This year, more <strong>Baycrest</strong> staff chose to get <strong>the</strong>annual flu shot dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 2012 staff <strong>in</strong>fluenzaimmunization campaign than <strong>in</strong> 2011.The Apotex staff achieved an overall vacc<strong>in</strong>ation rateof 72 per cent, beat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 70 per cent target. In <strong>the</strong>hospital, <strong>the</strong> overall immunization rate was 60 per cent,an <strong>in</strong>crease of 10 per cent over 2011.January 16, 2013 —VOL. 9 NO. 2Staff immunization on <strong>the</strong> rise as flu cases surgeacross Ontarioimportance of gett<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> flu shot and helped OHS toarrange Flu Buggy visits to units and departments across<strong>the</strong> campus.“The champions did a great job <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>campaign with <strong>the</strong>ir energy and efforts, and we sawsome of <strong>the</strong> biggest improvements <strong>in</strong> staff immunizationrates <strong>in</strong> units where we had <strong>the</strong> help of champions,”says Boroja. “On behalf of <strong>the</strong> flu team I want to thankour champions for <strong>the</strong>ir hard work.”“Our 2012 flu immunization campaign was markedby unprecedented cooperation and activity across<strong>the</strong> organization,” says Nadia Boroja, manager,Occupational Health and Safety (OHS).One important element <strong>in</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g to drive up <strong>the</strong>vacc<strong>in</strong>ation rate was campaign champions. <strong>Baycrest</strong> MattersA bi-weekly update for <strong>Baycrest</strong> staff, families, clients and volunteersStaff <strong>in</strong> all areas of <strong>Baycrest</strong> as well as clientsand families had <strong>the</strong> opportunity to providefeedback and ask questions about <strong>the</strong> new fiveyearstrategic plan at more than 45 small groupmeet<strong>in</strong>gs across <strong>the</strong> campus that took place <strong>in</strong>November and December.Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Dr. Bill Reichman, presidentand CEO, “These conversations with staffand o<strong>the</strong>r stakeholders are crucial to foster<strong>in</strong>gan understand<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> work we will do toimplement this plan and <strong>the</strong> changes that it willbr<strong>in</strong>g.”The strategic plann<strong>in</strong>g engagement team ledby Joni Kent, vice president, Strategy and chiefhuman resources officer, spent a little over amonth go<strong>in</strong>g to staff meet<strong>in</strong>gs, Council meet<strong>in</strong>gs,committees and o<strong>the</strong>r groups, ultimately reach<strong>in</strong>gmore than 600 employees across <strong>the</strong> organizationto provide an overview of <strong>the</strong> plan, get feedbackand answer questions.Themes that stood out for Kent related to <strong>the</strong>many ways staff go <strong>the</strong> extra mile to providevery special <strong>in</strong>dividualized client-centred careevery day. “It’s clear that as we evolve as anorganization, <strong>the</strong>se efforts that enhance <strong>the</strong>quality of care we provide are top of m<strong>in</strong>d wi<strong>the</strong>veryone and we must do everyth<strong>in</strong>g possible tocont<strong>in</strong>ue to stay focused on <strong>the</strong>m,” she says.Kent says ano<strong>the</strong>r po<strong>in</strong>t that came out of <strong>the</strong>engagement sessions was our commitment torecogniz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Baycrest</strong>’s history and its roots. “Theimportance of remember<strong>in</strong>g where we camefrom, our history as <strong>the</strong> first Jewish Home forJanuary 16, 2013 —VOL. 9 NO. 2Strategic plan 2013-2018More than 600 staff, clients and families participate<strong>in</strong> conversations about our new strategic plan<strong>the</strong> Aged, and our Judaic heritage and cultureis someth<strong>in</strong>g that came through clearly <strong>in</strong> ourconversations.”“The feedback has been essential for us as wehave cont<strong>in</strong>ued to ref<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> document to ensurethat <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al product reflects what’s specialabout <strong>Baycrest</strong>, <strong>the</strong> experiences of our staff,families and clients, and not only where we’rego<strong>in</strong>g but also where we came from: <strong>the</strong> rootsthat make us strong as an organization,” saysKent. “We want to try to weave <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se elementsso that <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al document speaks to all <strong>the</strong>segroups.”The f<strong>in</strong>al plan is set to be submitted to <strong>the</strong> Boardof Directors for approval at <strong>the</strong> end of January.After that, <strong>the</strong>re will be much more dialogueand <strong>in</strong>formation about what <strong>the</strong> plan means to<strong>Baycrest</strong>.Kent says <strong>the</strong>se first meet<strong>in</strong>gs with staff this fallwere just <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of a conversation thatshe wants to cont<strong>in</strong>ue on a regular basis over<strong>the</strong> next five years. Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Kent, cont<strong>in</strong>uedengagement from staff will be vital to <strong>the</strong> plan’ssuccess. “We want to have more conversationswith staff about what <strong>the</strong> plan <strong>in</strong>cludes andhow we are go<strong>in</strong>g to pull it <strong>in</strong>to our operat<strong>in</strong>gplan,” she says. “In order to advance this planour staff need to understand it, be able tohave conversations about it and be able to see<strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong>ir role <strong>in</strong> our plan.”Once approved, <strong>the</strong> 2013-2018 strategicplan will be rolled out and used to create ouroperat<strong>in</strong>g plan.42


