Expos<strong>in</strong>g the student to various theories, techniques, and applications <strong>of</strong> counsell<strong>in</strong>gpsychology, with emphasis on their relevance to the Asia Pacific context <strong>in</strong> generaland the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> particular.b. A Master <strong>of</strong> Science or a Master <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>in</strong> Guidance and Counsel<strong>in</strong>g or itsequivalent. By equivalent is meant a master’s degree <strong>in</strong> psychology or <strong>in</strong> education,major <strong>in</strong> guidance and counsel<strong>in</strong>g with courses <strong>in</strong> Counsel<strong>in</strong>g Techniques I and II,Group Process, Test<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Counsel<strong>in</strong>g, and Organization <strong>of</strong> Guidance Services. Amaster’s degree <strong>in</strong> another field may be considered if the applicant has 15 units <strong>of</strong>guidance and counsel<strong>in</strong>g courses cited above.2. An overall grade <strong>of</strong> 90, 3.0 or B+ <strong>in</strong> the master’s program.3. Psychological tests and personal <strong>in</strong>terview by the department chairperson andmembers <strong>of</strong> the Admissions Committee.4. Evidence <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional promise (persona, <strong>in</strong>terpersonal and the ability tocommunicate <strong>in</strong> English and/or Filip<strong>in</strong>o effectively. Such evidence may be gatheredfrom the student’s application for admission, from the results <strong>of</strong> the admission testsand/or from the <strong>in</strong>terview with the chairperson and members <strong>of</strong> the AdmissionsCommittee.Retention <strong>in</strong> the Program1. There is an implicit responsibility to uphold the published ethical standards <strong>of</strong> thePsychological Association <strong>of</strong> the Philipp<strong>in</strong>es, Philipp<strong>in</strong>e Guidance and Counsel<strong>in</strong>gAssociation Inc., and the American Counsel<strong>in</strong>g Association once accepted oradmitted to the program. Violation <strong>of</strong> ethical standards may result <strong>in</strong> the term<strong>in</strong>ationform the program.2. Students will be exposed to various group activities/exercises tolearn how to become effective members and facilitators <strong>of</strong> groups <strong>in</strong> different sett<strong>in</strong>gs.CPS 525M: Research Methods <strong>in</strong> Counsel<strong>in</strong>g (3 units)The course aims to give the student practical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the process <strong>of</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>icalassessment <strong>in</strong> the mental health pr<strong>of</strong>ession. It <strong>in</strong>cludes as <strong>in</strong>troduction to the scienceand art <strong>of</strong> assessment as a foundation for the actual practice <strong>of</strong> assessment <strong>in</strong> a mentalhealth sett<strong>in</strong>g. This course aims to provide the student with a glimpse <strong>of</strong> that world.Likewise, it discusses common childhood problems that may be brought to the attention<strong>of</strong> the counselor. It focuses on theselection and evaluation <strong>of</strong> employees, the management <strong>of</strong> people, human relations <strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>dustry, and job analysis.CPS 915P Advanced Sem<strong>in</strong>ar <strong>in</strong> Learn<strong>in</strong>g and Motivation (3 units)Practicum and InternshipCPS 930P Practicum <strong>in</strong> Counsel<strong>in</strong>g and Psychotherapy (3 units)This course is a period when the doctoral student <strong>of</strong> counsel<strong>in</strong>g psychologydemonstrates skills and application <strong>of</strong> his/her declared theoretical approach topsychotherapy and subjects its conduct under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a designatedpr<strong>of</strong>essor. Formally it <strong>in</strong>cludes a required number <strong>of</strong> hours spent <strong>in</strong> counsel<strong>in</strong>gsessions. Student records these sessions <strong>in</strong> a journal. She/he also reports thenumber <strong>of</strong> hours spent with the supervisor <strong>in</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ic<strong>in</strong>g the journal reports, tapedsessions, giv<strong>in</strong>g and receiv<strong>in</strong>g feedback, counsel<strong>in</strong>g with clients from an agreedcommunity, group counsel<strong>in</strong>g, reflection shar<strong>in</strong>g with other practicum students anddeal<strong>in</strong>g with the adm<strong>in</strong>istrative elements <strong>of</strong> pre and post counsel<strong>in</strong>g andpsychotherapy sessions. The goal <strong>of</strong> the course is to produce <strong>in</strong> the counsel<strong>in</strong>gpsychologist the discipl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education and learn<strong>in</strong>g, personal discoveryand quality help<strong>in</strong>g for the practice <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession. Its contribution is the <strong>La</strong> Sallianvision <strong>of</strong> creat<strong>in</strong>g “Christian Achievers”, produc<strong>in</strong>g counsel<strong>in</strong>g psychologists who willeffectively help to change their lives.CPS 931P Practicum <strong>in</strong> Assessment (3 units)The goal <strong>of</strong> this course is to provide supervised experience to students onassessment skills, adm<strong>in</strong>istration, scor<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>in</strong>terpretation <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual <strong>in</strong>telligencetests, projective techniques and objective personality tests. The course also exposedthe students to opportunities to assess with objective personality tests and projectivetechniques on normal and abnormal children and adults. Furthermore, the course isdesigned to ref<strong>in</strong>e and expand previously learned <strong>in</strong>terpretative skills <strong>in</strong> theapplication <strong>of</strong> objective personality tests and projective techniques. Students areexpected to complete 200 hours <strong>in</strong> an approved mental health agency to <strong>in</strong>clude classcase conferences over the course <strong>of</strong> one trimester. Students are expected to presenttheir cases <strong>in</strong> class. CPS 945D Internship I (3 units)The goals <strong>of</strong> Internship I and Internship II is to prepare students who are <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>alstages <strong>of</strong> their graduate tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and to be able to function broadly competently andresponsibly as pr<strong>of</strong>essional counselor. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the program is to provide<strong>in</strong>terns with the opportunity to develop and ref<strong>in</strong>e general skills fundamental topractice <strong>of</strong> counsel<strong>in</strong>g psychology and applicable to a wide variety <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionalsett<strong>in</strong>gs.The <strong>in</strong>ternship tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g program particular emphasis is on consolidation <strong>of</strong> a theoreticalbody <strong>of</strong> knowledge; skills <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual and group psychotherapy; <strong>in</strong>tervention;consultation and preventive and developmental outreach programs; and thedevelopment <strong>of</strong> cl<strong>in</strong>ical supervisor skills.Internship I requires 350 hours experience <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and research. This is the segment<strong>in</strong> their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g where students can experience how it is to work full time as acounsel<strong>in</strong>g psychologist.
