Garinim Play Dates in The Park 

Are you looking for fun things to do with your babies and toddlers now that pre-school has ended for the 

summer? Garinim families have been meeting for Play Dates in the Park since early June. We gather every 

other Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Luther Burbank for the playground and a picnic. Playdates have been equally 

fun for kids and parents! 

We will meet again August 14 and August 28. Bring a lunch and some friends! If people are interested, we 

will continue our play dates into the school year in our rain location, Gan Danny. Feel free to check our 

Facebook page, Garinim Herzl-Ner Tamid, for weather-related location changes the morning of the event.

Ethan Sherr is the son of Adam and 

Annette Sherr, brother to Aaron and 

Molly, and grandson to Stan and Judie 

Sherr and William Besket z”l and Alice 

Besket z”l. Ethan will be a 7th grader 

at the Jewish Day School this fall. He 

enjoys all things electronic—computer, 

Kindle and iPod. Ethan also loves to read, especially 

adventure books. Ethan is a wonderful student and an 

amazing brother and cousin. For his Bar Mitzvah project he 

hopes to volunteer at Northwest Harvest, and will be donating 

a portion of his Bar Mitzvah gifts to Northwest Harvest.

Allison Rose Willner-Martin is the 

daughter of Neil Martin and Patty Willner, 

the sister of Richelle, and granddaughter 

of Ina Willner of Bellevue and Richard 

Willner z”l and James and Kathryn 

Martin of Edina, MN. Allison completed 

7th grade at the Jewish Day School and 

is looking forward to attending Highland 

Middle School for 8th Grade in the fall. She enjoys singing 

and performing in theatric productions at Center Stage, 

Bellevue Youth Theater and Youth Theater Northwest. 

She spends her summers swimming on the Samena Swim 

Team, in Lake Stampfer and at her grandparents’ cabin at 

Woman Lake, Minnesota. She also enjoys volunteering in 

the library, reading fantasy books, and watching episodes of 

Dr. Who over and over again. Allison volunteered with The 

Friendship Circle this past year and hopes to become even 

more able to help meet the needs of special needs children 

through The Friendship Circle in the years to come. Allison 

is a proud 5th generation member of Herzl-Ner Tamid on her 

grandmother’s side and 4th generation on her grandfather’s 

(z”l) side. 

August 18 

At Camp Solomon Schechter 

Nathan Perry is the son of Joan and Scott 

Perry, big brother to Julia, and grandson 

of Sandra Feinstein of Mercer Island, 

Seymour Feinstein z”l, William Perry z”l, 

and Bernice Perry z”l. Nathan will be 

an 8th grader at Issaquah Middle School 

where he is a member of the Robotics and Math teams. 

Nathan is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He enjoys guitar, 

reading, swimming, computers, hanging out with friends and 

going to Camp Solomon Schechter every summer. For his 

Bar Mitzvah project Nathan established a library at Camp 

Solomon Schechter. He has also raised money for cancer 

research at City of Hope.

Nate Sigmon is the son of Sean and Tracy 

Sigmon, brother of Evan and grandson 

of Dr. Michael and Shainie Schuffler, 

David Sigmon and Krina VanRy and 

Monika Vacca. Nate is an eighth grader at 

Islander Middle School on Mercer Island. 

He enjoys playing basketball, soccer, 

baseball and drawing clever comics to 

amuse his friends and family. Nate will be volunteering with 

the Friendship Circle Mitzvah Volunteer Program for his Bar 

Mitzvah project. 

August 25 

Samuel Isaac Rosenstein will be called 

to the Torah on Shabbat Shoftim. Sam is 

the son of Aaron and Jane Rosenstein and 

brother to Nathan. His grandparents are 

Daisy Israel and Michael Israel z”l and 

David and Beth Rosenstein. Sam will be 

an 8th grader at Islander Middle School. 

