This letter describes features to beconsidered using the system parts.New product featuresThe SPORTident station BSx7 is based on a newly developed hardware core. The new designoffers a number of significant improvements and new features compared to the older series ofSPORTident stations. The new BSx7 station is still compatible with the already existingSPORTident system parts and can be used mixed with older equipment.• The BSx7 station is “always on” and works in a low power Standby mode. There is noneed to switch on the station or to make any special preparations before the unit can beused. Also in standby mode the station is fully qualified to proceed SPORTident cards. Themaximal wake up time is 1 sec but can be adjusted by the user. A faster wake up willincrease station’s power consumption. The station is switched from Standby mode toActive mode when the first SPORTident card is inserted.• Once the station is in Active Mode the reaction time to the insertion of subsequentSPORTident cards is very quick. After an adjustable period without a SPORTident cardbeing inserted, the station drops back to standby mode. As with earlier stations, ActiveMode can also be entered by setting a predefined switch on time using PC software(Competition mode).• The BSF7 station features with an on-board service display visible from the back side. Thedisplay shows quickly main stations settings like real time and code number. After a cardhas punched the card number is displayed too.•• From Standby Mode the station can also be switched to Servicemode. This is done by switching on the station with the “lilac offstick”. In Service Mode the station’s LCD display offers additionalinformation like station’s origin, battery consumption andfirmware version. Information about station’s battery is given bothby measuring the battery voltage and by computing the station’sbattery consumption in relation to the battery performance. ServiceMode is automatically terminated after 10 minutes or earlier if the“off stick” is used.

SPORTident BSF7 control stations, sw version 5.x• It was a special goal to develop a device which best meets the growing requirement toprotect our environment. The SPORTident Station BSx7 features with a very low powerconsumption. In typical application cycles a battery will serve for several years. Thisenables the use of a smaller battery. The battery is soldered to the printed circuit board andthis enables the SPORTident organisation to guarantee and control a fully certified disposalof empty batteries. For the first time an environmentally compatible lithium battery is used.This battery type does neither contain cadmium nor mercury. Other points of importanceare decreased use of plastic material as a result of the smaller volume and weight.• The station’s real time clock system is calibrated and temperature compensated. This offershigher accuracy also at very high and very low temperatures 1 . The internal time resolutionis approximately 4 ms.• The station’s backup memory is increased and is typically 8 times bigger than that of theBSF6 station.Handling and service• The BSF7 station only needs minimal services. In typical application cycles only thestations real time has to be controlled.• The station’s settings can be changed by using SIMAN 9.8. In the inductive couplingprocess between a SPORTident master station and a slaved station a coupling stick has tobe used.• To achieve highest synchronism in the stations real time clock it is recommended to adjuststations real time by using the TimeMaster (coupling stick needed). If SIMAN is usedinstead stations time has to be controlled using the on-board display.• The battery has a capacity of 2000 mAh. This value should not be changed.• The SPORTident stations 7 and 8 feature with an easy firmware upgrade mechanism. Thestations firmware can be uploaded by the user via simple inductive coupling. This featurekeeps the station up to date and enables the implementation of additional functionality. Toupgrade the firmware a master station BSM7 must be used. Information about firmwareversions and features are available on the SPORTident website.Limitations• In the station firmware the mode “clear without start number” is not supported any more.• SIMAN9.8 indicates a wrong power consumption value for the station. Please use theinformation shown at the stations display (service mode).• 1 The temperature compensation for the stations real time clock does not have fullperformance in SW 5.25. Improvements will come with later firmware versions.• After a change of the stations settings the first active mode is terminated after 10 minutes.Make a test punch after a station is reprogrammed and turn it off with the Off-stick.• Inductive coupling in the configuration SIMAN9.8, master station BSM3/4/6 and the BSF7is sensitive regarding the coupling distance.
