Thisyear we almost had theGreg Kihn Band andthe Beach Boys!Obviously, thePalouse isn't the placewhere every performerdreams of pcrformingandWashington StateUniversity's BeasleyColiseum isn't CarnegieHall, but foiled at·tempts to gel big.namegroups has frayed thenerves of the ASVI ProgramsCommittee andthe WSU ColiseumEvents Group.Admittedly, thecancellation of theBeach Boys concert inSeptember was notreally their fault sincethey never actuallyconnrmOO they woulddo the show.The Beach Boys justhappened to be surfingthrough I)uyallup,Wash and the ASUIPrograms Committeetried to snag themalong the way.The Argonaut pickedup the st0l)' right awayand almost let the cam·pus know abollt theconcert befol'e the per·formers did, but thestory was so full of"tentatives" and "proposeds"it would havemade any lawyerproud.Besides, it was arough year for theBeach Boys. JamesWatt wouldn't let themacross the White Housethreshhold and shortlyafter Christmas theylost their drummer,Dennis Wilson, in aswimming accident.Things didn't gosmoothly for GregKihn, lead vocalist andrhy1hm guitarist of theGreg Kihn Band, either.Kihn was scheduledto do the October 22Homecoming concert,preceded by Stevie RayVaughan and Rai/.However, Kihndiscontinued his tourbecause of healthreasons. Supposedlyhis doctor advised thathe cut down on hisstage appearances tosave his voice.So Rail, a winner inM-TV's "BasementTapes" contest, tookthe spotlight forhomecoming. Rail alsoperfol'med befOl'C 2000fans in the VI StudentUnion Building inApril, 19&3, for the"A'liller Rock Series."So, maybe the performersfelt worsethan we did aboutmissing their own concerts,but just think nexl year maybe we'llalmost get DuranDuran or Culture Club.Regardless of thecancellations, theuniversity did get alarge breadth of enter·tainment, from screento stage. Like the menuin a great restaurant, UIentertainment cateredto all tastes.The Campus BashSeptember 10 was heldbefOl'C the Vandal v.Southern Coloradogame.
