, CSI placed Kiana intoits MTFC Program on December 28, 2009.Kiana received individual therapy from hertherapist, daily therapeutic interventions by herfoster parent and help in learning pro-socialactivities with her skills trainer. In addition, hermother was taught better ways to interact withher daughter from the family therapist. Eightmonths later, Kiana became one of the firstgraduates of CSI’s Multidimensional TreatmentFoster Care Program in Maryland.Since participating in the MTFC program,Kiana and her mother have an improvedrelationship and her mother is ecstatic aboutKiana’s return home. Kiana has earnedhonor roll in school and has advanced tothe 12 th grade for this school year. Collegebound Kiana is being mentored by one of herprevious teachers. Kiana is a member of thetrack team and enjoys poetry, the spoken wordand 90’s music.While involved in the MTFC program, Kianalearned to be open-minded and respectfulof others.
