AIS-R Parents,As we get ready to head off for summer vacation, it is important to keep in mindthat though summer is a time to relax and spend time with family, it is also a great time tohelp our children grow as learners. Studies have shown that students may drop in theirreading levels over the summer when they take a complete vacation from reading andwriting. At AIS-R we are trying to raise a community of life-long readers and writers. Asparents we are asking that you help us to reach this goal by encouraging your children toread and write over the next two months. Here are a few ideas that might help yourchildren get excited about this activity:• Children of all ages love to have books read to them. This can help build your child’slove for reading, and improve their fluency. It is also a great opportunity forchildren to experience books that are too hard for them to read by themselves. Sotake some time to cozy up together with a great book!• Encourage your child to read daily or at least five days a week. Help them to choosebooks that interest them and that they are able to read comfortably. It is vitallyimportant that students do not feel overwhelmed while reading a new book.• Persuade your child to keep a summer journal or scrapbook, in which they can writeabout their daily adventures, and also display pictures and memorabilia. What agreat way for kids to save all of their memories this summer! In our efforts to promote literacy and maintain all of the great gains the studentshave made this past year, we have attached a summer reading list with some suggestedbooks for your child’s grade level. We hope that you enjoy this special time with your children, and that you continue toencourage their learning over the summer. What parent doesn’t love a child who is readingfor fun?Sincerely,Cheza Al-KudmaniLiteracy Specialist
