10 Brian Porter-Szűcs Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Professor of History College of Literature, Science, and the Arts Professor Porter-Szűcs is described by colleagues as “one of the history department’s most committed, conscientious, innovative, and successful teachers.” Students and faculty alike praise him for his dedication to students and his efforts to improve the department’s undergraduate program. Over the last 15 years, Professor Porter-Szűcs has taught the department’s introductory survey courses and designed several courses within his areas of expertise, including the history of Poland and the history of Catholicism. He has been a pioneer in the use of technology in the classroom and has served as a mentor to colleagues who also wish to incorporate new media, blogs, and student response systems into their courses. Known for his exemplary teaching throughout the department, Professor Porter-Szűcs was asked to chair the Undergraduate Curriculum Working Group last winter to revamp the undergraduate history program. Under his leadership, the group developed a new advising system, created a searchable course that identifies thematic clusters for undergraduate study, and designed two new introductory courses in response to student feedback. While each of these curricular innovations has dramatically improved undergraduate education within the department, Professor Porter-Szűcs’ most significant legacy may be his individual interactions with students. Former students provide countless examples of the ways in which he supported their intellectual curiosity and extended himself for their benefit. “Even as his undergraduate advisee, a 20-year old novice, I always felt like he was invested in me, that I had something to contribute, and that my career was something we would build together.” Steven J. Skerlos Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering College of Engineering For the past decade, Professor Skerlos has dedicated time, energy, and creativity to undergraduate learning both within and outside the classroom. Under his leadership, the capstone design course in mechanical engineering has consistently received the highest student ratings of any required course within the department. According to a student who took the course, “Dr. Skerlos exhibited a remarkable ability to connect with the students and to cater his communication and teaching style to each of us.” Despite the incredible effort required to organize and implement such a course, Professor Skerlos sought out additional opportunities to improve undergraduate education. He co-developed the nine-credit undergraduate program in sustainable engineering in order to expose students to the principles of sustainable design. He also co-created the undergraduate minor in multidisciplinary design, which awards credit to students engaged in design projects across the college. In 2008, Professor Skerlos co-founded the BLUElab, a large, student-run organization whose mission is to find sustainable solutions to challenging development problems locally and abroad. BLUElab has attracted over 800 students from all engineering fields and has been particularly popular among female students. Professor Skerlos also routinely mentors undergraduate students through the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, working with over 20 students to date. His significant impact on students is best expressed by this comment from a colleague: “There are very few professors who have been as broadly and deeply involved with undergraduate students as Professor Skerlos; as an instructor, a mentor, and a leader in education.”
