Forexample, if a player makes a taunting gesture to an opponent on the way to scoring a touchdown,the flag would nullify the score and the offending team will be penalized 15 yardsfrom the spot of the foul. Penalties for dead-ball misconduct (such as after theplayer crossesthe goal line) would continue to be assessed on the ensuing kickoff or PAT attempt. Alsonew is a 10-second rundown of the game clock if a team commits a foul that stops the clockin the final minute of either half. New blocking-below-the-waist standards will enhance playersafety. Also penalized will be a play in which three defensive players line up shoulder-toshoulderand move forward on place kicks.NATIONAL RANKINGS: As a team, <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> is tied for No. 1 in the NCAA’s <strong>Football</strong>Championship Subdivision in fourth-down conversions (2-for-2, 100 percent) and red zoneefficiency (6-for-6, 100 percent) and is 16th in punt returns (16.5 yards per return) and 27thin kickoff returns (23.92 average). Individually, senior cornerback Asa Jackson is 12th inpunt returns (16.50 average) while sophomore placekicker James Langford is tied for 16thin field goals per game (1.50).CONFERENCE LEADERS: Mustangs who are leaders in the Great West Conference in2011 include James Langford in PAT kicking percentage (5-for-5, 1.000), field goals pergame (1.5) and scoring (7.0 points per game) and Asa Jackson in punt returns (16.5 average).Senior fullback Jake Romanelli is No. 2 in rushing (66.5 yards per game) while seniorslotback Mark Rodgers is No. 2 in all-purpose yardage (143.0), linebacker KennithJackson is No. 2 in pass breakups (1.5 per game) and Max Schulz, also a linebacker, isNo. 2 in tackles for lost yardage (1.25 per game). As a team, <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> is No. 1 in the conferencein rushing offense (201.0 yards per game), field goal percentage (100 percent), PATkicking (100 percent), sacks allowed (1.5 per game), fourth-down conversions (2-for-2, 100percent) and red zone offense (6-for-6, 100 percent).AGAINST THE FBS: <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> has played two <strong>Football</strong> Bowl Subdivision schools in a seasonfive times in the last eight years. In 2002 <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> played two FBS (formerly Division I-A) opponentsin one season for the first time in school history (Toledo and Kent <strong>State</strong>), and did it againin 2003 (UTEP and Akron), 2006 (San Jose <strong>State</strong> and San Diego <strong>State</strong>), 2008 (San Diego<strong>State</strong> and Wisconsin) and 2009 (Ohio and San Jose <strong>State</strong>). <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> is 3-9 in its last 12 gamesagainst FBS schools, defeating UTEP 34-13 in the 2003 opener and San Diego <strong>State</strong> 16-14in 2006 and 30-28 in 2008. The Mustangs are 4-23 against FBS schools since 1980, includingthe Sept. 3 loss at San Diego <strong>State</strong>, and play at Northern Illinois on Sept. 24.OPPOSING MARKS: The Mustangs’ 2011 opponents are 9-13 two weeks into the season.<strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>’s 11 foes in 2010 were 56-56 for the year. The 2009 opponents were a combined71-59, with Montana (14-1) posting the best record. <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>’s 12 opponents in 2008 --including McNeese <strong>State</strong>, a game canceled due to Hurricane Ike -- were 68-60 for the seasonwith Montana at 14-2 leading the way and Weber <strong>State</strong> at 10-4. The Mustangs’ 2007foes posted a combined 52-70 record, with just two of 10 foes posting victories in the finalweek of the regular season (Western Oregon had a bye that week). Only Western Oregon(9-2), North <strong>Dakota</strong> <strong>State</strong> (10-1), Iona (7-4) and <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> <strong>State</strong> (7-4) had winningmarks. <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>’s 2006 foes were 60-60 for the 2006 season with six posting winningrecords, led by Montana at 12-2 and North <strong>Dakota</strong> <strong>State</strong> at 10-1. <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>'s 2005 foes werea combined 68-68 with seven schools enjoying winning seasons, led by Texas <strong>State</strong> (11-3).A SACK JOB: <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>'s defense recorded a school-record 50 sacks in 11 games in 2004and broke the mark again in 2005 with 62 sacks in 13 games. Meanwhile, the Mustangoffense protected its quarterbacks well, surrendering just 11 sacks in 2004 and 15 in 2005.The 2006 squad allowed just 11 sacks and the 2007 team allowed only 15 sacks (27th inthe nation) but notched just 21 on defense; the zero sacks at Texas <strong>State</strong> marked the firsttime in 43 games the Mustangs did not have a sack in a game. in 2008, the Mustangdefense notched 37 sacks -- No. 2 in the nation -- while the offensive line allowed nine. In2009, <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> recorded 17 sacks (six against Dixie <strong>State</strong> and five against <strong>South</strong>ern Utah)and allowed 17. Last fall, the Mustangs allowed just 10 sacks (16th in the nation) whilenotching 26 in 11 games (26th in the nation). Two games into the 2011 season, <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>has no sacks defensively and the offensive line has allowed three.TRIPLE FIGURES: No <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> football opponent in 2010 produced a running back whorushed for 100 or more yards against the Mustangs, but the streak of 11 such games wassnapped in the 2011 opener as San Diego <strong>State</strong>’s Ronnie Hillman rushed for 189 yards on28 carries and scored twice. In 2007, six of <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>’s 11 foes produced a 100-yard rusher,including a pair of 200-yard games -- Deonte’ Jackson (214) of Weber <strong>State</strong> and