Enclosed you will find the guidelines for nomination and forms tonominate eligible bulls and heifers for the sale event. The sale event will be held on Friday,November 9, 2012 at 11:00 am at the <strong>Alabama</strong> Livestock Auction in Uniontown, <strong>Alabama</strong>.A new requirement for this year’s sale will be that all bulls declared as non-virgin will berequired to have a negative test for Trichomoniasis within 30 days of the sale date by officialculture and PCR tests or 3 official cultures taken 1 week apart and tested by an accreditedlaboratory. Also, in accordance with new regulations required by the <strong>Alabama</strong> Department ofAgriculture and Industries, all out-of-state consignments of bulls 18 months of age and older,regardless of breeding status, will be required to have a negative Trichomoniasis test by officialculture and PCR tests performed by an accredited laboratory within 30 days prior to entry into<strong>Alabama</strong>.Please also review the enclosed birth date and weight chart to find the minimum delivery weightof bulls by birth date. This chart will allow you to monitor your bull’s growth to insure meeting thedelivery weight requirements for the sale and avoiding rejection. Please also take note, adjustedyearling weights are highly recommended to be reported for publication in the catalog for 16 month to 2year old bulls. For the 2012 sale, this will include bulls born from August 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011.Documentation of a semen evaluation and scrotal measurements, either by the <strong>BCIA</strong> BSE Form or theSociety for Theriogenology form, must be presented when bulls are delivered to the sale site.<strong>BCIA</strong> will again offer the <strong>BCIA</strong> Genetic Verified Commercial Heifer Sale as part of this event.This sale will target open and bred heifers, calving from January 1 to June 15, 2013, with geneticdocumentation, group age, and source information. A complete list of nomination guidelines and formsare included in this packet. The <strong>BCIA</strong> Genetic Verified Commercial Heifer Sale will provide <strong>Alabama</strong>cattle producers an avenue to expand their marketing of replacement heifers with genetic verification. Itis another opportunity offered by <strong>BCIA</strong> to expand their mission of serving the state beef cattle industry.The nomination deadline for this sale is August 15, 2012. Consignors must be an active <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>BCIA</strong>member.2. All bulls must be registered with a recognized breedassociation & have EPDs for birth, weaning,maternal & yearling. All bulls must have aminimum adjusted weaning weight of 525 lbs fornomination. Birth & weaning weights arerequired to be reported at nomination to meetminimum weights. **NOTE, adjusted yearlingweights are highly recommended to bereported.**3. Age Range- November 1, 2008 through May 31,20114. Bulls born between 8/1/10-5/31/11 must have a WDA of2 lbs. All others must weigh at least 1,700 lbs. A 5%shrink will be allowed for delivery weight requirement &for published sale weight as bulls are weighed. Bulls notmeeting the delivery weight requirements will berejected from the sale at sale delivery whenweights are taken & calculated.5. The deadline to consign bulls to this sale is AUGUST 15,2012. The $100 entry fee per bull is due with nomination,payable to <strong>AL</strong> <strong>BCIA</strong>. It will be refunded provided thebull arrives at the sale & is sold. The sale cost includes:4% of the announced selling price, 1% auctioneer fee,fixed cost of catalog, transfer fees, <strong>Beef</strong> Promotion & aprorated charge for all other cost to include advertising,labor, and barn rent.8. Each out of state bull, on delivery, must have a currentvalid interstate health certificate (with lot number andtattoo) indicating freedom from Trichomoniasis forall bulls older than 18 months of age & brucellosis.Out of state bulls from a certified & accredited herd stillrequire an interstate health certificate. In order to complywith state and federal laws currently in effect regardingtrichomoniasis, tuberculosis, brucellosis, and interstateshipment of breeding cattle, you should consult yourveterinarian and discuss this matter.9. A minimum scrotal circumference of 32 cm isrequired for all bulls selling. The consignor isresponsible for having each bull’s semen evaluatedwithin 60 days prior to delivery. Documentationeither by the <strong>BCIA</strong> BSE Form or the Society forTheriogenology form of the semen evaluation &scrotal measurements must be presented whenbulls are unloaded at sale site, if the bulls are tobe sold in this sale.10. All bulls declared as Non-virgin will be requiredto have a negative Trichomoniasis test within 30days of the sale date by official culture and PCRtests or 3 official culture samples taken 1 weekapart from an accredited laboratory.11. The consignor guarantees every bull selling