Description and examplesThe inductive analog sensor is suitable for non<strong>contacting</strong>measuring <strong>of</strong> <strong>distance</strong> or positionreferred to metals. The measuring principle isbased on the physical effect <strong>of</strong> change <strong>of</strong> quality<strong>of</strong> a resonant circuit which is due to eddy currentlosses in conductive material.The high-frequency pulsating field <strong>of</strong> a LCresonant circuit leaves at the active surface <strong>of</strong> thesensor and is periodically excited by a pulsestage. As soon as electrically conductive materialenters the field eddy currents result. Energy istaken from the resonant circuit, and its amplitudeand decay time are influenced proportionally tothe object <strong>distance</strong>. A µ-processor serves forintegration <strong>of</strong> the energy <strong>of</strong> the resonant circuitand determines the resulting output signal.The electro-magnetic field is non-interacting, i. e. itdoes not produce any heating in the object to bemeasured nor does it have magnetic influence.Acc. to function measuring is carried out referringto moved or stationary metals. For fast processes ithas to be considered that the periodically excitedresonant circuit reaches a measuring rate between100 and 250 per second.The robust design in potted housing and easyhandling make possible industrial standardsolutions as well as sophisticated applications.By means <strong>of</strong> two incorporated push-buttonsmeasuring range and individual curve shapescan be programmed. During this procedure the electro-magneticalternating field <strong>of</strong> a sensor induces eddy currents intothe surface the metallic object to be measured. Thetransmission <strong>of</strong> energy changes the vibrationbehaviour <strong>of</strong> the oscillator and is evaluated by theelectronic control unit. By means <strong>of</strong> a specialmodulation procedure the max. possible measuringrange is achieved. <strong>Sensors</strong> with measuring rangesbetween 0 to 5 and 0 to 150 mm are available.Practically accuracy’s between 1-2/10 mm can bereached because <strong>of</strong> inhomogeneity <strong>of</strong> the objectmaterial regarding alloy and hardness. If veryhomogenous material is used, accuracy’s upto 1/100mm are possible as well.The mobile measuring station MSZ 002 is suitable foroperation with 1 or 2 sensors. The internal battery iscapable <strong>of</strong> providing 12 hours operation.The movable measuring skid MAZ 002 fitted with 2sensors is moved through the strand guide <strong>of</strong> acontinuos casting plant. Each sensor detects the<strong>distance</strong> to the rolls in passing. The MSZ computerdetermines and stores the min. gaps between the rolls.The internal display always shows the last three gapvalues. It is possible to store up to 2048 gaps in theintegrated Flash-ROM (permanent) and to read them atany time. Communication with the PC is effected via aRS232 interface.Thanks to the menu-guided operation the roll gapsensor can be applied comfortably and adjusted to theapplication in question. The MSZ 002 can beconfigured to operate in German, English and Spanish.The measuring skid MAZ 002 consists <strong>of</strong> two sensorsarranged axially in opposite measuring direction. The Ato D converter continuously produces the measuringvalues for both sensors which are transmitted to themobile measuring station via a RS485 interface and aconnection cable.Measuring accuracy and linearity are influenced byshape and material <strong>of</strong> the measuring objects. Thesystem is delivered configured to measure rolls 150mm diameter made from X20C13. In case <strong>of</strong>considerable deviations from this basic setting this setupcan be changed and stored in the PC.
