Lane ConstructionIn order to provide adequate drainage and permit winds to carry snow over the laneway, the lane surfacemusts be elevated with a gentle downward slope from the centre to each side of the lane. In addition, the laneshoulders must not slope at an angle greater than 45 degrees.That portion of the yard and lane through which the milk truck travels must be constructed so as to provideadequate drainage and prevent the buildup of mud.An example of the type of construction materials that could be used in constructing a lane or turnaroundarea is shown in Figure D. However, the amount of natural drainage will determine if more, or less, granularmaterial is needed compared to the amount shown in Figure D.Figure D Cross-Section of Lane or Turnaround AreaTopsoil“A” Crushed Gravel(15 cm/6 in)Sub-soil"B" Gravel (15 cm/6 in.)1. Ice and snow buildup should be takeninto consideration when determining branch and wire height.6. Lane BridgesThe corners on all bridges, culverts, and texas-style gates must be clearly identified. Blocked AccessCars, farm trucks, farm tractors and farm implements must not be parked in that portion of the yard and lanewhich is travelled by the milk truck in the process of picking up milk.8. Back to Table of Contents9. MaintenanceThe yard and lane must be kept in good repair. The transporter may refuse to pick up the milk if potholes andruts exist and/or the lane appears unsafe.In winter, that portion of the yard and the lane through which the milk truck travels must be clear of snowwhen the milk is scheduled to be picked up. The yard and lane must also be clearly marked with poles andreflecting markers.