to be abreeder, for a period of six months following sale date.12. Sale order will be determined by EPD percentiles foreach bull within breed for calving ease or birth,weaning, yearling, and milk . The within breed EPDindex will be calculated using an individual bull’s EPD &referencing the corresponding percentile for the listed 4traits with the formula:EPD Index=100-(CE/BW+WW+YW+Milk)/4.Breed rotation will be determined by the number ofeach breed represented. Sale management has theright to alter sale order if deemed in the best interestof the sale. For example, bulls with low WDA aresubject to movement in the sale order.13. Bulls should arrive at the <strong>AL</strong> Livestock Auctionin Uniontown, <strong>AL</strong> on Thursday, November 8,2012 between 8 AM & 3 PM. <strong>BCIA</strong> Genetic Verified Commercial Heifer SaleSource, Age, and Genetic Verified1. Consignors must be an active member of <strong>Alabama</strong> <strong>BCIA</strong>.2. Heifers must be sired by a properly registered bull that is transferred to the owner of theheifers. The registration number of the bull or bulls must be provided at consignment tothe sale.a. For AI sires, a receipt from the purchase of the semen and the registration # of thesire is required. If semen resulted from collection of a bull owned by theconsignor, proof of semen collection of the bull is required.b. For a leased herd sire, a statement for the owner of the bull including the dates oflease and the registration # of the bull is required.c. Heifer calves resulting from the purchase of bred heifers will require a statementfrom the original owner or breeder of the bred heifer that will include the servicesires registration #, breeding dates, and proof of sale to the consignor.3. Heifers must be born on the farm of origin.4. Group age must be documented (age of the oldest and youngest heifer in the sale groupmust be provided.) Groups of heifers are encouraged for consignment, but singles are notexcluded.5. Minimum WDA of 1.5 lbs required at sale delivery and will be calculated on pen averagewith no pen of heifers having over a 90 day age span.6. Vaccinations recommended will be the following: (all vaccinations must be administeredat least 3 weeks before sale delivery)a. 7-way Blackleg (Clostridial diseases)b. 5-way Leptospirosisc. IBR-PI3-BVD-BRSVd. Heifers must be treated for internal and external parasites prior to the sale.The above vaccines should be given twice (a primary and booster) in accordance withBQA guidelines. Either Program A: Primary vaccination 3-4 weeks before weaningand a Booster vaccination at weaning or Program B: Primary vaccination at weaningand a Booster vaccination prior to the sale.7. Heifers must be weaned at least 30 days prior to delivery for the sale.8. Heifers must have never been implanted with any growth stimulant.9. Open heifers will be guaranteed to be open. If any open heifers sold are found to be bred,it will be the responsibility of the buyer to notify the breeder at the first sign ofpregnancy, so that the heifer can be returned to the breeder. The breeder will onlyconsider refunding the purchase price of the heifers if they are in good condition andreturned prior to calving.10. Open heifers purchased in this sale or other <strong>BCIA</strong> Heifer Sales may be consigned to thissale as bred heifers the following year, per meeting the requirements for bred heifers.Additional Requirements for Bred Heifers:1. Bred heifers will be guaranteed bred (at a minimum of 60 days) at sale time withdocumentation from a veterinarian at delivery.2. A breeding date or date range and the resulting projected calving date range will berequired for each bred heifer. The specific breeding and calving date range will be set forPage 1 of 2


each sale date. For the November 2012 sale, bred heifers should calve after January 1 toJune 15, 2013 with breeding dates of March 22 to September 1, 2012.3. A properly registered service sire that is transferred to the owner of the heifers and theregistration number of the sire (or sires) of the bred heifer(s) must be provided atconsignment to the sale. For a leased service sire, a statement for the owner of the bullincluding the dates of lease and the registration # of the bull is required. Low birthweight, calving ease service sires are highly recommended.4. A minimum average weight of 850 lbs. is required at delivery for all bred heifers. Thisaverage weight will be collected on all the bred heifer consignments by each consignor. Sale(s) are invited to be held in conjunction with existing <strong>BCIA</strong> bull sales. The respectivebull sale committees may add additional requirements but may not remove any of theserespective guidelines; however, the bull sale committees may omit the addition of bredheifers to fit their sales and sale dates. Sale will have a 2% commission for <strong>BCIA</strong>. The total commission will be 5%, which willalso include 1% for auctioneer expenses and 2% for sales expenses.
