Knownfor its agriculture, Johns Island is home to a host of wildlife thatincludes deer, coyotes, eagles and alligators. <strong>The</strong> rivers andmarshes are abundant with fish and shellfish while tractorslumber along the two-lane roads that wind through the island. Yetbelying the tranquility of the 84-square-mile island is economichardship—more than 17 percent of the island’s 17,000inhabitants live below the national poverty level.30
