Graphical TFT displays for electronic shelf labeling - Wincor Nixdorf

Electronic shelf edge labels (ESEL) are
growing fast in popularity and are playing
a more and more important role in stores
as flexible price changes are becoming a
„must“. Until now, retailers could choose
between two ESEL technologies:
■ segment-based displays which are
only able to display the price in
electronic form. All other product
information still needs to be printed
onto adhesive labels which are
manually applied to the ESELs
■ graphical dot-matrix displays which
could so-far only be realized using bistable
technology („e-paper“). These
displays use power only when they
are updating the screens. This
technology has several disadvantages:
power consumption is not linear, but
depends directly on the number of
screen changes performed, so the
battery life is uneven in a store.
Flashing of the screen in order to
attract shoppers to promotions is not
possible. And the use of e-paper in
freezers is not feasible due to high
additional power consumption
(internal heating of display)
Thanks to a revolutionary patented
power saving technology we are offering
for the first time a graphical ESEL based
on standard TFT technology. The
advantage:
■ Very high resolution (125dpi) for crisp
text and barcodes that are easily
scannable while taking up little space.
■ Certified to operate between -20°C
and +50°C, therefore usable in
chillers, freezers and even in outdoor
environments.
■ Blinking / Flashing of any area of the
screen. Prices, logos or texts can be

Accurate – flexible – informative - reliable
animated precisely to the pixel –
perfect for drawing attention to a
product without distracting the
shoppers.
■ Fields on the screen can toggle
between different data, allowing to
present more information to the
consumers than would normally fit
onto the display.
■ ESEL can be switched to a
management page with additional
information for employees. An
important time-saver when working on
the shelves, for example for restocking.
■ Templates offer different screen
layouts in the same store – for
example per department or per
promotion type.
■ New and more efficient transmission
protocol now allows up to 40.000 price
changes per hour.
■ Fully compatible with our segmentbased
ESELs. Combine both systems in
the same store to optimize the ROI.
■ Included are of course all the
advantages of our tried-and-tested
ESEL solution, which is based on an
extremely reliable low-frequency radio
transmission system. This needs only a
single transmitter to cover 3.000m² of
sales floor, independent of its shape.

The solution for cost-effective shelf edge labeling
Two ESEL sizes are currently available:
The „G4 Medium“ with a width of 69mm
for use in rails – of course with the
patented „Easy-Lock“ anti-theft protection
and fully compatible with all rails and
individual fixtures of our traditional ESEL
solution.
G4 Medium
The „G4 XXL“ for fruits & vegetables, for
beverages etc. With its large screen
measuring 15,2cm x 9,4cm it is visible
from a distance and offers enough room
for detailed product descriptions. The
dovetail fixtures on the back side are
compatible with several industry-standard
fixture systems.
Long and linear battery life
Our graphical ESELs have a battery life of
well over five years. Unlike bi-stable
displays this is for the most part
independent of the number of price
changes, so that a battery change can be
scheduled for a defined point in time. The
batteries are user-replaceable, there is no
need to send them in.
Patented anti-theft and anti-shift
mechanism „Easy Lock“
A special locking mechanism ensures that
the ESELs remain in their correct place on
the rail and cannot be moved or stolen by
shoppers.
Employees on the other hand can remove
the ESELs within fractions of a second
with the help of a patented bi-polar
magnet – without applying any force.
Sinple linking of products – now even
more universal than before. It is still
possible to use our special ESEL-handheld
in order to quickly link ESEL and product
directly at the shelf. Now it is also
possible to use an existing portable
scanner, MDE or PDA for this task,
lowering the investment and simplifying
operations.
