will gather to celebrate the Feast of All Souls and
to remember all of our beloved dead. We invite
all to the Mass. And we would like to remember
in a special way, all St. Charles parishioners
who have died in the past year. We ask family
or friends of those parishioners to take an active role in our
celebration. We will need candle-bearers, readers and

PARISH DONUT SOCIAL
Please join Parish Council this Sunday, October 21 st following
the 9:00am & 10:30am Masses for our Halloween Donut Social.
Stop by Lower Parish Hall and gather with your fellow
parishioners as we kick off the Fall season.

we are busy and things can get hectic. Try to make

Father Flynn and a dedicated core group of
St Charles laymen are planning to roll out a new men’s
ministry called “The King’s Men.” You will be hearing
a lot more about this today. “The King’s Men”
focuses on the roles of Leader, Protector, and Provider.
The initial meeting of those interested in “The King’s Men” will be
Tuesday, October 30, 7:30 till 9:00pm, in the Lower Parish Hall.

you would like additional information or for questions.
You are invited to the Parish Council Donut Social after
the 9:00 and 10:30am Masses this Sunday, October 21, in the

In addition to your “homework” Catholic Update on the
first weekend of the month, we have added a new feature article to
our weekly bulletin: a reflection on our Church’s “Year of Faith”
celebration. Please read and discuss each week’s thought.
One of the most popular Cleveland-area sports rivalries is
the annual varsity football game between St Ignatius and St Edward
High Schools. Next Saturday will be the fiftieth game played
between the two. In an effort to overcome the characterization as a
“holy war” rivalry, both St Ignatius and St Edward have asked
St Charles Parish to be a “neutral” site where alumni, parents, and
friends of the schools may attend weekend Mass prior to the Fiftieth
Ed’s--Ignatius Game, scheduled for next Saturday, October 27.
This year the game will be played at Parma’s Byers Field which is
St Ignatius home territory. Next year, the game will be played at
Lakewood High in St Ed’s backyard. It is hoped that this “Mass
before the game” will become an annual event, alternating between
St Charles and a Lakewood Catholic Church. So next Saturday,
October 27, at the 4:00pm Mass, please welcome our visitors from
St Ignatius and St Edward. As Humphrey Bogart puts it in the
movie “Casablanca”: “This could be the beginning of a beautiful
friendship.” (Not to mention a Cleveland tradition!)
This is “Fall Fest Day” at St Charles. So this Sunday is
our “First Annual Halloween Blast” from 1:00 till 4:00pm in the
Corrigan Gym. Lots of Kid’s Games and good food available. The
Booster Club Drawing will take place at 4:00pm. All proceeds
benefit our St Charles Booster Club that does so much for the
young people of our parish. Please do your best with their tickets.
St Charles second-year theology seminarian, Kevin
Klonowski, and his classmates need your help. As part of their
liturgy class on Baptism and Confirmation, they must enact the
Holy Saturday Vigil Service. They need a “congregation” to help
them. If you can, on Friday, November 9 at 7:30pm, join them at
St Ladislas Church, 2345 Bassett Road (between Detroit and Hilliard)
in Westlake. Your presence and participation would be of
great help to them. (I am told refreshments will be provided!)
Our Hot Meal Program, that serves Holy Name Parish on
the second Thursday of the month, now feeds more than 250 people
at a sitting. We have three teams: A, B, and C. So the commitment

formally installed in office next Sunday, October 28, at the
10:30am Mass.

YOUTH GROUP GLASS JAR COLLECTION
The Youth Group is collecting glass jars of all sizes to use at
their Fall Retreat “Full Filled.” Please help by bringing your
clean, washed-out, de-labeled jars to the Parish Office on the
weekends of October 20-21 and November 3-4. Lids are not
needed. We will reuse and recycle all the jars that are donated.

October is Respect Life Month. Please join St. Charles Pro-Life
Ministry in the 40 Days for Life Campaign, which continues
through November 4 th . We will pray the Rosary in front of the
Cleveland Surgi-Center on Pearl Rd., next to the old Deaconess
Hospital, on the Mondays of October from 6:00-7:00 pm.
Prayer Vigil for Pro-Life Intentions: Friday, October 26 th ,
St. Mary's Church, 250 Kraft Street, Berea. Opening Mass 7:00pm
followed by Eucharistic Adoration throughout the night.
The St. Charles Pro-Life Ministry will meet Thursday, Oct. 25 th at
7:30pm in the School Meeting Room. New members welcome.

PILGRIMAGE TO ITALY
PETITIONS & PRAYERS
We are 73 pilgrims making a pilgrimage November 5 th thru
November 15 th , 2012. We will be travelling the many shrines in
Venice, Florence, Assisi and Rome in the country of Italy. We
invite you to write your petitions in our book and we will carry
them with us and lay them at the foot of the altar in the shrines
we visit and have mass in. The priests on our pilgrimage will read
your petitions in the silence of their rooms and also say special
prayers for your intentions. The Petition Book is located at the

SENIOR CITIZENS
The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24 th in
the Lower Parish Hall. Doors open at 9:00am with lunch being
served at 11:00am. Dues are $5.00 per year. New members are
