The Pirates LogPoverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012From Andromeda’s CockpitBy Commander Tom Spohn, PThe calendar says summer is here, even if the weatherman hasn’tcaught up yet. Time to relax. Well not quite. There are lots ofthings to plan on. I hope some of you were able to help Bob Miller with theSound Rowers Association on July 13-14. Then we had some rendezvous to enjoyon July 27-2828 and August 31-September 3. Somewhere in there we’ll work in asummer cruise. For us this year it will be Princess Louisa Inlet. Like the Taj Mahal,I have been told that everyone needs to see it at least once.Having just finished the Cruise Planning Class taught by the Greens, I am into theplanning stages for the cruise. Piloting and Advanced Piloting should help me layout the route to the north. Seamanship should help me not run into anything onthe way. We are so lucky to have these classes! The Squadron is doing very well by the way. Our membership is up a bit. We aresolvent. Participation is on the rise. At District meetings many of our peoplestand out in leadership roles. Mostly this is due to some very hard work by somevery dedicated people. I hope all members will join me in thanking them.If I don’t see you at one of the rendezvous this summer I will surely see you at theSteak Fry in September.Tom SpohnPage 5

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012Nautical Auction a Great Success!By all accounts, the Poverty Bay Nautical Auction was great fun and financially successful. Theauction raised over $2500 toward our educational activities and programs. Congratulations andthanks go to auctioneer Steve Archer, S (P/C Gray Cunningham, S our scheduled auctioneer wasworking out of town.) and assistants Duane Quande, P and P/C Roger Hunt, SN who coaxed andcajoled every possible dollar out of attendees. But the buyers really didn't mind: they gotincredible bargains!I particularly liked Steve's "auctioneer ploy" of bumping up the final bid by $5 or so, tomaximize squadron proceeds. Most, but not everyone, went along with the sly maneuver. Some folks didn't recognize the finesse because it was so smooth. Way to go, Steve! Thanks are also due to everyone else who helped to put on our dinner and event. It takesconsiderable preparation, and I want to recognize everyone who lent a hand! And while I'm thanking, I wish to express appreciation to everyone who donated or secured anauction item(s). Those items are the heart of our success. Thank you! For those members whosecured donations from the business community, now is the time for profuse thanks as well.Lt/C Jerry Carbaugh, P has taken on this task.Page 8

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012A Report from SitkaOn another note, I just got back from a 10-day fishing trip to Sitka, AK. The weather wasgenerally bad: rain or drizzle most of the days; high winds a few of the days; big seas offshoremost of the days; cold sea and air temperatures throughout; and, the fish were holding offshorethe entire time because of these conditions. If it sounds like I'm complaining, actually I'm not. It was a great trip with good fellowship andgood food. We stayed on-board an older 26-ft. Tollycraft, and fished from an 18-ft. aluminumskiff. Due to conditions, we mostly fished the protected waters around Sitka, and still caughtfish. I came home with over 40 lbs. of filets of Ling Cod, Rock Cod, Halibut, and Salmon. Notbad! On the other hand, the salmon were really starting to arrive... just as I was leaving! But then, there's more to fishing than just fish! Here are a few pictures from my experience in Sitka:Page 11

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012New Poverty Bay RosterP/D/C Joanna Webster, AP recently completed our updated Roster. Congratulations on a jobwell-done! The production of a roster is not an easy task. I think of all of the details: phonenumbers, email addresses, grades, and a fair number of these in flux. Then there is thecoordination, with P/C Bob Miller, SN who updates our national data, as well as with others. Finally, there is the printing and distribution. Well done, Joanna, even in these difficult times!Request for AssistanceWe need your help! Our Boat Show Coordinator, P/C Dave Burke, S needs an assistant to helpwith the coordination. Dave will lead the way, show the ropes, and navigate the directions. I'mlooking for a volunteer who is willing to help out, and then take over from Dave in the followingyear. The Boat Show is an outstanding opportunity for us to get out our message of boatingsafety, and the importance of developing on-the-water and other practical boating skills. Please consider this request as a chance to contribute and give back to our squadron mission. You can call me at (253) 833-1393 to express your interest. Please lend a hand! It takes all ofus to make our squadron successful.RichPage 13