In the fall, he will be a WEB leader to 

help transition incoming 6th graders. He enjoys being active 

and involved with baseball, basketball, and skiing as well as 

hanging out with his friends. For his Bar Mitzvah project, 

Sam has been working along with his family in the Teen 

Feed program at Hillel house and is also participating for his 

second summer with the Summer Volunteer Program through 

Mercer Island Parks & Rec. During the past winter, Sam had 

the opportunity to be a volunteer basketball referee at the 

PEAK. Sam is looking forward to celebrating his special day 

with all of his family and friends from near and far. 

September 1 

Aaron Reed Cohen is the son of Trisha 

and Gordon Cohen, brother of Jason and 

Nathan Cohen. His grandparents are 

Stan and Rae Cohen of Newport Beach, 

California and Gloria Martinez of San 

Antonio, Texas. Aaron is a student at 

Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences 

(SAAS) and will be a 7th grader in the 

fall. Aaron was on the middle school basketball team and 

soccer team at SAAS. He enjoys everything about NFL 

football. He loves to swim, ride his bike, play video games 

and spend time with his family and friends. Aaron, who likes 

to travel, lived in London, UK for almost 4 years. For his 

Bar Mitzvah project, Aaron plans to donate a portion of his 

Bar Mitzvah gifts to The Dyslexia Foundation, a non-profit 

organization that works to identify and assist children with 

dyslexia – and establish higher levels of learning through 

specialized programs promoting better reading.

Simchat Torah: 

Praying With 

Our Feet 

It’s often been said that the Jewish approach to New 

Year’s celebrations is more spiritual uplifting than the secular 

equivalent. New Year’s celebrations around the world often 

focus on wild partying and getting drunk. By contrast, Rosh 

Hashanah is a time for reflection, forgiveness and repairing 

our relationships. 

The truth is actually more interesting than this. Our New 

Year holiday does begin on Rosh Hashanah, but it extends 

all the way until Simchat Torah. And, if we look at how 

Simchat Torah is celebrated, lo and behold, it looks a lot like 

that wild partying we associate so much with typical New 

Year’s celebrations. There is a lot of really crazy singing and 

dancing. It’s a mitzvah to be a little silly on Simchat Torah. 

And, yes, for the grownups, there is drinking, too. 

Judaism is a whole body experience. On Rosh Hashanah 

and Yom Kippur we put our most idealistic intentions into 

words. But, immediately following these holidays, we 

express our ideals with our bodies. We build a Sukkah with 

our hands and in that way, we act out our intention to build a 

new world in the coming year. We join hands and dance on 

Simchat Torah. What better way to express our connection to 

each other, the happiness we feel in being together, and the 

sense of energy that creates the warmest communities? 

Part of being a really good person is being able to laugh 

and have fun. Our Tradition teaches us that we don’t have 

to check our wild and crazy side at the door when we enter 

the shul. Nothing really great has ever been accomplished by 

human beings without that wild side channeled in an uplifting 

direction. Human inventiveness is always an offshoot of the 

part of us that wants to cut loose from our moorings. And, 

Abraham Joshua Heschel used to say that when he marched 

for civil rights, for Soviet Jewry, or against an unjust war, he 

was praying with his feet. Simchat Torah is a reminder to us 

that changing the world requires our total commitment, our 

bodies as well as our souls. 

So, let’s start our year at HNT on a note of high energy. 

Simchat Torah is a time for our whole community to come 

together and express our love for the Jewish people and 

what we stand for through song and dance. It’s the perfect 

opportunity to feed our bodies and souls at the same time. We 

have lots of fun planned for Simchat Torah evening at HNT 

this year, Monday, October 9 at 7pm. Let’s take a step in the 

right direction together by dancing our way into the New Year!

The room will be open at 10 AM for free play this month.

Adult Education 

Herzl-Ner Tamid is excited to announce that our theme 

for this year is “Feeding our bodies, feeding our souls.” 

The connection between body and soul is profound in our 

tradition. For example, Shabbat, our most spiritual day, 

is also our most physical day. On this day we are asked 

to satiate our souls though prayer and our bodies through 

sharing Shabbat meals. 

