5 th Yokohama-Sotetsu Cupbeen dominating women's amateur events inJapan and also doing well in some opentournaments. Sa to won the tournament witha perfect score in the 3rd Cup in 1991 andshe seemed likely to repeat that feat thisyear, but after seven straight wins shestumbled in the last round, losing to ChangKai Sim of Chinese Taipei. That left her tiedwith Kwun Hyo-jin, an elementary-schoolstudent from Korea, but Sato prevailedthanks to a two-point lead in 50S. As in theW AGC, Korea always loses in ties - fateseems determined to deny her a victory inan amateur tournament.In retrospect, the key game turned out tobe the clash between Korea and Japan on themorning of the third day when both countrieshad 4-0 scores.Japanese fans were of course rooting forSato, but Ishida Yoshio 9-dan, the ChiefReferee, commented that actually Liu Ya Jieof China played the 'best-balanced go' of theplayers in the tournament. However, Liu,who is a go coach in Henan province, suffereda painful upset loss to Korea in thethird round that hurt her chances.This year two new countries were participating:Italy and Turkey. RaffaellaGiardino of Italy attracted a lot of attentionon the first day when she started with twowins, but unfortunately she was unable tokeep up this pace.