The Pirates LogPoverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012Carbaugh’s CornerBy Administrative OfficerLt/C Jerry Carbaugh, PSTEAK FRY SEPTEMBER 15 from 5 PM to 8 PM.This will be the day of our annual Steak Fry / Potluck at the home of P/Lt/C John McKay, SNand Cindy McKay, P. Seasoned Pirates know how this great event works: bring somethingto grill, a potluck item such as a side dish, salad, or a desert; portable chairs; and steakknives (if you'll need them). If you have a portable aluminum table, that would also behandy to bring. Does this sound just like a rendezvous? You're right. It is!For new Pirates, or for Pirates who have never attended a Steak Fry / Potluck, I'll add alittle bit about the experience.First of all, the McKay's have a lovely home overlookingPoverty Bay. The view is simply spectacular! Our BBQ is held in the McKay's yard with afull view of Puget Sound. If you're like me, I never tire of such a view. A large deckprovides shelter if needed. In addition, the Squadron will provide canopies as may benecessary. Of importance, is that the McKay residence can accommodate all of oursquadron members who are able to attend. Without a doubt, we are very fortunate to havesuch a place for a late summer get-together. together. And, the McKay's are most gracious inallowing PBS&PS to hold this event in their yard again. The Squadron will provide a large gas grill, snacks (chips and things), plastic plates, andbowls. Soft drinks, as well as beer and wine, will be available. The party will start at 5:00p.m., and should end about 8:00 p.m. People will be able to get home before dark.I've described the location, and you just have to believe me about the view. By the way, theMcKay's reside at 24425 Marine View Drive in Des Moines. But wait, there's more! Thinkabout your friends and the stories. The conversations will most certainly be filled withtales of summer adventures and sights. I look forward to even hearing some good fogstories... and more. In addition, this is a good chance for chefs to show off their skills. I'llshow you mine, if you show me yours. This is an event not to be missed. Good food, great company, and fond memories areguaranteed. As I said, mark your calendars; this event should be a priority!JerryPage 14

Rick Edel and Bob Miller volunteered their boats and Dan Leenhouts and I mannedthe checklists as we ran through the Seamanship OTW syllabus. We started out on the dockobserving anchor types, use of spring lines, cleat hitches, etc. Moving onboard we coveredcrew instructions, a tour of the boat, features of the helm and navigation systems, safetyPage 15

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012equipment, drive and propulsion systems. Leaving the dock and maneuvering in closequarters came next, followed by trimming the boat, holding a course, collision avoidance, anchorage selection, MOB procedures, etc. We finished the evening by discussing how toadjust for wind and current in docking, placement of lines and fenders and safety of thecrew while docking. As you can see, we packed a lot into 3 hours and got high marks fromour students who saw this as a great add to our classroom course.2012 / 2013 Calendar of ClassesThe dates have been set! See our class offerings for the coming year at the end of thisarticle. Hot off the presses...... We will offer On-The-Water options with some of theseclasses as well. Staytuned for more OTW information in the near future.JN JN Junior Navigation JN JNJN is only offered every few years, Tuesday evenings starting October 9th. You AP gradsshould already have it on your calendar!ABC Classes Wrapped for the SummerWith only one student registered at Des Moines, we rolled both of our June classes togetherand taught 8 students at Kent Commons on June 23rd. None-the-less, our class enrollmentthis year has improved substantially, reversing the declining trend of the last several years. The required age for the Boater's Card takes a big jump next year when everyone below 50will need one to operate a boat of 15hp or more. We are expecting that 10 year jump toreach into an age group less comfortable taking the class online and help continue ourenrollment upswing.DavePage 16

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012“Murder Among the Mateys”Brownsville Rendezvous - May 25-27By P/C Roger Hunt, SNThe Golden Ageof Piracy was1660-1730 (afact disputed bycrew members ofOur Brigadoon)but 40 membersof Poverty Bayand their gueststried to re-create that atmosphere on MemorialDay weekend in Brownsville by participating inthe “Murder Among the Mateys” mystery event.Prior to the rendezvous each person wasassigned a pirate name and character role.Although there were some minor complaintsabout the individual assignments, most adaptedharmoniously to their moniker. The Friday nighthor d’oeuvres was a typical Poverty Bay eventwith lots and lots of great food provided by themembers. On Saturday morning the Piratesenjoyed warmer sunnier weather on the dockwith muffins, juice, coffee, and livelyconversation. The day continued with most folksrelaxing and while others had their vessel safetyinspections. The traditional Poverty Bay Pokertournament took place and Filthy Jim Teach(George Holmgren) was declared the winner.Page 23