Maimonides teaches that what is good for the body 

(eating right, exercising regularly) is also good for the soul, 

because a hungry child can’t concentrate on her studies. This 

year we will reflect on the connection between taking care of 

ourselves physically and spiritually, and on the habits of body 

and soul that can help us do both. 

From Why Be Jewish, to Hebrew, to our Torahthon 

and more, we have a number of exciting adult learning 

opportunities this year. Check your mailboxes for our adult 

education brochure detailing our offerings. Information will

Join our Shabbat congregation in honoring the Hungarian 

and Israeli teenagers who are visiting the northwest Jewish 

community. The teens and some of their host families

Summertime 

with HNT 

I hope that by the time you read this we are immersed 

in a real Seattle summer. As a Seattle native, I can still 

barely admit that summer doesn’t come until after July 4th 

and that it lasts just a few precious weeks. This time of year 

truly makes me appreciate the immense beauty of our water, 

mountains and lush green surroundings. For me, August will 

also have brought the culmination of a personal challenge, 

completing my second Seattle to Portland Bike Ride in mid- 

July. There were, like all such projects, many challenges 

towards reaching that goal but a paramount reason for not 

giving up was the support of those around me who kept 

saying – you can do it! 

There are often times when we need outside support and 

motivation to meet a challenge or simply to get through the 

difficulties we meet in everyday life. We are fortunate to be 

members of HNT. Our synagogue community is here for us 

for life-cycle events, both joyous and sad, a gathering place 

filled with friendship and warmth, a place where one can find 

opportunities for education, personal reflection and spiritual 

growth. HNT is here for you and for our community, every 

day and every year.

President’s Message 


families promptly sent in their commitment and we thank 

you. Now I would like to ask you to reconsider your annual 

commitment in a new way. If you routinely checked the 

“standard” box, I ask you to rethink whether you are able 

to contribute at an enhanced level. Such commitment levels 

allow us to be available to all congregants regardless of their 

ability to pay. As we continue through difficult economic 

times, it is a reality that many of our congregants are not able 

to meet their full share of dues. For those who are fortunate 

to be able to do so, please consider an enhanced dues level 

so we can maintain the excellent services we provide to the 

entire congregational community. 

Though annual commitment “dues” provide the backbone 

of revenues to keep our synagogue running on a daily 

basis, it is our Endowment Fund that helps provides longterm 

financial stability. In June, several of our Endowment 

committee members stepped down after many years of 

service. Some have served on the Endowment Committee 

since its birth in 1984. A heartfelt thank you goes to Paul 

Malakoff, a dedicated leader who has skillfully managed this 

committee for many many years. Also stepping down are 

long-time members, Steve Burns, Jack Farber, Jay Friedman, 

and Michael Weinstein. This incredible group of volunteers 

has laid the path for new leadership to step up and continue 

this important work. David Isenberg will serve as the new 

Endowment fund chair, joined by Joe Barer, David Director, 

Lonnie Edelheit, David Ellenhorn, Aaron Findley, Efrem 

Krisher, Ed Malakoff, Peter Michel and Dean Polik. I want to 

personally thank these dedicated volunteers for their service. 

As we move toward the high holidays, enjoy the beautiful 

Seattle Summer and I hope to see you all in shul.

FRS Personal Needs Drive 

FRS is collecting travel-sized toiletries and connection 

with their High Holy Day programming. Please bring items 

to the school office. 

JFS Food Collection 

Last year 1,850 people per month needed this food 

pantry. Let’s work together to fill the JFS Polack Food Bank 

shelves and provide families in need with healthy, nutritious 

food options. Dean & Gwenn Polik and Valerie Polack are 

once again generously contributing a matching gift for every

We invite you to share a Shabbat with the Shabbat Dinner 

Circle, a community of HNT members of all ages. Take 

a break from the work week and enjoy gathering in each 

other’s homes for an evening of good food and great 

conversation. These potluck dinners of at least 6 people 

are dairy or pareve and dress is casual. We hope everyone - 

young and old, couples, singles and families - will join in this 

exciting opportunity to get to know each other in a low-key, 

comfortable environment.