<strong>Baycrest</strong> MattersA bi-weekly update for <strong>Baycrest</strong> staff, families, clients and volunteersJanuary 16, 2013 —VOL. 9 NO. 2Speech-language pathologystudents visit <strong>Baycrest</strong> fora learn<strong>in</strong>g experience<strong>Baycrest</strong>’s speech-language pathologists shared<strong>the</strong>ir expertise with a group of students from <strong>the</strong>University of Toronto <strong>in</strong> an Integrated Learn<strong>in</strong>gExperience (ILE) at <strong>Baycrest</strong> on November 28.“<strong>Baycrest</strong> was <strong>in</strong>vited to host this session becauseof our expertise <strong>in</strong> ag<strong>in</strong>g, geriatrics and care of <strong>the</strong>elderly,” says Lisa Sokoloff, professional practice chief,Speech-Language Pathology and specialist, InternationalRelations and Interprofessional Education.The session focused on treatment, plann<strong>in</strong>g andoutcome measures for a complex geriatric case. <strong>Baycrest</strong>speech-language pathologists developed a case study toeducate students on best <strong>practices</strong> <strong>in</strong> communicationand swallow<strong>in</strong>g disorders <strong>in</strong> geriatric care.ILE sessions are developed to give students <strong>the</strong>opportunity to <strong>in</strong>tegrate what <strong>the</strong>y learn <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>classroom with real-life situations. Students re<strong>in</strong>forceand demonstrate <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge through this casebasedlearn<strong>in</strong>g.Forty-six students <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> speech-language pathologymaster’s program attended <strong>the</strong> session. In addition to<strong>the</strong> case study, <strong>the</strong> day-long ILE featured a discussionon professional practice with Fay Lim-Lambie, director,Health Discipl<strong>in</strong>es and a talk on <strong>the</strong> complexity ofgeriatric care by Dr. Gary Naglie, chief of medic<strong>in</strong>e.Sokoloff says that feedback on <strong>the</strong> session wasextremely positive. Participants <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>the</strong>y were verypleased with <strong>the</strong> learn<strong>in</strong>g experience and recommendedthat <strong>Baycrest</strong> host ano<strong>the</strong>r session next year. “Mostimportantly, 98 per cent of <strong>the</strong> students <strong>in</strong>dicated that<strong>the</strong>y learned someth<strong>in</strong>g new about geriatrics and thatwas one of our key goals for this session,” she says.Know your safety signs forfalls preventionRecogniz<strong>in</strong>g safety signs can make all <strong>the</strong> difference <strong>in</strong>protect<strong>in</strong>g yourself and clients from slips and falls. When under too much stress, your body will developphysical, emotional or behavioural warn<strong>in</strong>g signs. Physicalsymptoms <strong>in</strong>clude headaches, high blood pressure, chest pa<strong>in</strong>,fatigue or eyestra<strong>in</strong>. Some emotional signs are irritability, lowself-esteem, anger and apathy. Behavioural <strong>in</strong>dicators maybe overeat<strong>in</strong>g or under eat<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>creased smok<strong>in</strong>g or dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g,forgetfulness or <strong>in</strong>somnia.Consider <strong>the</strong>se strategies to reduce <strong>the</strong> negative effects ofstress <strong>in</strong> your life:1. Brea<strong>the</strong> deeply. Most people tend to take short, shallowbreaths when stressed, prevent<strong>in</strong>g proper oxidation of yourtissues which only exacerbates stress. Check your breath<strong>in</strong>gthroughout <strong>the</strong> day, especially dur<strong>in</strong>g high pressure situationsto ensure you are breath<strong>in</strong>g as slowly and deeply as possible.2. Go for a walk, takea long bath, listen to music, call a good friend, get a massage,spend time <strong>in</strong> nature or do anyth<strong>in</strong>g that revitalizes you.4. Sleep restfully. A proper night’s sleep allows your bodyto deal with daily stressors more effectively. Keep a regularsleep schedule whenever possible, avoid<strong>in</strong>g caffe<strong>in</strong>e andalcohol close to bedtime, relax before sleep and keep yourbedroom at a cool, comfortable temperature.5. Better manage your time. Use a calendar or timemanagementsystem to record all of your appo<strong>in</strong>tments andtasks, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g self-care activities. At <strong>the</strong> end each day-long session,participants become <strong>Best</strong> Practice Champions, jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g anetwork of o<strong>the</strong>r champions and ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g opportunitiesto connect with RNAO facilitators and mentors.Cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>skills</strong> dayThe advanced practice nurs<strong>in</strong>g team organizes one<strong>days</strong>essions each year to give nurses <strong>the</strong> opportunityto refresh <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>skills</strong> and ensure <strong>the</strong>y are up-to-dateon <strong>the</strong> latest best <strong>practices</strong> and resources. Two of <strong>the</strong>sessions were held <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fall with two more to followthis w<strong>in</strong>ter.This year, participants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sessions are learn<strong>in</strong>gabout <strong>the</strong> BPSO <strong>in</strong>itiative’s five cl<strong>in</strong>ical areas of focusby work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> small groups on case-based scenarios.This format gives nurses <strong>the</strong> a chance to discussguidel<strong>in</strong>es and share <strong>the</strong>ir knowledge.“Align<strong>in</strong>g our cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>skills</strong> day with <strong>the</strong> BPSO<strong>in</strong>itiative, we’re giv<strong>in</strong>g nurses at <strong>Baycrest</strong> <strong>the</strong> chance tolearn more about <strong>the</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es we’ll be implement<strong>in</strong>gso that <strong>the</strong>y’re engaged and <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> process,”says Aysha Bandali, advanced practice nurse and oneof <strong>the</strong> organizers of <strong>the</strong> sessions.The next cl<strong>in</strong>ical <strong>skills</strong> <strong>days</strong> will be held on Wednesday,January 30 and Wednesday, February 27.