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012Saturday night was the main event as members paraded to the gazebo in full Piratecostumes. Each had read their part and was prepared to play their role to the hilt. Oneof the best “aarrgghh’s” of the evening was by Thumbless Jack (Rick Edel). Guestappearances were made by Governor Napier (Jack Green) and blonde Commodore Clearing(Bob Miller). Dirty Wiggins (Tom Spohn) ,Blind Anne Bellamy (Jean Spohn), BuccaneerBradshaw (Terry Smith), and Blackspot Jane (Jackie Smith) arrived by land yacht and thegames began. Host (Bob Swarm) started the evening with a Pirate trivia quiz. The winningboats were Our Brigadoon and Laughin’ Gecko. The theme for the evening was “EverybodyLies”. Shortly into the evening, Merciless Morgan (DeVere Lindh) was brutally murdered. While he was warm from the attack, Sharktooth Brandy (Mary Quande) picked his pocketand stole his cash. It almost revived him. As the murder investigation continued, otherPage 24

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012schemes were exploited by members of the cast. Various parts of Toothless Willie’streasure map were sold by many. Hints on the killer were available for a price. It becameapparent that counterfeit money and vouchers were circulated and purchased byunsuspecting cast members. This scam was later revealed to be instigated by CaptainRedbeard (Terry Scott) and Sealegs Sam (Don Parker). Dancin’ Bella Cutty (Eileen Edel)was suspected of selling flowers with medicinal qualities, or so she claimed. The finalcrime of the evening was Gurglin’ Uma Scarr (Billie Lindh) picking Captain Redbeard’s bootand stealing his cash. The mystery was finally solved and the pirates retired to the dockfor further social activities.Awards were given for thefollowing performances. TheBeast Sleuth Award went tothree players – Filthy JimTeach (George Holmgren),Moanin’ Doris Grimm (PattieHolmgren) and Logan the BadlyBurnt (Dwayne Quande). Bestcostume went to Mad Rose and CaptainRedbeard (Nancy and Terry Scott). BestActing Performances went to Shoutin’ RogerDagger (Gray Cunningham) and Antonia Napier(Kim Miller). The most Accumulated WealthAward went to Gurglin’ Uma Scarr (BillieLindh), proving once again that crime doespay. There was no attempt by the judges toseparate the phony cash and vouchers fromthe real thing. It was toochaotic. Special Awardswere given to SealegsSam (Don Parker) andMerciless Morgan(DeVere Lindh) for theirroles.Page 25

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012Sharkbait Evelyn Bones (Joanna Webster).Sunday morning the hosts prepared “boil ina bag” omelets for all at the shelter andthe awards were presented. Theremainder of the day was casual for most, although some went to the Casino to trytheir luck. The evening meal was a“leftover potluck” featuring two egg dishesprepared by Breathless Betty (DonnaParker), Juliana Napier (Sheila Green), andOn Monday most of the pirates dispersed to theirvarious ports having enjoyed a terrific weekend.Boats that participated in the event were: Attitude,Bianca, Brizo, Flamingo, Friendship , Isola,Knotty Times, Knot Woozy, Laughin’ Gecko, LaTortuga, Only Time, Our Brigadoon, Salty Dawg,Sea Fire, S’Urchin’, and Sea Sharp.Hosts for the event were: Drownin’ Helga Drake (Gloria Hunt), Jolly Roger Rackham(Roger Hunt), Trendy Hannibal Scar (Dave Sharp), Faith Jellybones (Karen Sharp), AmoraBloodbath (Arlene Swarm), and Pantin’ Jack Cutty (Bob Swarm).[Ed Note – see next page for the rest of the fun everyone had out of Pirate uniform]Page 26