Cory Koenig(259) of <strong>South</strong> <strong>Dakota</strong> <strong>State</strong>. In 2002, each of <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>'s first eight opponents produced a100-yard rusher. Nine of the 11 opponents in 2002 had a 100-yard rusher. The Mustangs surrenderedover 100 yards to an opposing running back just three times in 2003, only once in2004 (Sacramento <strong>State</strong>'s Kris Daniels netted 115 yards in the season finale) and four in2005. Montana’s Andrew Schmidt (145 yards), Wisconsin’s John Clay (107 yards) and Weber<strong>State</strong>’s Trevyn Smith (137 yards) were the only three to accomplish the feat in 2008. Last time the Mustangs wereshut out was in 1998 by Nevada, 63-0, in Reno. The Mustangs also were shut out by Northern Arizona in1998, 9-0. <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>'s two shutouts to start the 2006 season were its first since a 31-0 shutout overNorthern Colorado on Nov. 13, 2004. Wide receiver Ramses Barden wasdrafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 2009 NFL Draftand was activated for three of the team’s 16 games in 2009, catchingone pass from Eli Manning for 16 yards. He caught five passes for 64yards last fall, missing 10 games due to an ankle injury. Defensive endMustang NotesChris Gocong was drafted in the third round by the PhiladelphiaEagles five years ago. He spent the 2006 season on the injuredreserve list due to a neck injury, then played all 16 games in 2007 onthe strong side of the linebacking corps and recorded 92 tackles,including one sack. He added 61 tackles in 16 games in 2008 and 44tackles (one sack) in 15 contests, including 11 starts, in 2009. Gocongwas traded to the Cleveland Browns in April 2010 and notched 75 tackles(two sacks) last fall. Cornerback Courtney Brown was drafted inthe seventh round in April 2007 by the Dallas Cowboys and notched 13tackles in two seasons before being released prior to the 2009 season.He signed a futures contract with the Giants in January 2010 but didnot play in any games last fall. He was a free agent this summer.Former <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> linebacker Mark Restelli was the leading tackler forthe Edmonton Eskimos in 2009, recording 58 defensive tackles and 16special teams tackles. He played the first two games of the 2010 seasonbefore being sidelined with a knee injury, returning in mid-October.In six games he notched 16 tackles. Restelli signed a futures contractwith the Miami Dolphins in January 2011 but was cut Sept. 3 while widereceiver Dominique Johnson inked a free agent deal with theMinnesota Vikings just days after the 2011 NFL Lockout ended.Johnson was waived in late August. Restelli has returned to theEskimos for the rest of the 2011 season. Another ex-Mustang linebacker,Marty Mohamed, signed a contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in June 2011 and made a tackle in a preseason loss to Toronto,but was cut two days later. David Richardson played for theJacksonville team in the Arena <strong>Football</strong> League in 2011 and helped theSharks to their first AFL title. He made three tackles in Jacksonville’swin over Iowa on May 13 but was placed on injured reserve June 9. Heplayed 13 games in three NFL seasons (2003, 2004, 2006) with theJacksonville Jaguars at cornerback, safety and on special teams,notching seven tackles and one pass breakup in his NFL career.RECENT SUCCESS ON THE FIELD: <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> has produced sevenwinning seasons in the last eight years and has been ranked in the top25 each of the last seven campaigns. The Mustangs, who have won59 of their last 91 games going back to the 2002 season finale, havebeen ranked as high as No. 3, which occurred in the 2005 season andthat team settled for a No. 6 final ranking. Game 1San Diego <strong>State</strong> 49, <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> 21September 3, 2011Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, CA Attn: 34,384SAN DIEGO, <strong>Cal</strong>if. – Senior quarterback Ryan Lindley threw fourtouchdown passes and sophomore running back Ronnie Hillmanrushed for 189 yards and two more scores as San Diego <strong>State</strong> beat<strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> 49-21 in the season opener at Qualcomm Stadium.Lindley completed 15 of 27 passes for 203 yards, including twoscoring tosses to Dylan Denso and one each to Gavin Escobar andColin Lockett, as the Aztecs snapped a two-game losing streakagainst the Mustangs, avenging 16-14 and 29-27 setbacks in 2006and 2008, respectively.San Diego <strong>State</strong> scored the first two touchdowns of the game andnever looked back. <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> closed the gap to 14-7 and 21-14 beforethe Aztecs scored three unanswered touchdowns to pull away.Lockett capped the scoring with a 94-yard kickoff return with 6:30to play in the game, the first kickoff return for a touchdown given upby <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> since 2007.Trailing 14-0 after one quarter, <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> put together an 80-yardnine-play drive, getting on the scoreboard on the first play of the secondquarter on a three-yard run around left end by Mark Rodgers.After San Diego <strong>State</strong> rebuilt its 14-point cushion, <strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong> answeredwith a 17-yard run by senior fullback Jake Romanelli with 6:20to go in the second quarter. Key play in that 74-yard drive was a 52-yard halfback pass from Rodgers to freshman wide receiver LanceCastaneda. The Mustangs trailed 21-14, but could get no closer.<strong>Cal</strong> <strong>Poly</strong>’s final score was a two-yard run by quarterback AndreBroadous with 6:43 to play in the game. Broadous hit wide receiverBrandon Michalkiewicz with a 49-yard pass to set up the score.San Diego <strong>State</strong> produced a 492-284 advantage in total offenseand 22-12 in first downs.
