Is it just achore to mow and rake, or is it trulyfunctional and attractive for you and thenatural world? The Green YardMakeover will introduce ecosystemlandscape gardening, a holistic approachto landscaping that incorporates spacefor yard as well as native habitat, raingardens, vegetable gardens, ediblelandscaping, and wild edges. The focusof the class will be on the eco-stripgarden, a simple, low-cost, flexiblemodel for combining rainwaterharvesting, native landscaping, andorganic gardening in a seamless designmeant for rural and urban homeowners.Do it all: learn how you can conservewater, restore native plants andpollinator and songbird habitat, andproduce your own food organically bycreating integrated eco-strip gardens offof your home’s downspouts. Thisstraightforward, modular garden can beimplemented all at once or over thecourse of several years; it can be usedfor every downspout or just one.Complement the eco-strip garden bycreating low-maintenance, native yardedges that can include food plantings aswell as wildlife habitat. Cut down onyour grass lawn and add beauty, naturalvalue, wildlife, and food to yourlandscape. We’ll show you how. Thiscourse serves as an overview andintroduction to the in-depth workshopsWater, Native Plants, Food, and Borders. If you register for all 5 workshops in theseries, your registration for The GreenYard Makeover is free.Course # ENV 2000.(1) $92/5 Thur. 6:30 - 8:30 pmGrinnell, Iowa Valley Grinnell LearningStudio 209Instr: Jim KesslerWater: Making It Work forYouWater is the basis for all animal andplant life and it shapes our landscapes.Recent droughts and floods have shownus that too much or too little water canresult in huge problems for us and ourcommunities. What can we do with thewater that falls on our houses and yardsso that it doesn’t flood our basementsbut we are still able to use it? Makefriends with water by learning how tochannel it away from your house, absorbit into the soil, and nourish native andfood plants. This class will cover how todetermine how much water is falling onyour roof, designing and installingphysical rain water catchment systemssuch as rain barrels for irrigation, andcreating a rain garden swale to channeland absorb excess rainwater. The raingarden swale forms the basis for the ecostripgarden, which also includes nativelandscaping and an organic food garden. The eco-strip garden goes beyond thetraditional rain garden by incorporatingelements of both native landscaping andorganic gardening. Thenon-native plants that dominate ourlandscape can’t nourish our nativewildlife, and we are seeing alarmingdeclines in our native insect, songbird, butterfly, and pollinator populations. Thekey is to bring native plants back to ourlandscapes. In the ecosystem landscapegarden, native plants serve multiplefunctions: water infiltration, pollination, wildlife habitat, and pest control.Building off of Water: Making It WorkFor You, this workshop will introduceyou to the diversity of plants native toour bioregion and how to incorporatethem into the rain garden swale as wellas the drier edges surrounding the swaleto create a varied native landscape.Focus will be on selecting the rightplanting method and type of plants foryour site and your location in Iowa toensure the success of your planting.Course # ENV 2002.(1) $183/5 Thur. 6:30 - 8:30 pmGrinnell, Iowa Valley Grinnell LargeConference Room & KitchenInstr: Jim KesslerEnvironment641-752-4645 Register online at www.IowaValley.com Page 21

Environment/Families & RelationshipsFood: Gardening With NatureThe backyard garden can produce a lotof food in a little space, but watering, weeds, and pests can take a toll on theorganic garden and the gardener. Usingthe eco-strip garden design as part of thegreen yard makeover, you will learn howto integrate your backyard garden into aseamless design with the rain gardenswale and rain barrel to collect and holdmoisture and the pollinator and butterflygarden to provide habitat for beneficialinsects. Native landscaping can beincorporated right into the vegetablegarden itself using the strip concept. Thepresence of beneficial insects will cutdown significantly on pest pressure, making organic gardening easier andmore rewarding. This integrated pestmanagement approach focuses on usingnative plants and beneficial insectpredators and parasites as a substitute forpesticides, including natural pesticides.Class will also cover mulching strategiesto cut down on weeds and composting tobuild soil using materials available inyour yard, helping to tie the whole greenyard concept together. In addition to theannual vegetable garden, we’ll touch onintegrating small perennials into theoverall plan.