So if the tides are right you are actually a part of the Saturday marketwithout having to go up the ramp. The music was playing, the produce was picked and ripe forpurchase, flowers were abloom just waiting to be relocated onto the back of any yacht in theharbor. It was also time for some cribbage and card games for those wanting to participate.Saturday evening everyone got the night off from cooking and over 65 attendees enjoyed “BigMeats” home smoked pulled-pork sandwiches, coleslaw and chips. If you didn’t make it thereal way (with coleslaw on top of the pulled pork) then we encourage you to try it next timeyou have the opportunity. Terry had to talk me into it and I will never go back (that is thepulled pork sandwich I am referring to). We got to meet a new member “Mary” who attendeda class that morning and came down to the dock to see what it was all about. Our instructorsmust be portraying what a fun group we are!Sunday morning was the Hales turn to get up early and prep the coffee for the potluckbreakfast. Everything came together and there were some delicious breakfast casseroles, fruit, and breads to enjoy. A few boats had to leave to make the short journey south but many of uswere able to languor in the sun capitalizing on the fact that we didn’t have far to go.[Ed. The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012POVERTY BAY PROVIDES SAFETY for SOUND ROWERSBy P/C Bob Miller, SNPictures by Sound RowersThis was our fifth year assisting the intrepid Sound Rowers, the organization of open water rowers andpaddlers. We met this year at Brownsville Marina Friday, July 13 afternoon & evening before the race toplan the following day. We had slips reserved for us on the breakwater pier. Friday’s potluck dinnerconsisted of giant hot dogs, corn on the cob, baked beans, salad followed by dessert. We aroseSaturday, July 14 morning, had breakfast and headed for the race course. The race is normally overabout 1230 when the last boat finishes. However this year there were several race delays due to the fogand potential for thunder storms. We ultimately assisted in moving the course to a shorter one leadingfrom Manchester State Park along the western shore and back. Dave and Karen Sharp placed C# as aturning mark for them so they knew when to turn around. All things considered, it was a successful dayin spite of the weather problems. We were all headed for our home ports by about 1330.The Poverty Bay participating vessels were:Vessel Captain CrewBianca Don Parker Donna ParkerFlamingo Roger Hunt Gloria HuntOur Brigadoon Bob Miller Rick MillerC# Dave Sharp Karin SharpWater Skipper Terry Smith Jackie SmithSeahawk Rod McGillivray Mike McGillivrayWe planned to have one boat from Bremerton squadron, Irish Mist, owned and operated by BobShepherd. Regrettably however, Irish Mist experienced a significant engine water leak forcing Bob toreturn to Gig Harbor and not allowing them to participate.Page 31

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012RoadwaysBy John MasefieldOne road leads to London,One road leads to Wales,My road leads me seawardsTo the white dipping sails. One road leads to the river,And it goes singing slow;My road leads to shipping,Where the bronzed sailors go.Leads me, lures me, calls meTo salt green tossing sea;A road without earth’s roaddustIs the right road for me.A wet road heaving, shining,And wild with seagull’s cries,A mad salt sea-wind blowingThe salt spray in my eyes.My road calls me, lures meWest, east, south, and north; Most roads lead menhomewards,My road leads me forth. To add more miles to the tallyOf grey miles left behind,In quest of that one beautyGod put me here to find. Not many videos of this put to music. The first2:20 of the nearly 5 minute video is thisparticular poem. Hope you like it. Here’s thelink:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDB6GTvgj78Page 33

The Pirates Log Poverty Bay Sail and Power Squadron Summer 2012UNSUNG HEROES of the POWER SQUADRONBy Lt. Marc Nelson, APEach month we highlight a non-bridge position that is often taken for granted. In this month’sinstallment, we salute:At this time of the year, as summer is about to give way to autumn, it is appropriate torecognize and thank our many USPS Certified Instructors. While most of us are stillenjoying the remainder of our Summer boating, vacations, and various other forms ofrecreation, our Instructors are busy preparing themselves and their materials for all theclasses in our 2012/2013 Educational Calendar (see page 17). Not only do we have the topWashington State Educator in our Squadron, but a number of very good Instructors who givefreely of their time in order to teach us the finer points of a wide range of subjects.Instructors practice, practice, practice their presentations each week of class and before theyeven walk through the door for the first day/evening of class. They have to be excellent timemanagers having to balance the eagerness of students to share their boating stories with thelimited time to deliver a great deal of new information in a fixed amount of time. Instructorsalso proctor all in-class tests, grade and score ABC tests as well. They must know theirmaterial so well in order to prepare their students to successfully pass the exam at the end ofclass. They arrange in advance to have sufficient books and materials on hand for day one ofclass as well. These unpaid volunteers give of their time to impart boating knowledge and wisdom tomembers and non-members alike. They spend precious time, that most valuable commodity, away from spouses to help USPS meet its lofty educational goals. As if all that isn’t enough, every four years these educators must themselves brush up on theirskills and be recertified as an official USPS Certified Instructor. So next time you take one ofour many excellent classes, thank your Instructor! And when you hear of another classsuccessfully passing their final exam, give kudos to the Instructors! They deserve it!Page 38
