Students wererequired to learn a complex neuroscience booklet thatwould challenge undergraduate science students! Of <strong>the</strong>1300 students who took part in round one of <strong>the</strong> ABBCacross NSW <strong>the</strong> top 6% were invited to attend round 2 in<strong>the</strong> National BrainInura was one of <strong>the</strong> 80 students <strong>from</strong> 34 schools across <strong>the</strong>State to compete to be State champion, who wouldultimately represent NSW in <strong>the</strong> National Brain BeeChallenge. Inura competed gallantly at <strong>the</strong> University ofWestern <strong>Sydney</strong> earlier this term and did <strong>the</strong> school proud.Well done Inura!Extension and Enrichment Activities forstudents outside of school hoursYears 9 and 10 science students can participate in ‘<strong>The</strong>Science Experience’ which is run by <strong>the</strong> Science SchoolsFoundation Inc. <strong>The</strong> 2-3 day program costs $110 perstudents and students can enrol online at:www.scienceexperience.com.au . MacquarieUniversity and <strong>Sydney</strong> University are running programsin <strong>the</strong> Summer Holidays (entries close 28 October) andUTS <strong>Sydney</strong> is running a program on 4-6 December.We encourage all interested science students to apply.<strong>The</strong> Scientia Challenge Program run through GERRIC at<strong>the</strong> University of New South Wales, which is designedfor gifted and talented high school students in Years 7-10. <strong>The</strong> program features a range of workshops <strong>from</strong> anumber of academic disciplines taught over three days.<strong>The</strong> courses are developed and presented byacademics of <strong>the</strong> University of New South Wales, whoare considered <strong>the</strong> leaders in <strong>the</strong>ir fields. <strong>The</strong> coursesare not vocational in nature; ra<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong>y are designedto stimulate <strong>the</strong> interests of gifted students. <strong>The</strong> levelof difficulty in <strong>the</strong> courses is aimed at Years 11 and 12,thus providing a rigorous and challenging program forgifted students. <strong>The</strong> program also provides <strong>the</strong>opportunity for gifted students to socialize with likemindedchildren of similar interests. For moreinformation and how to apply seehttp://gerric.arts.unsw.edu.au/for-giftedstudents/scientia-challenge-7-10/<strong>The</strong> Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Programrun through <strong>the</strong> University of <strong>Sydney</strong>. <strong>The</strong> aim of <strong>the</strong>program is to provide talented high school sciencestudents (in Years 9 and 10) with additional challengesand stimulation in <strong>the</strong> areas of biology, chemistry andphysics.<strong>The</strong> workshop also gives students an on-campusexperience. It provides <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> opportunity toengage with University teaching staff and currentresearchers, access first-class facilities and makefriends with people who have a mutual interest inscience. <strong>The</strong> program runs twice a year for three daysin <strong>the</strong> July and October school holiday period.
