“Green” Standards for Olympic Construction ProjectsThe system of “green” standards involves the use of environmentally friendlyconstruction materials, renewable energy, waste minimization and recycling, reductionof greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a rational use of water and energy.According to the <strong>Sochi</strong> <strong>2014</strong> Organizing Committee, about 200 Olympicsites “are being designed and constructed by State Corporation Olympstroy withconsideration of “green” standards.” 1It was declared that green standards are compulsory for all investors and contractorsof Olympic constructions“Our Olympics are the same as all Olympics, the same composition of facilities,the cost of constructed facilities is not higher than those created in other countries;although they are the most advanced, they are built taking into accountstate of the art achievements and construction equipment; and, for the first timein our country, are built in accordance with green standards,” said Deputy PrimeMinister Dmitry Kozak in the interview with the “Russia -24” television station. 2Even though the term “green” standards sounds blasphemous in relation to constructionin <strong>Sochi</strong>, which resulted in the destruction of natural complexeson the area of more than a thousand hectares in the <strong>Sochi</strong> National Park,let’s look deeply into the issue.