It’s time to order your lulav 

and etrog set, and s’chach for your 

family sukkah. The lulav and etrog are 

captivating symbols of the holiday. 

Purchasing a set also provides a great 

opportunity to share this age-old 

tradition with your children. Use them in 

your family sukkah, then bring them to 

shul and participate in the hoshanot ritual. S’chach, the 

greenery to adorn your sukkah, will be available in 25 lb. 

bundles.

Yasher Koach! 

With over 200 volunteers working around the 

community, HNT’s first annual Day of Service was a 

smashing success! Off-site projects included sorting 

food donations at Hopelink in Bellevue, stocking 

shelves at the Habitat for Humanity store in Bellevue, 

maintenance projects at House of Hope in North Bend 

and organizing donations at Eastside Baby Corner 

in Issaquah. Right here at HNT volunteers made 60 

puzzles for local hospitals, 250 personal needs bags 

for families in Harborview Medical Center, and 650 

sandwiches for The Landing in Bellevue and Tent City 

3 in Seattle. We also painted picnic tables and improved 

landscaping on the Wittenberg Waterfront. 

A special thank you to our wonderful team captains 

and committee members: Brad Lehrer, Leah Saltzman,

Many of you are probably aware of the latest hubbub in 

the Kosher community pertaining to both Hebrew National 

and Trader Joe’s. 

Apparently the Orthodox community is questioning the 

validity of the Kashrut on Hebrew National hot dogs. They 

are saying that the “Triangle K” symbol is not authentic 

and proper procedures pertaining to Kashrut have not been 

followed by Hebrew National. For more info:

Trader Joe’s chocolate 

chips, which have always 

been pareve, are now 

going to be certified 

as dairy. The chips 

will still be pareve but 

apparently the bagging 

process has changed, 

with the supplier now using a dry cleaning procedure for a 

machine that also packages milk chocolate products (JTA 

May 18th article). There have been rumors of people going 

around to all the Trader Joe’s stores and buying up cases of 

the chocolate chips to have on hand until something else can 

be found to replace them. I have been told that TJ’s pareve 

chocolate chips are the best and there is nothing else that 

comes close to tasting as good. 

Speaking of Trader Joe’s, check out their bread 

section. Their hamburger and hot dog buns are Kosher pareve

The Livnot Project 

The Livnot Project, a new innovative Jewish supplemental 

high school program, begins its pilot year during the fall of 

2012. This project takes students out of the classroom, placing 

them as participants and leaders in communal organizations 

and institutions. Students will build relationships with 

community leaders and develop invaluable skills while 

learning the Jewish underpinnings of local justice work and 

global issues. Meeting times and locations will be published

(both white and whole wheat), as well as their Shepherd’s 

sliced bread. I am always elated to find parve bread/buns at 

the various stores, sure makes it easier for that last-minute 

barbecue you might be hosting. 

Albertsons is carrying the Essential Everyday brand of 

salad dressings and crackers. Not all the varieties of dressings 

are hechshered, so check out the bottle before you buy. The 

Snacker Crackers are like the Nabisco Ritz crackers, but they 

are pareve instead of dairy. 

The north end/downtown Mercer Island QFC is in the 

process of building out their store to include a fresh Kosher 

meat section and deli department. Target date for completion 

is October, but it is possible that everything will be ready 

earlier. 

I also found a couple more online sites whose products 

are certified Kosher: 

Café Du Monde (out of New Orleans) sells a beignet mix 

which is Kosher dairy; you can view their Kosher certification 

statement on their website. I have not tried the mix yet but 

plan to order it. Who wouldn’t want to eat puffy square 

French doughnuts covered in powdered sugar?! 

Desserthub.com offers a variety of pastries, cakes and 

other assorted sweet goodies. Their Kosher certification 

is provided by KSA, Kosher Supervision of America, an 

Orthodox Kosher certification agency. This site is also on my 

list to try.
