Talented Athlete Program –News and Updates<strong>The</strong> Talented Athlete Program has continuedto grow over 2012. We welcome our newathletes to <strong>the</strong> program; Audrey Bennett,Hyeon Kim, Rebecca Keywood, PatrickMajid, Sarina Chew, Connor Curtis and ElsaFredrikson. Due to <strong>the</strong> new enrolments into<strong>the</strong> program we have reached capacity for2012; unfortunately we cannotaccommodate any new applicants this year,although enrolments for 2013 will openshortly.<strong>The</strong> TAP program received a generousdonation <strong>from</strong> a local <strong>Balmain</strong> resident thisterm. With SSC <strong>Balmain</strong> Campus being <strong>the</strong>donator’s local government school andhaving heard of our program in <strong>the</strong>community, <strong>Balmain</strong> was <strong>the</strong> obviouschoice. We received a cross trainer and atreadmill; which are both in working orderand readily used by <strong>the</strong> students trainingwith Ms Young in <strong>the</strong> gym.<strong>The</strong> TAP Program has also initiated a newincentive to motivate our students to workto <strong>the</strong>ir full potential. This is called ‘Athleteof <strong>the</strong> Month’ and has been designed totarget any TAP student that hasdemonstrated an outstanding work ethic in<strong>the</strong> program. This entails working to <strong>the</strong>irintensity/peak level consistently, highattendance week in and week out,demonstrates leadership within <strong>the</strong>program, successful academic achievementand overall is seen to be working towardsachieving <strong>the</strong>ir individual goal. TAP trainers,along with students will nominate an athletethat <strong>the</strong>y believe to be deserving of <strong>the</strong>award each month.Ms TricaseTalented Athlete Program - JuniorCoordinatorDuke of Edinburgh<strong>The</strong> Duke of Edinburgh adventurous journeys have now beenbooked and finalized for both <strong>the</strong> Bronze and Silver awardstudents at <strong>Balmain</strong> Campus for 2012.<strong>The</strong> Adventurous Journey (AJ) section of <strong>the</strong> Duke of Edinburgh isorganized by Ms Tricase. This is <strong>the</strong> section of <strong>the</strong> award whichfacilitates team work, develops a student’s sense of adventure,bond with fellow award participants and demonstratesperseverance and leadership skills.Each journey needs to have a clear purpose and be carried out in asafe, yet challenging environment. Students at <strong>Balmain</strong> Campuswill be involved in expedition journeys – where students focus ontravelling and learning new skills along <strong>the</strong> way.<strong>The</strong> Bronze Practice Journey will be <strong>from</strong> Friday <strong>the</strong> 12 th Octoberto Saturday <strong>the</strong> 13 th October. Students will canoe a segment of <strong>the</strong>Kangaroo River, in <strong>the</strong> vicinity of Tallowa Dam and hike in <strong>the</strong>same area. <strong>The</strong> Kangaroo River is located in <strong>the</strong> Kangaroo Valley,being south of <strong>Sydney</strong> between Mittagong and Nowra. Studentswill be accompanied on this trip by Ms Tricase. <strong>The</strong> QualifyingJourney will be booked for 2013.<strong>The</strong> Silver Practice Journey is a three day expedition and isscheduled for Wednesday <strong>the</strong> 19 th September through to Friday<strong>the</strong> 21 st September. This expedition will be taking place in <strong>the</strong>Kangaroo Valley area; on Lake Yurrunga. Students will be involvedin a combination of canoeing and bushwalking. <strong>The</strong> QualifyingJourney is booked for Wednesday <strong>the</strong> 5 th December through toFriday <strong>the</strong> 7 th December.What’s coming up15 th September- Music in <strong>the</strong> Park @ Pioneer ParkLeichhardt17 th September- Transition Cup .
