Again, please remember to label EVERYTHING!Here’s a list of items to label: shoes, socks, clothes, coats/jackets, hats, gloves,umbrellas, backpacks, lunch boxes, drink cups, food containers, ice packs, etc.Potty TrainingAll three year olds MUST be potty trained by the first day of school. We know thataccidents can occur occasionally. The teachers will assist your child in changing intoclean clothes if there is an accident. Please be sure to send a change of clothes, in casethis happens. If a three year old continues to have accidents, we may ask that thepreschooler stays home until the accidents are under control.The two year old teachers will work with the parents when potty training. If you arepotty training your two year old, please make your child’s teachers aware. Be sure to letthem know what techniques you are using at home, so that the teachers can reinforcethem at school. Potty Training is a HUGE developmental milestone. We want to helpmake it as smooth of a process as possible.Volunteer OpportunitiesParents are always welcome at the Harris Preschool Academy. We encourage you to helpor visit your child’s classroom at any time. We do have an open-door policy: howeverplease make sure that your child’s teacher is aware of your intention to help or to visit inorder to maximize your involvement with the class. Parents are strongly encouraged tosign up with their child’s teacher so that they can participate in regularly scheduledvolunteer opportunities (“Mystery Reader,” crafts, cooking etc). If you would like tobecome an on-going volunteer, please contact your child’s teacher or the coordinator.The Harris Parent Committee is a group of parents that work with the PreschoolCoordinator, teachers and other parents to coordinate various volunteer opportunities inand out of the classroom. This committee will work with room parents to plan classparties, organize staff appreciation activities, schedule “after hour” preschool functionsand communicate with preschool parents when new volunteer opportunities arise.Newsletters and Messages from SchoolYour child’s red tote bag and daily communication folder will be used to transportpapers, newsletters, messages, crafts and clothes. Please check your child’s tote bagafter school each day to insure that you don’t miss any important news. If you need tocommunicate with your child’s teacher or the director, please put any notes in yourchild’s red bag OR you can email us at harrispreschool@ymcacharlotte.org.Your child’s teacher will send home a weekly “newsletter”. This letter will correspondwhat was accomplished that week, as well as, what exciting things are coming. Therewill also be a monthly Harris Preschool Academy newsletter. This newsletter will keepparents abreast of all the wonderful happenings at our preschool.EmergenciesOur preschool staff will treat routine cuts, scrapes and bumps. In the case of seriousillness or an accident involving your child, we will contact you immediately. In the eventthat you cannot be reached, your signed authorization waiver (which you completed at12
egistration) allows us to secure prompt treatment. Please be aware that in the case ofa life-threatening emergency, 911 will be called first.School CalendarThe Harris Preschool Academy will (for the most part) follow that Charlotte-MecklenburgSchool system’s calendar. Our first day of school is: Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Ourlast day of school is: Wednesday, May 23, 2012.Please see the attached school calendar to see all the important dates.Wellness PolicyIf your child develops symptoms of illness during their stay, parents will be notified andwill need to pick up their child immediately. Children who have the followingsymptoms should remain at home until they are symptom free for 24 hoursunless a written note from the child’s physician is given, stating that theirsymptoms are not contagious.Some symptoms include: Continuous or colored nasal drainage (more than 3 wipes),Coughing, Fever, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Sore Throat, Skin Rash, Open Sores, Pink Eye,Active Head Lice, etc.If a parent cannot be reached, the staff will call an emergency number listed onthe child’s health form.Please be considerate of the students and teachers in the classroom and do not sendyour child to school sick. If an illness such as Head Lice, Fifth Disease or Chicken Poxhas been reported to us, the preschool will send written notices home with fellowstudents so that parents can be alert for symptoms. Please note that due to liabilityreasons, YMCA staff cannot dispense medicine of any kind (including sunscreen).AbsencesShould your child be out sick, due to illness, vacation or emergency, your child’s teacherwould like to know, in advance. While this of course is not required, our teachers do getconcerned when a child is out, especially for an extended amount of time. You can reachthem at the Academy office: (704) 716-6851 or harrispreschool@ymcacharlotte.org.Inclement WeatherAs with the school calendar, the Harris Preschool Academy also follows the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system’s inclement weather/snow schedule. In other words, if CMS.is closed, then our Preschool Academy is closed too. If CMS should have a delayedopening, preschool will open 1 hour late. Should you ever have any additional questions,please call the Harris Member Service Desk at (704) 716-6800, the Inclement WeatherHotline (704) 716 6867 or the Harris Preschool Academy (if staff are on-site) at (704)716-6851. The director will make every effort to send an email to inform parents ofschool closings or delayed openings.Please note: Due to other programs that must share our space, the Harris PreschoolAcademy cannot make up school days missed due to inclement weather even if CMS hasscheduled a make up day.13
