Meals On Wheels raises money through appraising
BY PAGE H. GIFFORD
CORRESPONDENT
Saturday (March 10)
marked the fi fth annual
Fluvanna Meals on
Wheels Antique Roadshow
fundraiser.
Participants walked
in to the show holding
boxes under their arms,
clutching antique dolls
close to them, or carrying
furniture.
“It’s been steady all
morning,” said Ann
Kirschnick, treasurer
for Fluvanna Meals on
Wheels.
The appraiser was
Sandra Perry, in-house
appraiser for Harlowe-
Powell Auction Gallery.
Bill Hutton listened intently
to Perry regarding
a child’s rocker that
had been handed down
to his father. Earlier Hutton
said he came by with two Tiffany glass blown vases. One
was worth between $4,000 to $5,000 and the other was worth
$3,000 to 4,000.
Perry knew her antiques. Speaking to another woman, who
brought in Hummel fi gurines, she stated that her Hummels were
circa 1960s-1970s and may be worth $50.
“The market has dropped from $200 to $50, the market is
soft for Hummels. They are not selling. Many people purchased
them for an investment. These Hummels were mass produced
by the thousands,” said Perry.
One odd and very unique item was an enormous black leather
chair but the frame was made out of a heavy ornate carved
wood.
“This looks as if it was made in the south Pacifi c and someone
may have brought it home on their tour-of-duty.” She estimated
its value between $75-$100.
A secretary in mint condition Perry estimated would sell for
$2-$3,000.
Emily McLain brought in a talking doll made in the mid to
late 1920s. Perry was intrigued by the doll and was spellbound
while she listened to her speak. Perry pointed out that the doll
would need some repair to restore her to perfect condition. In
her present condition, some doll collectors would pay between
$200-$300 but if she were restored to the original, she would
bring $500-$700.
McLain also had an unusual piece of an old military uniform
from the Franco-Prussian War. Apparently, an heirloom from
her family in Switzerland, it was a length of large linked chain
with two ornate carved discs on each end. It was apparently a
part of a belt holding a scabbard, dating back to 1870. Perry estimated
it was worth between $700-$1,000.
Other items valued included a silver pocket fl ask for $500-700
and an old Sessions clock (Sessions Clock Co.) made between
1870-1900. Perry estimated in today’s market it would bring
$100-$200.
One man found an early antique sniper rifl e worth $500-700.
As always, some were delighted with their appraisal, others
walked away disappointed but manyl were surprised by what
they heard.
In February 2008 Fluvanna Meals on Wheels delivered its fi rst
meals after a year of organizing and fundraising. Today, it serves
75 clients and 25,000 meals each year.
The charity has 14 volunteers, who pack and deliver meals,
and drive the 200 miles days to serve six routes.
Most of their clients are referred from social services and
well below the poverty level and are not in a position to pay for
meals. These people range in age from 53 to 94 and are elderly,
disabled or homebound and have no means to obtain their daily
meals.
The food costs $1,350 weekly and $5,850 per month. The total
cost per year is a whopping $70,200 and this doesn’t cover
other related expenses including costs for food containers, offi
ce supplies or advertising for fund raising events. MOW is a
non-profi t organization which receives no federal, state or local
funding and must rely on donations and fund raising events like
this one, in order to continue to help their clients.
