buildings are the 13th-century St Peter and<br />

Paul’s Church built of axed logs, the 19thcentury<br />

belfry, and the 19th-century estate<br />

homestead buildings. The park contains three<br />

trees that have been acknowledged as natural<br />

monuments: the thickest ash in <strong>Lithuania</strong>,<br />

known as Witch’s Ash, an elm and a linden<br />

tree. The Plateliai estate barn houses a permanent<br />

exhibition of Shrove Tuesday masks and<br />

a collection of archaeological findings. Having<br />

descended to the area by the lake, first go to<br />

the observation platform. To the left lies the<br />

4.1 km long Šeirė nature trail. You will see the<br />

forest of Šeirė, the swamp of Gaudupys (Šeirė),<br />

Piktežeris, and unique and rare species of plants,<br />

mushrooms and animals.<br />

Close to Beržoras Lake you will find an old<br />

street village of Beržoras. There are 14 chapels –<br />

calvary stations and the expressive and elegant<br />

Church of Beržoras.<br />

The former stone water mill of Babrungėnai,<br />

built in 1816, you will meet a cheerful Samogitian<br />

artist Leonardas Černiauskas who<br />

has established an art gallery-workshop which<br />

houses a permanent exhibition of his painting<br />

and wood creations and a collection of ancient<br />

articles.<br />

Leaving Babrungėnai go back a little and<br />

turn right to Plokštinė. For about 7 kilometres<br />

the road goes through thick forests. The natural<br />

reserve of Plokštinė covers the eastern part of<br />

Plokštinė forest with the scenic swamplands of<br />

Juodupis and Uošna, swift springs and streams.<br />

Riding by the educational route of Paplatelė<br />

(2.3 km long) you will see the Sultekis (Minija)<br />

In the Samogitian National Park camping is allowed<br />

only in certain camp sites which are marked.<br />

From Paežerės Rudaičiai to Užpelkiai ride<br />

4 kilometres along the coast of Plateliai lake.<br />

Visit the thelmological reserve of Pakastuva<br />

in which you will be able to observe the rare<br />

species of birds from the observation tower.<br />

In addition, enjoy the Samogitian landscape<br />

views from the top of Užpelkiai Mound.
