ENMU-Roswell Celebrates
National GEAR UP Week
The ENMU-Roswell GEAR UP Program participated in
National GEAR UP Week 2011. The week commemorated
the success of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness
for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a college access
program providing students and families the resources they
need for college success. Since its inception in 1999, GEAR
UP has improved educational outcomes for millions of students
across the United States. ENMU-Roswell’s new GEAR UP
Grant will soon begin service to approximately 1,726 sixth
and seventh graders in Chaves County.
The project design draws on current research in the field
and the effective practices of other GEAR UP partnerships and
postsecondary transition programs. The project’s objectives
and services have a significant impact on targeted students,
parents, and teachers by increasing 1) preparedness for
high school graduation and college enrollment; 2) motivation,
retention, and engagement; 3) student academic achievement;
4) parent/family involvement in school activities; 5) professional
development opportunities for teachers; and 6) long-term
partnership investment in programs
“The success of GEAR UP is a combined effort of many
individuals and organizations, including all of the various
departments at ENMU-Roswell, the administrators, faculties,
and support staffs of the four Chaves County school districts
and a host of community businesses, organizations, and
dedicated parents,” explained Steve Markl, current GEAR
UP director.
For more information about the ENMU-Roswell GEAR
UP Program, contact the program’s office at 575-624-7104
ENMU-Roswell's Renewable Energy instructor, Calvin
Brown, had his class test a biofuel TRAXXAS Nitro Sport
Car in the OTC parking lot. The students made the ethanol
biofuel in the renewable energy technology lab. Ehtanol is a
biofuel derived from grain, corn, and sugarcane. The project
was a success and the biofuel was a proven mixture for an
alternative fuel.
ENMU-Roswell Presents Fall Production of
The Zombie
Thrills, chills, and laughter were in store for audiences
who attended “The Zombie” by Tim Kelly. The ENMU-Roswell
Theatre Department presented the comedy thriller November
18-20 in the Performing Arts Center.
“The Zombie” is a comedy thriller set in the weird and
sinister Okefenokee Swamp in Florida, where voodoo practices
are accepted. In a decayed mansion dripping with cobwebs
and mystery, a former carnival hypnotist calling himself Baron
Samedi and a crooked sheriff have developed an "unusual"
business. They turn people into zombies and lease them
out as farm laborers. Profits and success aren't enough,
however. The hypnotist wants revenge against those who
have wronged him in the past. Soon the house is shaking with
thrills, shivering shocks, and a startling climax. For a young
television producer and his two girlfriends who stumble onto
the grim proceedings, it's a night to remember, especially
when they encounter “the walking dead.” Despite the goose
bumps, this chiller is loaded with genuine comedy and keeps
its audience in a state of taut excitement and laughter.
ENMU-Roswell students deserve a round of applause for their great talent
displayed during the comedy thriller The Zombie.

Security Update: Holiday Shopping Safety
Tips
This time of year all of us are getting our holiday shopping out
of the way and running around trying to get to the big sale early.
Something that we need to keep in mind is that the holiday season
observes one of the highest crime rates of the year, there are a few
simple and easy steps you can take to keep your holiday shopping
safe and fun throughout the season.
Personal Safety tips:
• Stay alert and be aware of what's going on around you.
• Park in a well-lighted space, and be sure to lock the
car, close the windows, and hide shopping bags and gifts
in the trunk.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a check
or credit card whenever possible.
• Deter pickpocketsand purse-snatchers.Don't overburden
yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and
wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by
the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants
pocket.
• Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk
or security guard if you get separated.
Steps to protecting your Vehicle:
Loading up on all those gifts is a sign of progress in the holiday
shopping. But if those packages are left out in the open after they're
in the car, your car has become a likely target for thieves. Remember
"Out of sight, out of mind?" The same idea applies to items in your
car.
Help prevent your vehicle from being stolen by always locking
your car and using anti-theft devices. And although it's cold, never
leave your vehicle running while you run inside your home or a
store – even if for only a minute. For more safety tips visit www.
Have a safe and Merry Christmas.
