Thestaff also included a chemicalspecialist and a landscapearthilecl.The crews roll back the turfbefore football games on ahuge roller, and they constant·Iy replace sod on the footballr1eld. They build and maintainsprinkler systems, sidewalks,benches and bike racks. Theywere also resp::msible for snowremoval and winter walkmaintenance. They made thegabions, big rock·filled wirebaskets, that hold back thewalls <strong>of</strong> the new road being cutinto the slopes around the KibbieDome.The Campus WalkwaySystem is still just a planbecause <strong>of</strong> budget cuts, but forthe landscape architect, JoriAdkins, the Zo.root-wkle Domeroad was a plan come to life.She waa also In'terested In thelong-term development <strong>of</strong> theTheater Arts Center, whosefirst completed project was theHartung Thealer,Plans called for a 3{)()().seatauditorium on the hillside sile,but the landscape architecthad to work on smaller projects.The new AgriculturalSCience Building was landscapedand parking lots wereneeded, The publlcly.vlsiblelandscaped lawns andnowerbeds were from Adkins'broader view, minor details,Nadine Olmstead's job wasnowers. She raised them fromseeds and cuttings in t"'o smallgreenhouses at the Groundshop.Except for the SUB,which had ils own gardener,she designed, planted andtended e\'ery nowerbed oncampus.SCience is literally down toearth for her.
