4 Honors Convocation Speakers Yourui Yeo Junior, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts Yourui Yeo, who came to the University of Michigan as a transfer student from Malacca, Malaysia, is a junior with a double major in economics and organizational studies and a minor in German in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Fluent in English, German, Malay, and Mandarin, she facilitates international understanding through her academic and extracurricular activities. Last summer, she interned in Bonn, Germany, where she helped promote German and U.S. intern exchanges. She also contributes to leadership programs for international audiences as a research assistant with the LEAD Research Group at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. Among the honors she has received are scholarships for tuition from Shell Malaysia and for room and board from the Telluride Association. She directed the popular Malaysian Cultural Night ’12, teaches English to Chinese senior citizens, and is passionate about Argentine tango. Following graduation, she plans to gain experience in the consulting industry and eventually join an international nonprofit. Barry G. Rabe Arthur F. Ford School of Public Policy Professor of the Environment, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts Professor of Political Science, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts Professor of Environmental Policy, School of Natural Resources and Environment Professor Rabe, a member of the University of Michigan faculty since 1985, was named a Thurnau Professor in 2011 in recognition of his teaching excellence and commitment to enhancing undergraduate academic opportunities. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Carthage College and his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Chicago. Professor Rabe played a central role in the 2002 development of the Program in the Environment, one of the University’s fastest growing undergraduate programs, and served as its director. He is a non-resident senior fellow in the Governance Studies Program at the Brookings Institution and a fellow at the National Academy of Public Administration. He currently is researching energy development and taxation policies in the United States and Canada. In July, he will become the director of the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy at the Ford School. In 2006, Professor Rabe became the first social scientist to receive the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Protection Award, which recognized his contributions to scholarship and policymaking. He has received three research awards from the American Political Science Association, including the 2007 Daniel Elazar Award for Career Contributions to the Study of Federalism. He has received outstanding teaching awards from the School of Public Health, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, and the Program in the Environment. Through his teaching and scholarship, Professor Rabe inspires students, policymakers, and the public to think critically about the role of public policy in environmental protection.
Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, and Churchill Scholarships Rhodes Scholarships and Marshall Scholarships are among the world’s most prestigious academic awards for graduate students. Since the estate of British philanthropist Cecil John Rhodes established Rhodes Scholarships in 1904, 26 University of Michigan alumni have studied as Rhodes Scholars at Oxford University. Thirty-two Americans are named Rhodes Scholars each year. International students may apply to or be nominated by 13 other jurisdictions designated by the Rhodes Trust. Marshall Scholarships, founded by an Act of Parliament in 1953, finance opportunities for young American scholars of high ability to study in the United Kingdom. The scholarship commemorates the humane ideals of the European Recovery Program (Marshall Plan) and funds one or two years of study. At least 40 Marshall Scholarships are awarded annually to American students who demonstrate maturity, self-reliance, and self- discipline. Alex Carney, who has won a Marshall Scholarship for study at Oxford and Cambridge starting next fall, will be the University of Michigan’s fifteenth Marshall Scholar. In 1999, the George J. Mitchell Scholarships were established for American university students. This third competitive national scholarship program, supported by the Irish and British governments and other benefactors, honors former Senator George J. Mitchell for his contributions to the Northern Ireland peace process. The prestigious award allows Americans to pursue one year of post-graduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland. Up to 12 George J. Mitchell Scholarships are awarded annually to students who have shown both academic distinction and the potential for leadership. The Churchill Scholarship provides high-achieving U.S. citizens with funding for a single year of graduate work in math, science, or engineering at Churchill College, Cambridge. Only about 14 scholarships are awarded annually.
