March 11–September 30, 2012Alix Aymé:European Perception and Asian PoeticismThis is the first museum exhibition devoted to the career ofAlix Aymé (French, 1894–1989), an influential participant inthe promotion of Paris-born modernism in the era betweenthe world wars. The exhibition presents an unparalleledopportunity to study the artist’s development over nearly fourdecades, from her early works under the tutelage of FrenchNabi painter Maurice Denis, to her mature compositionsof sensual portraits and haunting landscapes that fusedtraditional Asian styles with the spirit of Western modernism.Bringing together nearly forty works from public and privatecollections, the exhibition includes never-before-exhibitedpaintings, drawings, lacquer panels, and book illustrationschronicling a career that was much inspired by the artist’sover twenty years in Indochina. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue, made possible through the generosity of Doris W. Tippens.March 11–May 27, 2012Lullaby in EvergreenSite-Specific Paper Installationby Tai Hwa GohTai Hwa Goh is a Korean-born printmaker and paperartist living in the New Jersey Palisades. As Evergreen’stenth artist-in-residence, she will transform themansion’s grand main staircase onto a three-dimensionalsculpture using enlarged, cut, and reworked hand waxedprints inspired by the museum and library collections. The installation forges a physical relationship with thearchitectural space and surfaces, inviting viewers toengage with and consider the materiality of prints. Markedby the artist’s interest in contrasting the fragility of workson paper with concrete architectural elements, the workinvites multiple interpretations and questions the conceptof print reproduction. The exhibition is guest curated by Baltimore-based artist andcollector Cathy Barbehenn.Left: Alix Aymé, Portrait d’uneAfricaine (detail), 1962.
